Sony Talks PS4 Cross-Play Situation, Offers Some Hope

"I'm confident we'll get to a solution which will be understood and accepted by our gaming community."

Following the recent release of Fortnite on Nintendo Switch, Sony's hardline stance on cross-play has once again become a point of contention. The publisher has come under fire for effectively blocking players from using Fortnite accounts linked to PS4 on other platforms, but a recent statement by the company offers a bit of hope that it may reverse course.

During a Gamelab conference in Spain, Sony Interactive America president and CEO Shawn Layden held a presentation on PlayStation's legacy. Following the presentation, Eurogamer asked Layden about Sony's controversial cross-play policy and whether the company would be open to allowing it in the future.

Now Playing: Sony Boss Gives Hope For PS4 Cross-Play - GameSpot Daily

"We're hearing it," said Layden. "We're looking at a lot of the possibilities. You can imagine that the circumstances around that affect a lot more than just one game. I'm confident we'll get to a solution which will be understood and accepted by our gaming community, while at the same time supporting our business."

While certainly not an outright confirmation that Sony will start to allow cross-play between PS4 and other platforms, it is more promising than the tepid response the company gave earlier this month, shortly after Fortnite launched on Switch. Sony hasn't discussed why it has been so hesitant to allow cross-play, but former Sony developer John Smedley says the reason ultimately boils down to money.

"[W]hen I was at Sony, the stated reason internally for this was money. They didn't like someone buying something on an Xbox and it being used on a Playstation. simple as that. [D]umb reason, but there it is," Smedley said on Twitter.

Fortnite isn't the only game affected by Sony's policy. The PS4 versions of Rocket League and Minecraft don't allow cross-play with other platforms either, although the Xbox One and Switch versions do. Nintendo and Microsoft have capitalized on the controversy by releasing a joint ad that touts the cross-play feature in Minecraft.

I don't take that statement as a possibility of it happening. It sounds like they're going to make up some bs excuse that their players will "understand" and "be comfortable with" for why they won't do it, or they'll charge people to import a character.

I don't want to just be able to use a character on a different console, I want the different consoles to be able to play against each other in games online. Like a PS vs Xbox battle online.

Even though PS4 has better games, I bet the Xbox crowd would beat the hell out of PS4 players in online games ?.

@Vodoo: I agree 100% with you. Sony has those exclusives that do stand out although I don't think exclusives rule,l. The majority of PlayStation players do play single player games and for longer, which has left a gap in skill on multiplayer games for sure as Xbox has the best players on co op and multiplayer games and there community's are set up for all of this competition. Hands down xboxer's have been down with competition for alot longer, now I am not saying PlayStation users would be completely useless but if it was a bet, Xbox gamers would be going in as favourites in an online MP environment.

Needless to say though I think let's gets these consoles wars on properly as they should of always been played out and not through some tedious circle arguing on forums about who has most exclusives or most powerful console, let's see the stats of the console wars start showing.

If you wanted more people buying stuff on Playstation, the company should have kept PS+ on PS4 exactly the same as it was on PS3 instead of turning it into Xbox Live Gold with lipstick. Steam went from 65 million users to 125 million right around the launch period of the PS4 and the combination of free online and good third party support likely played a role in that considering it took 10 years to get there to begin with.

@Jinzo_111887: But it's a completely daft thing to say by Sony and fanboys supporting the no cross play opinion.

Hands down if anyone is going to buy something after finishing with friends and moving to another consoles market, they would realistically go and buy the exclusives, and that would be more for Sony if anything.

Inaccurate article. Fortnite, Rocket League, and FFXIV all have cross-play with PC and PS4. There are more, but these are the games I have played personally. Terraria cross-play with Vita is pretty darn fun too.

It's funny that instead of focusing on getting more games and actually attract players to their consoles, some companies would scoop so low as to ride on the hate wagon. And promote it like that's the only one good thing about their products.

Guess that when you can't compete in a fair fight, you just have to do it dirty, eh?

@solid_snake1461: Dirty you mean as in Sony and how they started all the bull crap shadyness off in the console industry by being the ones to dig up every bit of exclusivity while sega was having a bad time and they knew it, only to help drive the nail in sega coffin which is the reaon why we dont see sega around as much anymore.

If Sony hadn't of done what they did and moved in so aggressive then sega would be still making machines and games more than what they are today, instead they are now pretty much odd games developers on console and stick to mobile game development.

Sony are the forefathers of screwing others over all for there own needs in this industry and they would spite everyone even there own gamers so long as they are the only ones in the game.

If I buy COD on Xbox I should not have to buy the same game on PS4. If you buy music on Itunes you can play it on multiple items, do you know why? You purchased a License to grant you the rights to use the content.

Also why aren't people upset about all the other games that do not allow you to carry over progress on a different console. We are fighting the wrong fight.

Also Fortnite is a free game and the cosmetics are the only thing that people are mad about. Regardless if your character has a soccer outfit you can still play the game and have fun.

