Sony Responds to Microsoft's Invite to Connect Xbox One and PS4 Networks

PSN custodian doesn't directly acknowledge Microsoft’s open invitation, but suggests it is open-minded to partnerships.

On Monday Microsoft publicly invited other platform holders to allow the same games to be played online across different console networks. Such an unprecedented move, if enacted, could bring an end to more than a decade of segregation between the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Sony Responds to Microsoft’s Invite to Connect Xbox One and PS4 Networks

Sony’s response, issued one day later to GameSpot, suggests the market-leading platform holder remains open-minded about cross-console play but stopped short of discussing a deal with Xbox Live.

"PlayStation has been supporting cross-platform play between PC on several software titles starting with Final Fantasy 11 on PS2 and PC back in 2002,” reads the statement from the corporation.

“We would be happy to have the conversation with any publishers or developers who are interested in cross platform play."

Sony's response was to a direct question about whether it would be interested in working with Microsoft.

It is unclear how to read into Sony’s decision to avoid mentioning other console platform holders in its statement, whether that means it is still evaluating its options or is outright against such plans. GameSpot has contacted the corporation for further clarification.

On Monday Microsoft made the eye-catching announcement that it will support cross-platform play between Xbox One, Windows 10, and other "online multiplayer networks." The move effectively opens the Xbox Live platform so that it can accommodate players on other game networks.

The first Xbox One game announced to take advantage of this cross-platform connectivity will be Rocket League, which will soon allow Xbox One and PC customers to play against each other online.

Such a feature is already present in the PS4 version, which has always allowed PSN players to set up matches with players on Steam.

But Microsoft has indicated that it now wants to bridge the gap between its console and Sony’s, and went as far as saying the ground-work had been complete. On Monday its indie developer director Chris Charla said:

"In addition to natively supporting cross-platform play between Xbox One and Windows 10 games that use Xbox Live, we're enabling developers to support cross-network play as well.

"This means players on Xbox One and Windows 10 using Xbox Live will be able to play with players on different online multiplayer networks--including other consoles and PC networks."

You actually kind of have to admire Microsoft for this move - all of a sudden, they're the good guy.

Sony said "publisher or developer" - that, to me, sounds like an undercut of Microsoft, who - in this case - is the platform holder.

If this is going to happen, game developers themselves are going to have to go to Sony and say, "We want cross-platform with Xbox", and Sony will be forced to explicitly say no, or to give in.

Either way, Microsoft looks like the good guy for initiating this. Well played, Spencer. Well played.

I don't understand this at all, what will happen to the competition within the market place now? Will I only be buying my console (s) for exclusives in the future? hasn't something like this been tried before with the pc, counter strike global? With the pc having the obvious advantage? I'm not against this I used to think it would be a great idea, this should be great for gamers?

So much stupidity and bitterness in these comments. Yes, we all know that MS didn't do it out of their own good hearts and there's definetely a catch behind that move that would benefit them. So yeah, news flash ppl, you're not the smart ones. What amazes me though is that very few ppl had actually stepped back for a second and just imagined how such a feature, despite the motives behind it, would be beneficial for those that actually matter:us, the gamers. But sure, why do that? Stay inside your favourite closed networks, worship your gods and just storm in here to show off your c^*#s and be the deranged fanboys(of either Sony or MS it doesn't matter) you are. But is that what passes as "cool" nowadays? To just plainly hate and coplaining on everything?

@itchyflop: the statement was a request for others to come to xbl. Msft isn't agreeing to cross play on any server, but xbl servers and only their servers. They gain because it might slow down user abandonment from xbl, as well as likely cost nintendo or sony some fee to use it, which they would pay up front rather than bill their users.. so really msft has everything to gain, and the others would only see this as bad for them. Especiay since everybody else has been doing public cross play for the last 3 generations and msft was against it the whole time.

@itchyflop: The PS4 has outsold the XB1 by more than 2x. And that is just so far; these consoles have another four years or so before the new model comes out. That sales discrepancy will only grow larger over the next year or two. This move will a) help MS convince developers to continue making games for the XB, b) give XB1 players a larger player base to game with (which will stop people from switching because they cannot find matches on Live), and c) retain exclusives other than house brands,

Ultimately this has nothing to do with the gamers, this is about MS trying to keep the XB alive instead of going the way of Sega. Props to them for being more proactive than Sega was with their hardware.

@trayvian: The case with Sega was entirely different. Back then they already had 2 major competitors with Nintendo and the evergrowing PlayStation. And at 2000 another major competitor came in: MS with the Xbox. The market was oversaturated with 4(!) consoles trying to get a piece of the pie. So one had to bite it and that was Dreamcast. And the signs were already there with the poor sales of Saturn from the previous gen. So after two mediocre entries (sales wise) Sega decided to withdraw from the hardware market entirely.

Today there are only 2 major competitors, Sony and MS. Nintendo is a different situation since they aim(mostly) on a different target group. Even if it comes second in sales the Xbox still has a major market and a strong following to support it. So unless Nintendo step up with their game(the NX will be a crusial point in this) or another major competitor comes in(which doesn't seem to be the case at least in the forseeable future) i don't think the Xbox is going anywhere anytime soon. And frankly that's not a good scenario as far as customers are concerned. The more important being that competition is of the best interest in a certain market.

