Sony Talks PS4 Cross-Play Situation, Offers Some Hope

"I'm confident we'll get to a solution which will be understood and accepted by our gaming community."

Following the recent release of Fortnite on Nintendo Switch, Sony's hardline stance on cross-play has once again become a point of contention. The publisher has come under fire for effectively blocking players from using Fortnite accounts linked to PS4 on other platforms, but a recent statement by the company offers a bit of hope that it may reverse course.

During a Gamelab conference in Spain, Sony Interactive America president and CEO Shawn Layden held a presentation on PlayStation's legacy. Following the presentation, Eurogamer asked Layden about Sony's controversial cross-play policy and whether the company would be open to allowing it in the future.

Now Playing: Sony Boss Gives Hope For PS4 Cross-Play - GameSpot Daily

"We're hearing it," said Layden. "We're looking at a lot of the possibilities. You can imagine that the circumstances around that affect a lot more than just one game. I'm confident we'll get to a solution which will be understood and accepted by our gaming community, while at the same time supporting our business."

While certainly not an outright confirmation that Sony will start to allow cross-play between PS4 and other platforms, it is more promising than the tepid response the company gave earlier this month, shortly after Fortnite launched on Switch. Sony hasn't discussed why it has been so hesitant to allow cross-play, but former Sony developer John Smedley says the reason ultimately boils down to money.

"[W]hen I was at Sony, the stated reason internally for this was money. They didn't like someone buying something on an Xbox and it being used on a Playstation. simple as that. [D]umb reason, but there it is," Smedley said on Twitter.

Fortnite isn't the only game affected by Sony's policy. The PS4 versions of Rocket League and Minecraft don't allow cross-play with other platforms either, although the Xbox One and Switch versions do. Nintendo and Microsoft have capitalized on the controversy by releasing a joint ad that touts the cross-play feature in Minecraft.

#@playstationzone: I fail to see how it ever effected their business. As the top selling console this gen by far, the chances that someone would be spending money on other consoles and using it on a PS4 is far lower than the chances of the exact opposite happening.

@ZIMdoom: Actually, after I got quadruple charged by Sony from trying to buy Paragon coins (a now shutdown game also by Epic) I have been making all my coin purchases for my PS4 Fortnite account on the PC client. My laptop isn't good enough to actually play the game but I can still get around the menus. So if they allow it so people can log on to say the Switch then what's stopping people from buying their coins on there instead?

Like I said, I already do it on PC but that doesn't mean they can't try to eliminate as many alternate options as possible.

@playstationzone: Translation: SONY is trying to find a way to profit from this and pry more money from their customer's wallet and/or developers before they will allow it.

Possibilities.... keep up the PR speak while the other companies have it figured out. More and more games will be releasing with crossplay between Switch and Xbox. I'm sure Sony will continue looking in to the possibilities then as well.

@Barighm: Except everything is a lot different now. It's 10 times as worse now for Sony doing it. For one, LIVE was $50 last gen, PSN free. Don't forget how unsecure PSN was last gen as well. MS was supposed to say yes to that deal?

PSN and LIVE are both $60 now, more secure, and the consoles are more similar in architecture now than ever. LIVE still has a large number of players, Switch is selling really good. WHO THE **** CARES WHO IS WINNING. You can save your faux outrage at MS from last generation for some one else.

@b00me: Ah yes; the "who cares who is winning" crowd... The lot of you seemed to care very much about who was winning last generation. Funny how that works isn't it? But you guys all seem to want to ignore that fact that Microsoft was still saying "No" to crossplay several years into the current generation. They were so anti-crossplay that they had zero intentions for it this generation and actually started work on the technologies for it in mid-2015; while Sony has been a pioneer of crossplay for years with the PS4 launching with crossplay capabilities.

It wasn't until EA let slip that the PS4 had almost twice the installed base as the XBox One that Microsoft was suddenly all for crossplay. EA's slip-up happened in the middle of 2015; Microsoft started to 'tease' their crossplay intentions in February, 2016.

So you can be assured that both Sony and Microsoft care very much. This is all about money; and Microsoft is trying very hard to pressure Sony into allowing it because they'll be the ones gaining much more financially from it.

@BigFeef: It doesn't matter what the stance was years ago. It's what would be best for gamers, and it would be best for developers and their games. I don't give a **** about who's piece of plastic is winning. I criticize MS more than I do Sony. I play on both consoles. My only concern is gaming moving forward instead of being stuck in this fanboy console warrior pissing matches you idiots have.

@b00me: Don't be naive; of course it matters. Again; this is about money. Would I like crossplay on all consoles? Yes; I've been vocal about it since the last generation. But I also understand the business side of things in the gaming industry; and what Microsoft is trying to pull is a thinly veiled attempt to bolster their own business at the expense of Sony. And of course Sony knows this; because they did the exact same thing to Microsoft last generation. The only difference this time around is that Sony already has a huge investment in crossplay; because as I said, they are the pioneers and current leaders in console crossplay.

What I find highly amusing are all the people who are suddenly for crossplay when last generation and for most of this current generation, they really could have cared less... Not calling you out specifically; but just saying.