@BankAMG: Yes we live in a day and age where now games should be made playable on every device once purchased once and it's great to see some devs getting on board with this while other devs ie Sony are clearly in it for the money and want ever penny they can get.

@BankAMG: You can actually level up a game pass that you have to pay for and is time limited to the season. So if you're a PS4/Switch user, that's game progress you can't get on the go.

Sony allows, and has allowed cross play since the ps2 era. Also your article is wrong because Rocket league, a game you call out, does have ps4/pc crossplay. It just doesn't have ps4/x1 crossplay.

Sony does not want to allow cross play with xbox. If the roles were reversed would microsoft allow cross play? oh wait, we already know they wouldn't because they refused during the 360 era.

How about we use ff14 as an example A PS4/PC crossplay game (that according to you does not exist)

http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/07/09/why-final-fantasy-xiv-isnt-coming-to-xbox-360-or-xbox-one

Well FF14 is just one game........

https://gamerant.com/microsoft-rejected-portal-2-steam-cross-platform-seb-76410/

When the roles were reversed, Microsoft refused. Maybe your article should be about microsoft reaping what they sow? Too bad for microsoft there are over twice as many ps4s than there are xbox1.

So yes, applaud Microsoft for making changes to their policy, but they didn't do it "For the Players", they did it to stay relevant. They did it as a PR stunt, in hopes people would forget all the terrible DRM, always online, spyware nonsense they tried to push on customers when the x1 launched.

These articles ripping on sony are so biased that I am honestly surprised they weren't written by Microsoft Eddie.

EDIT: Yes the articles are years old, the point was missed by many people it would seem. The articles I linked were during the last console generation, because they were relevant to how Microsoft acted in that time period.

@Maize84: Those articles are very old and irrelevant.

MS didn't want to open up play with Steam because XBL was a closed system at the time. They didn't have the architecture built into Windows yet to keep it more secure.

@Vodoo: Those articles are entirely relevant to how microsoft acted at the time they were written. The author did not or would not mention microsoft's previous policy, or that it reversed it. or that they only changed it in 2016. 2 years after the xbox 1 launch and the complete domination of the ps4 over the xbox 1.

Also, roughly in the time you deem irrelevant, the ps3 was hit with a data breach, which severally hurt Sony. Which might add to why they aren't to keen to open up their systems to microsoft.

Just because information isn't brand new, doesn't make it irrelevant.

@Maize84: lol, calling bias on SonySpot. Xbox 360 supported cross-play on Final Fantasy XI between PC AND PS2. Xbox 360 also supported cross-play with several titles to PC. How many cross-play games outside of one FF title did the PS3 have? I can only recall one title but that was to the Vita.
Edit: I actually looked it up and PS3 had a ton of cross-play titles but it's all with other Sony consoles.

@Maize84: Nice 7 year old articles, they literally proved nothing. I'm a firm believer that MS is for the players ever since Spencer took over, he's a true gamer and really cares about what we want as fellow gamers.

"They did it as a PR stunt, in hopes people would forget all the terrible DRM, always online, spyware nonsense they tried to push on customers when the x1 launched." Only Fanboys bring this up after all this time. lol

Everything you just stated is ancient news.

@lordinuyasha21: The ENTIRE point of going that far back is to show people how they acted when they were above sony. They haven't been for years. So you missed the whole point of what I said. When they were on top, they didn't and wouldn't do business, now they aren't top dog, they want sony to do what they wouldn't.

Sony is just doing to microsoft, what microsoft did to them years ago. To show that, I have to link articles from years ago, to show how microsoft acted years ago.

@lordinuyasha21: Wow; just wow...

Spencer cares about gamers? Really? Spencer cares about the bottom line; period. If he cared so much about gamers; then why does Microsoft still not making solid investments in first party games? Why is Microsoft still not opening up XBox Live to allow it's members to play free to play games and subscription MMOs without having to pay for online multiplayer via Gold like Sony does? Why does Microsoft still not allow crossplay with the PC on a number of titles that allow it with the PS4? But yeah; Spencer and Microsoft are all for the gamers; right?

On this being "ancient news"; it's still very, very relevant. Microsoft has always been against crossplay as a policy for years. As I mentioned in another post here in the comments; they did not start to work on crossplay capabilities until the middle of 2015; while the PS4 had those capabilities at its launch. Microsoft did not have crossplay ready for the XBox One until April of 2016... a mythical time long ago according to you since it's "ancient news".

@BigFeef: -"Microsoft still not making solid investments in first party games?" They just bought out 4 studios and created one more which doubles the amount of first party studios they have.

-"Why is Microsoft still not opening up XBox Live to allow it's members to play free to play games and subscription MMOs without having to pay for online multiplayer." If you have an Xbox you probably already have gold or if any of your household have gold on your Xbox you have gold plus its cheap, quit being a whiny cheapskate.

-Why does Microsoft still not allow crossplay with the PC on a number of titles that allow it with the PS4? You're whining again here as most games do. Not to mention the cross buy that they're pushing really hard.

