Sony Wants A Faster Shift From PS4 To PS5 Than In Previous Generations

Sony is aiming for "a scale and a pace that we've never delivered on before" for players adopting the PS5.

The PlayStation 4 has been a huge seller for Sony, recently becoming the second-best selling console ever--only behind the PlayStation 2, which is unlikely to be overtaken. With the PS4 growing older, Sony is looking to segue that into success for its next generation and continue these high sales figures. New PlayStation boss Jim Ryan says the company's main goal is to move the community from the current generation to the PlayStation 5 more quickly than it has in the past.

Referencing the success of the PS4, Ryan told GI.biz about leveraging the strong brand to the next gen.

Now Playing: Sony Wants You To Buy A PS5 Faster Than Usual - GS New Update

"These are gamers who are networked and sticky and engaged and passionate about PlayStation to an extent that we've not seen in previous generations," he said. "As we move towards the next-generation in 2020, one of our tasks--probably our main task--is to take that community and transition it from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5, and at a scale and pace that we've never delivered on before."

It's unclear how Sony plans to move players along to the new console or if this will impact its stated plans of releasing games cross-platform. Ryan went on to point out that developers and publishers have given good feedback on the PS5's development tools, something that was a particular issue with the PS3.

"One thing that makes me particularly optimistic that what we're hearing from developers and publishers, is the ease in which they are able to get code running on PlayStation 5 is way beyond any experience they've had on any other PlayStation platform."

This comes as Sony reshuffles its management to prepare for the next generation, which includes a more globalized strategy. For more on Sony's next console, check out everything we know about the PlayStation 5.

Well duh.

They'll get me on board sooner if the price is right, and the launch lineup is decent. PS+ offerings needs to be improved. Give me a controller with longer battery life. Doesn't need to be as long as dual shock 3's but at least twice as long as DS4.

If they do all the right things, I'll be in on day 1.

I don't care about BC but since it's just a more powerful PS4, PS4 BC will be thrown in basically for free and there's no reason not to.

I'll be plenty happy to upgrade to a PS5 when it comes out, provided it has one thing: backwards compatibility.

@Barighm: I realize that's what they initially said, but there has been a little bit of backtracking on this subject lately and of course nothing is ever set in stone until it actually happens.

@deadline: It uses the same architecture as PS4, so it will be a given that it will play PS4 games. This is the first time it has happened in a Sony console. Or even MS console.

Just like when you buy a PC in 2019, it will play everything your 2016 PC could play, because it's the same system with higher specs. It's not even worth calling it BC at this point. It's just something that comes for free because the new system is the same as the old. The same applies to your iPhone 11, which can run all apps that an iPhone 6, 7, or 8 could run.

In the past, new consoles came with new architecture which means the software of previous gen was not compatible. To get it playable, you'd either have to port it over, create a software emulator, or include the old hardware chips in the new console. Now, the new consoles are just going to be like PCs. Same x86 architecture, it will play previous gen games.

@lostn: Yes this is a good summary of the situation, and as a professional software developer I understand all of this. However, compatibility is not just affected by the hardware architecture, but also the operating system (after all, Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems all run on x86).

Recently there was a quote from a Sony PR person saying that the "dev team is putting all power on verifying whether they can secure a complete compatibility. Please wait for more information." As this quote illustrates, although BC will be much more straightforward for this generation shift, it is not "free". It requires careful attention to the API's involved to avoid breaking compatibility, and to ensure that API behavior remains consistent. There is always the chance that Sony could decide that it is not worth the bother. I don't think this is likely, but I just want to make sure they understand that this is an important feature.

My ultimate wish would be for a "deluxe" Playstation console that would include the hardware necessary for full compatibility of PS3 as well as PS4 games, similar to how the PS3 basically contained a PS2 inside it. I'd gladly pay a premium for such a device. I guess I can dream :)

@deadline: the console you want would cost money to engineer and design, and that cost will be passed on. They probably need to redesign the older chips because they are not running efficient transistor sizes and would just be old chips bolted on. They probably don't have the facilities to manufacture those chips anymore.

Basically, it's going to be expensive, and have limited demand. I don't think they will bother, as much as it would be nice to have. A more expensive model will also carry with it the perception that the console as a whole is more expensive. For example, everyone calls the PS3 launch a disaster because it launched for $600, but they conveniently or deliberately forget that there was a $500 model which was more feature packed than the Xbox 360's premium $400 console. They could have called it a $500 console but everyone chose to call it a $600 console even though the $500 console was not missing any features unlike the cheaper 360 model.

If they release a $500 PS5 and a $600 model with full BC, everyone will call the PS5 a $600 console and it will be another PR disaster.

I do not own a ps4 and I must say I'll be very happy to own a Pro when it drops to 300 dollars. Good library and lower price on games.

Also, buying a console in the first year is never the best choice. First model number always have problems not seen until mass production. Even if I had the money to buy it I would wait for a revision model.