@BigFeef: Sony is pioneering in cross-play but they only have like two more cross-playable titles than the Xbox? This is cross-play between two different companies I'm talking about btw and not bullshit like the PS3 playing with the Vita or the PS4.

@mcnichoj: Besides the fact that you're spouting garbage; which any quick search of crossplay titles can prove in less than 30s...

Using your logic; XBox One crossplay titles would only be valid if they're with the Switch or PS4? Because you do know that Microsoft also owns Windows right? So XBox and PC crossplay wouldn't be valid... using your logic...

@BigFeef: You really think MS had no idea what their sales were relative to Sony until EA said something? Sales numbers get released by companies every single year, (if not more for shareholders).

@ZIMdoom: Of course they do; but very few outside of Microsoft knows the actual sales figures beyond guesstimations like EA did. And that is because they keep their sales numbers very, very secret; they still don't release their sale numbers even now. Which is a huge turnaround from them proudly throwing it out there every month last generation...

So no; Microsoft does not release the sales numbers for the XBox One; they said they would no longer do so in October of 2015. The reason they gave was that they're using a "different metric for success" than sales.

Sounds like they're unable to break away from the strictly business standpoint and start doing things for their consumers instead, which in turn, will typically make business better with happier customers.

@jayskoon93: In my opinion, their current business standpoint makes no real sense anyway. I see no evidence or data that supports their position that allowing users to play with their Epic Games account on another console will somehow cost them money. Just because I log onto my brothers Xbox one day when I am visiting him in another city, doesn't mean I'm going to spend a bunch of money on the MS store and then bring that back to my house/PS4. Hell, I just wanted the option to play handheld on my switch and very likely would have still made all my Fortnite purchases on the PS4...which means Nintendo is losing out. Since the PS4 is easily the top selling console this gen, the chances of Sony losing out vs other consoles just doesn't add up. The main console will be the main place people spend their money. But now they are angering users and I have already stopped playing Fortnite on PS4 for the rest of this season. I've created a new account for the Switch and once S5 starts, all future Fortnite purchases I make will be going to Nintendo. So again, Sony is losing business for nor logical reason.

@jayskoon93: Happier customers, sure, but not sure how a guy who buys all his stuff on Xbox while playing with his PS4 buddies makes business better for Sony.

@Barighm: Well they are stupid enough to think that by disallowing it that it will somehow force someone to buy a PS4...and that ain't happening. And people are smart enough to see through that, even though SONY thinks they aren't. Their current stance makes them look like douchebags, which certainly isn't good for business in the long run...look how well the PS3 did at launch when they displayed a similar arrogant attitude.

@Barighm: Because people could just as easily switch to a PS4 for their games while still playing with their friends on Xbox. That's how Sony makes it better. This idea and fear that people would just buy an Xbox over a PS4 from now is irrational fanboy BS.

@b00me: Not entirely, a lot of people merely switched to one console when the new generation came out just to be able to keep playing with their friends (who were also switching consoles). If cross-play is possible than all those people who merely switched just to be able to play with their friends wouldn't have had to do so at all. Thus that means Sony would've lost money. From a business stand point it makes total sense in terms of logic and it probably could have occurred too. From a consumer stand point however, it really isn't the best situation though. I mean I'd love cross play as much as everyone else, but I get the risk of it too.

@DarkCaptain3: Go visit any Xbox forum right now. You think Xbox fans are happy with their exclusives situation? Are going to wait another 4-5 years for them to actually get any new games made from their "new" studios? Sony could steal a lot console owners away right now. A lot of people would switch to Sony if they could still play those multiplats with friends through crossplay. Sony's exclusives are that much better right now and they are missing a perfect opportunity.

@b00me: What I said was more of a thing when these two consoles first came out (and believe me, I've talked to plenty who did this). I myself was one who actually bought a ps4 for a myriad of reasons despite being on the 360 during the previous generation. One of those reasons myself being that my friends were migrating over as they couldn't stand the younger kids playing a lot of the games we did (CoD, me and my buddies were serious CoD gamers). Other reasons did factor in however as you said such as exclusives (though for me the only exclusives that ever matter are rpg's), as well as when I heard that Xbox One's OS would be Windows 10 (can't stand the OS, loved Windows 7). At the time the only games that were exclusive to xbox that I would even play were Halo and Gears of War 3, and this was RARE.

@DarkCaptain3: I don't believe this at all. While it isn't completely impossible, I suspect this represents an extremely small number of gamers and gamers who tend to only play cross-plats anyway. I find it much more believable that gamers buy their console of choice for exclusives and the games that are available than they do based on what multi-plat shooter they like to play with their friends. In fact, I would wager that people like this will just buy what their friends buy regardless of online play AND that these types of people probably buy the same console as the previous gen and/or care more about the most popular console than what games are offered. Either way, I don't see "cross play" really effecting console sales one way or another right now.

@DarkCaptain3: In other words, you are saying that SONY sees their customers as sheep. I'll buy that, and their business practices this generation back that up considerably.
