Sony to double domestic PSP base over holidays

Electronics giant says it's on pace to move as many PSPs in the last two months of the year as it did in the first six months of the system's release.

After a slightly sluggish April debut and a postlaunch dearth of software, Sony's PSP is on pace to double its US hardware sales in the last two months of the year, Reuters reports.

Sony claimed 3 million units of the multimedia device had sold by November, and Sony Computer Entertainment America president Kaz Hirai told Reuters in October that he intended to double that figure by year's end. According to the news service, a Sony spokeswoman recently confirmed that the company was on pace to achieve that goal.

However, there is some debate about the accuracy of Sony's numbers. Industry sales tracking NPD Funworld has the PSP at 2.5 million units sold at the end of November. Despite recent releases of prominent PSP titles like Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories and Prince of Persia Revelations, NPD's figures seem to put the 6 million year-end tally well out of reach.

If Sony fails to make its goal, it shoudn't be terribly surprising to most industry watchers. Shortly after the system launched, UBS analyst Mike Wallace projected sales of "4 million or more" PSPs by the end of the calendar year, while American Technology Research's PJ McNealy expected 4.5 million to 5.5 million units sold in North America.

Does Sony really think that they can sell 300,000 pieces of junk in two months? And considering the junk costs $250 each. It took 'em 6 months just to sell the first 300,000. Even though it is Christmas time, I don't think they can can do it. The DS is better and CHEAPER then the PSP. Also it's Christmas time, not "the holiday season" to all you people who want to take the Christ out of Christmas and atheists.

At the moment the DS library seems to have convinced me of buying a DS which I will after Christmas. I am however going to buy a PSP as a gift, but never for me.

ummm once again if your gonna say something look at my profile first JR. August 28 1984, I am 21. I have come to a conclusion. EVERYBODY head over to the DS board, there is a forum that talks about the damage to there DS's. All these 9 year olds are talking about how there's is broken cuz it fell out of a tree or there dog was chewing on it. If you watch Run's house on MTV he bought his kid 3 CUZ he keeps BREAKING his. Maybe if kids stopped playing DS's and breaking them, and then buying new ones, psp and DS would have equal sales haha. Just some food for thought. When i think about it, I don't know one kid my age who wants a DS and OWNS a psp. On the other hand, lots of little kids i know own a DS so QUIT making up numbers just to be right, it's another hint that i'm arguing with toddler fan boys.

This looks like a matter of Opinion PSP has a lot of cool stuff and has a good library but only 1 has any replay value DS though has a library of games that have replay value but the DS has a lot more games with a score under 4.0 I really like both and want to get a DS but it really comes to a matter of opinion and it is stupid to make bias assumptions with out playing both though you can't play the PSP demos in public (like Gamestop)

I constantly see the DS comment about it being for kids. Funny thing is, the only people I've ever seen say that are teenagers. On these boards or anywhere else, it's extremely rare I see anyone of legal drinking age say the DS is for kids.

I never wanted a game boy, the advance or anything like that, BUT and this is a big BUTT.....I can't see this world without Nintendo in it. I hope psp and DS can live along side each other. I own a psp and will never buy a DS but like i said, i just don't want to see nintendo go away. If it was not for them, i doubt the psp would have never been made up. I'll admit graphics is NOT everything when it comes to hand helds.....just look at GameGear VS GameBoy.........but i like watching movies on my psp at work, and then listening to my MP3's and then looking at some dirty pics i downloaded to my image file ;) and then playing friggin TWISTED METAL with my friend in MS via WIFI.......lets all get along....who's with me?? Is anybody reading this or watching my woman run? lol What a fan boy!! talking about the clown above me...twice the price?? of a ps2 game? it's the same price haha. And we have a killer Burn out game on there, our racing games are pretty good too. Sports games rock on that thing and if audio was not important why would GameSpot have that as part of there rating system?? Act your age and if your older than 18 i feel sorry that you have to bring up basless arguements to prove a point and make your wee-wee feel big. DOes it feel big now?? holding your DS in your hand?? lol thanks for the laugh you clown.

PSP appeals to one age group, 16 - 24 year old males. The Ds is appealing to all ages. And while there are no M rated games out for DS yet, thatz no way to judge a system. What good games are on PSP, Grand Theft I can't aim my weapons, compared to Castlevania, Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, the soon to be released Resident Evil and Final Fantasy 3. And take your audio/video mumbo jumbo to another website, as this one is about and for games. One more thing. Why do I want to play an inferior port of a PS2 game on a handheld that costs twice as much as the console, and has to recharge itz batteries every two or three hours. Plus FPS's suck on PSP. All age debate aside, the PSP is not going to have an easy time against the software powerhouse that is the DS. The DS's current line-up of diverse software blows away the PSP lackluster 2005 games. The consumer answers with dollars(not by age), and the DS is giving the PSP a seriously hard time. I seriously doubt sony will make it's forecast, let alone beat the DS this christmas.