@sulfo: After 7th generation though consoles have much better QC. Xbox 360 was a shit show with red ring of death. Ps3 had its fair share of problems too.....not many issues this generation though....

They're taking a huge gamble if they think simple loyalty and bc will achieve those results. Personally, I've owned every PlayStation system (except PSP) and given Sony's new censorship policy and Western gaming focus these days, I'm considering going somewhere else next gen.

I used to pick PlayStation consoles because they had a nice split between niche Japanese content and third party Western titles, but now Nintendo seems to have taken over that market and Sony wants to focus more on Western games.

If I do ever decide to pick up a PS5, it'll be several years after launch, and only if Sony stops over-censoring content needlessly, with a PS5 pro model.

@briguyb13: They are running a platform akin to the internet. Why wouldn't they expect that different audiences prefer different things. Imagine if YouTube decided to censor every curse word in every video. YouTube would be an entirely different place. It's so ridiculous that they want to censor things.

if it's priced well and has good hardware.

Sony won this generation less because they did much right and more because Microsoft did so much wrong, at least at the beginning there. If the One had equivalent hardware to the PS4 and if MS hadn't tried their digital check-in and Kinect nonsense, Xbox would probably still be on top

All Sony has to do is capitalize on the goodwill they've built. They learned a lot going from the PS2 to the early days of the PS3, so I doubt they'll make the same kind of mistakes again

@realguitarhero5: True , it really didn't have as much to do with the games as people think. It was more that Sony built a more trusted name brand over the years . To think Microsoft can even sell 50 million consoles is a huge deal though as this bodes well for Scarlet.

I have absolutely no loyalty to Sony so I don't intend to buy a PS5 as soon as it comes out, especially when more powerful and efficient models are likely to come out. The last thing I need is another system that runs the newest games terribly because they were "enhanced" to work with newer model.

The only time I’ve ever jumped to a new console on day 1 of launch is when there was backwards compatibility. I can sell my previous console and buy the new version without sacrificing my game library I’ve built up. And then I can play those games plus a new game or two while the new console starts getting a solid library.

The console I waited the longest before getting? PS3. It was backwards compatible (which they mostly removed) but it was also $700 here in Canada at launch. So price is also critical. If the PS5 launches with full PS4 BC and at a $399 price point, I will buy day 1. If not, I can easily wait and I suspect others will also.

@Craig234: This is EXACTLY my thought.

I want a transition from my 2002 Camry to a 2013 Dodge Viper. I can't afford it, but I want to to do it. Can we make an article about this desire of mine, Gamespot? What do you mean this isn't gaming related? Half the articles on here aren't gaming related, either.

Fine, maybe I'll play my GBA in my unaffordable Viper. I haven't decided if I will do that either. Sounds like a surefire front page article to me. Make it happen.

If PS5 has full backwards compatibility for PS4, I'll get it at launch. I'd just unplug the PS4 and slide the PS5 right in and keep gaming.

Hell, I'd consider pre-ordering if it had full BC for PS3, PS2, PS1. So many games I never got around to finishing.

@Sound_Demon: Maybe they mean by the public. A lot of said it is underwhelming on console due to slow controller response times. especially aiming and shooting. Obviously this is not an issue on the PC version anyway.

Once they make a GTA , Assassins Creed or a sequel to bloodbourne type games built from the ground up for the ps5 people will be creaming for it.

@vortec40: The next Assassin's Creed game will be coming to current-gen and moved onto next-gen. Ubisoft wants to capitalise on the promise of quicker loading times as their games tend to be significant in scale. I don't see the next GTA being released immediately with the next-gen, but a Bloodbourne sequel is more than likely.

Ahh that's a odd statement, it's like saying Google wants to move twitch players to mixer.

I would be alarmed with that statement, should be backwards compatible and more commitments with shared ecosystems with other console makers.

So should PS2 players move to PS4 then? Or what.....

Each generation it's getting harder and harder to tell the difference. I mean with PS4 Pro you've already got 4K (which I can barely tell the difference from 1080p unless the screen is huge) and lots of games running at 60fps etc. I'm an X1X owner and I already know I'm holding off from Scarlett for at least a year or two, maybe more. I think if Sony wants a fast leap this time, they're gonna be in for a rude awakening.

@pcps4xb: You'll most likely only be able to see a difference if you have a good TV capable of running 8K. The promise of the PS5 running 8K stable, while the PS4 Pro still struggles to maintain a stable framerate with 4K is hard to believe.

@flicksgames: from what I can see your arguement is telling a difference between resolutions. The biggest benefit we'll get next gen is not resolution but graphical fidelity. Even if they choose to go with 1080P with certain game you will tell a huge difference in graphical fidelity. Up until now the base ps4 is the main platform to develop on and then we get the upgrades on the PS4 Pro. So now we'll be moving main development from base ps4 to ps5 and we'll see a huge difference.

Got my PS4 a year after it was released and even then I felt I was too early. I wont be looking at the PS5 until at least two years into its lifetime. Still have my PS3 setup as my entertainment device, so no need for a third gaming console anytime soon.