-But yeah; Spencer and Microsoft are all for the gamers; right? Here you're actually right about something. If you've ever actually watched interviews with him or even met the guy (I have) you can tell pretty quickly that he's a genuine dude. You're still stuck on the fact that Don Mattrick (former head of Xbox) severely messed up the debut and was the one that spearheaded many of the awful policies that Spencer inherited and reversed.

And as for your last paragraph all the haters love to latch on to old news and use it as ammo over and over again, no one cares who spearheaded crossplay, what matters is the fact that its good for gamers in general and that its finally becoming a reality with many companies pushing for it besides Sony.

I have the best versions of all the current gen consoles and I love all of them but cant stand when an ignorant fanboy posts stupid crap.

@BigFeef:
-The majority don't care about exclusives. Seven of the fifty top sellers on PS4 are exclsuives and they relates t o less than a sixth of the amount of consoles moved.
-Overall better service and supporting automated cloud storage for all their data whether it be game data or saved clips/screenshots (unlike on PS4 where you have to manually upload everything).
-What the Hell are you even talking about? The Xbox only has like two of the same games as PS4 that have cross-play. Xbox One obviously won't have cross-play for Street Fighter V because it doesn't have Street Fighter V. As for a game like Raiders of a Broken Planet I assume the devs only have it with PC and PS4 cross-play is because PS4 is a higher priority to develop for than the Xbox so they can keep the game at the same build for PC and PS4 more efficiently than they could if they included Xbox.

Microsoft would be doing cross-play on the Xbox 360 as early as 2007 with games they developed with their own studios. Sony wouldn't have a cross-play title on PS3 until 2013 and it wasn't even done by them.

@mcnichoj: So Final Fantasy XI, the first major game to feature crossplay on a console, the PS2 in fact, didn't happen until 2013? You people are amazing with your time warps! That happened in 2002 for your information.

And just so you know; Microsoft developed one game with crossplay on the XBox 360 and PC, a Games for Windows Live title; screwed it up big time (mainly because Games for Windows was a joke) and then dropped crossplay until mid-2015 when they started to work on it for the XBox One. And before you bring it up; the XBox Play Anywhere thing they did was not crossplay.

At least try to get your facts straight; sheesh...

@AsmodeusAzarak: They lost last gen hard. They struggled for years just barely beating the Xbox 360 for second place. Not to mention the PS3 was a technological Frankenstein abomination that resulted in some of the worst multiplatform ports any gen has seen. I doubt cross-platform play is the thing that takes them down but hopefully people start to see the light on how anti-consumer Sony is.

@mcnichoj: Wrong. The PS3 outsold the XBox 360 worldwide by about a million units; and that includes the units of 360s that were affected by RROD and had to be replaced but were still counted as a sale. The only region where the XBox outsold the PS3 was in North America. What a way to lose hard; right?

@BigFeef: RRoD replacements only count as a sale if a person was stupid enough not to use their free warranty. I got two free replaced consoles. By the time my Phat PS3 died the warranty was long expired so I had to pay to have it repaired by some random person in hopes they could save my game data.

They ONLY sold a million more units despite selling more in two whole other regions?

Had the PS4 not done so well, they would have been done. hey, at least they sold a million more plastic boxes than that other company that sells plastic boxes.

@Maize84: How are people stealing data from Sony when Epic accounts are their own separate entity stored on Epic's servers?
Not to mention if they're already cross-playing with PC users, isn't that more likely where they'll get their data compromised from?

Again. This issue is not about cross play. Whether or not my kids can play minecraft or Rocket League with someone on Xbox or Switch is completely irrelevant. The issue is how Sony can legally lock a third party account to their own system without informing users? The issue is what right Sony has to do this considering the risk it poses for people who don't even own a PS4 at all, but once made the mistake of logging into their epic account on a friend's PS4?

Yes, technically the issues overlap. But whether or not Sony will allow their users to play Fortnite with Xbox/Switch users is completely different issue (and I would argue a far less serious issue) than whether or not Sony has the right to lock a third party account to their own console without informing users. The fact the gaming media can't seem to figure this out is stunning to me and shows how lazy and ignorant they are being. I am a PS4 owner and have been a PS user since launch day of the PS1. I do not care at all if I ever play Fortnite with people who own other consoles. I really could not care less about that. What I DO want is to be able to play with my Epic games account on my Switch when my kids are using the PS4 or when I'm away from the TV but still want to play.

And here is the bigger issue. I've now created a new account to play on Switch and plan on spending all future Fortnite money there in the future. I will never again spend another dollar on Fortnite on the PS4. What happens then if Sony does eventually change their policy? What happens then? I now have two accounts with completely separate items and purchases associated with them. Will I be able to link them together? The longer Sony drags their feet on this the more they stand to lose AND the more trouble they are causing for themselves, Epic and users.

@ZIMdoom: I assume they have something in their clause that addresses that, "We legally impose the right to at any point with the regards to a third party account to go **** you".