It's actually six hour battery, if your gonna slam a product do some research jr....... :) oh yea, and it is for kids.....just like Harry Potter is for kids but everybody and their mother reads it. Just b/c it is for kids and adults play it, does not negate the fact that it is for kids. Sorry son.

This whole PSP VS DS war is just plain stupid. I am a proud DS owner. And if the lil' doohickey wasn't so expensive, I'd give the PSP a chance. I mean, yea, I've played the games on the DS, excellent IMO, but the PSP has the ability to make high profile games that could offer more than short diversions on the train. Only problem is, no one is going to take advantage of it's usage, But than again, you really can't do high profile on a three hour battery.

Can you people stop throwing cheap shots at the DS and say its for kids? The games are rated so that ANYONE can play them and not just kids. I've seen many people enjoy the DS well over the age of 18 so just stop using "ds is for kids" as one of your points for why psp is beter than ds. A game does not have to be violent for it to be more fun. It's already been proven by DS's stronger library. Just face it, fun is fun.

For the last time you childish fools, everybody has an opinion so respect it. OMG!!! Psp kicks the DS in terms of multimedia functions and graphics. DS kicks in terms of descent games, and i feel is geared more to kids. There are alot of mature games out for psp that you'll never play on DS b/c of the demographic is too young therefore nobody will prolly buy it. PSP = adults DS= 9 year olds and down the variable are the older people who like child games that arent that hard so buy the DS :) a good example i can also lay down is the price. Obviously people like me who have what the grown up world call "income" (say it with me) can buy the psp and not flinch and not cry like a little bit ch with a skin knee about the prices!! Cheap wads can buy the DS, I honestly don't want one though b/c I just don't like the cheesy kid games, no matter what kind of score it gets. Ron Jeremy has a big weiner, does that mean woman find him attractive and will bone him?? NO!!! Not everybody writes hit songs everybody will like, we left that to the bee-gees :(

I have to admit that SONY is pretty edgy with the PSP to release a handheld system with very few games worth having. It's so cool and angsty, as opposed to Nintendo, releasing a system that is dedicated for gamers to play games on, and has a good amount of games worth playing. How dare Nintendo release a game system that acutally PLAYS GAMES?!? Teh h0rr0r! Yes, I own both systems, and PSP has gotten some play time, but the DS has gotten 10X the play from both myself and my wife. We go where the games are.

FFzelda005 u are caomparing ur 8.83 million w/ the sony US only 3 million this year. Anyways i am not nintendo hater or much of a sony fanboy, BUT i know everyone has a different taste & thats y diff. people like diff stuff. If u are into cute & cuddly stuff & dunt care about hardware power NINTENDO is for u. But if ur into edgy, sleek & raw power, u will love the PSP. I persoanlly prefer the psp cuz its all in one multimedia gadget. PSP is for the people who are on the move & constantly play games or listen to music or watch movies while NINTENDO is for people who only use it sometimes for there fun.

im a ds owner and i think neither ones better than the other. Like psp has many multimedia functions and ds has more inovations. PSP has better graphics than the ds, but the ds has more stronger and more fun game titles than the psp and so on. But when it comes to games nintendo kicks ass!

Sports games are leaps and bounds better on the PSP, including racing titles. Madden, Burnout, Twsted Metal. Also, I'd like to see Splinter Cell on a DS vs the PSP. I like nintendo but the DS is for kids.

What's the point of arguing it? Everyones opinion of the two handhelds is gonna be different. I think the DS is better. It's exclusive titles give it an edge. Doesn't mean I'm gonna argue every jackass who feels the PSP is better. You like the PSP? Fine, enjoy it. Just don't force it down my throat.

Im a big supporter of both nintendo and sony. but i bought the DS first because there are more games out and coming out that i want on the DS then are coming out on the PSP, which is sad. put that with the better pricing on the DS and its games and you can see why i bought the DS first

I'd get a DS if Nintendope would release a GTA title on the system where you get to turn our Zelda like the little hooker he is and then beat him down for the cash you just paid. Now that is a good use for that license. Mario could also be a ho considering he handles so much pipe.

The Xbox360 had a very quiet launch, selling only 44,000 units (the original Xbox launched with 107,000 units sold) THE numbers speak more then sony does!

Maybe because you already own a portable DVD player and a MP3, and want something that actually has a fair amount of good games. The DS has sold 8.83 million worldwide, 2.37 million in the US alone.as of September 2005. The DS is a pretty good system.

Why would I want the DS over the PSP? Because I only care about games when it comes to handhelds. And as far as games go, DS is the clear victor.

I think you're right Jharper...I mean with PSP you get sharp graphics and titles that don't involve a plumber...and with DS you get a free pen, which is defective by the way because there's no ink.

I dont get the argument. i own both. the games in the ds library right now are far better than the psp's. but they both have their strong points and once a bit better games come out for the psp i am sure i will dust it off and use it more. just wish its powered on time was a bit better and the L and R triggers were easier to use... and i wish my ds was a bit more comfortable to hold and the d pad and buttons were a little larger.