@itchyflop: I don't know what MS would gain. Probably more sales? It's just a speculation since such multibillion enterprises always have a purpose behind everything they're doing. It's not a bad thing, it's how things work. What we could gain as customers from that is what really matters.

As for the hate? I'm just as amazed as you. Just read the comments below and you'll get an idea.

P.S. Unless you're talking about "me" hating. In that case my post wasn't a hateful one, just a rant.

@itchyflop: @redalert539 The reason MS is proposing this is to prevent the customer from choosing the PS4 over the X1 just because the PS4 player base is larger and its MP games will have more packed servers. MS has a lot to gain from this while PS4 actually stands to lose that competitive advantage. Gamers on both sides have everything to gain by crossplay. As for me, I think it would great to have crossplay, but I'd like to have the ability to switch it on or off. That way, if PSN or XBL is running a little slow, then you won't have the issues in MP games where someone else's high ping is ruining it for everybody.

@93ChevyNut: hi thanks

Im confused, surely Sony agree to cross play then, as their competing market would have an edge over them, or at the very least a choice whether to buy either machine, does it fall completely on exclusives like uncharted on ps4 or forza on x1?

People are so ignorant. This brings nothing but benefits to games. More money to the developers, better matchmaking online, increased longevity for all 3rd Party games that support it. Never having to own the same console as friends to play the same 3rd Party games (if supported).

It's far from both networks joining together. It's far from all of the games joining together. It's an experiment worth trying out. It's literally a win-win for devs and consumers. I'd be surprised if we don't see cooperation.

WOW and it wasnt that long ago Microsoft said that cross chat couldnt be possible between 360 and Bone.

seriously go eat a big juicy one, gaming consoles deserve to die because you tried to milk us this gen with your greedy gem style business models.

its funny how as more people walk away from consoles and gaming because of the greedy in game currency style business models how quickly more hope and hype of things we cant touch or hold hit the headlines.

keep back peddling.

Who cares.

This is just Microsoft trying to reduce ps4 sales. And look like the good guys. They should of had this idea at launch. Not near death.

As for pc gamers. Who wants to play with some geek with a hunch back and twisted wrist who can only play with mods/cheats to claim victory.

It would be cool how ever to have xbone vs ps4 in some battles.

Not as a permanent feature. But as a battle weekend once in a while.

Im pretty bad as fps shooters. Racing games would be good as they never sell that well so i could see this helping the longtivity of these games. Also knowing pc gamers are sitting there pressing their w,a,s,d keys would be good for a laugh.

I would absolutely love a completely unified Rocket League community, if not complete cross-play between networks. But we all know this is an obviously ploy by Microsoft to save face and 1-up Sony again, right? Let's not forget they were only open to "Cross-play with Xbox on Windows 10" nonsense not too long ago. This is all MS and Sony have been doing this console generation.

At least this is something that's somewhat unprecedented. And don't get me wrong, the changes that Microsoft in particular have made are mostly quite good. I just think it's sad that we have to be *glad* when one console has something that used to be standard, like playing used games or having backwards compatibility.

Inb4 some xbox worshipper calls me a sony fanboy when I don't even own a Ps4

@jumbo: I don't know where you and others get that mindset from, but it's just false. Everything from MS since the bad E3 has been great and positive, unless I've missed something.

What's wrong with cross-play on Xbox to PC. You're literally just looking for excuses to hate them. It's easy to blame a cooperation for their actions on backwards compatibility without researching into why it's not possible in the first place. As for used games, they've been in the picture since the console launched. Not sure what you're meant to be passing over with that.

@HD_ITeRRoRiZeI: I'd like to post a comment about how I already said that the changes were good, and how I already said that cross-play was good, and how I was criticizing both Sony and Microsoft for turning basic features into novelties, but I am so tired of people on the internet not knowing how to read that I'm not sure how to say anything anymore. I will add that I think MS has been better this generation, outside of that first E3

@HD_ITeRRoRiZeI: believe me, I do plenty of complaining about Sony on my own time. I only wrote directed the comment towards Microsoft because certain people seemed to forget all about their old Cross-play policies, which they were firmly standing by not too long ago.

Also try reading this until it clicks, if you find it hard to read my comments. Shouldn't be hard, it's only the first sentence of my original post.

Misleading title. Microsoft didn't mention PlayStation Network in their statement, they were deliberately vague to make it sound like they were leading the way; when in fact, Sony has been leading the way with cross-platform network play. Sony made the right call highlighting their history of allowing it without making it look like they're bending to "pressure" from Microsoft. To think, people fell for it hook, line and sinker and said the ball was in "Sony's court".

@Earthen80: Well, it was targeted towards PSN, be-it indirectly, because the only other console with a online network and that is compatible for Cross-platform play with XBL is PSN. Well, this time you can't deny they're stepping up their game. I'm not gonna deny Sony has lead cross-platform play, because they have.

I still can't see how this will come out in taters. it's the game developers decision, ultimately, to choose which platforms have cross-platform play.

Most of my friends have Playstations so it doesn't really affect me, but it would be pretty sweet if this happened. There is no reason for these closed networks, and for the people interested in multiplayer this would enlarge the communities and give them a longer shelf life so it's good for everyone. Keep PC gamers the hell away from FPS games though lmao, mouse + keyboard is too good.
