Sony Responds to Microsoft's Invite to Connect Xbox One and PS4 Networks

PSN custodian doesn't directly acknowledge Microsoft’s open invitation, but suggests it is open-minded to partnerships.

Sony has issued an encouraging but indecisive response to Microsoft’s invitation to unite the online networks of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One within certain games.

On Monday Microsoft publicly invited other platform holders to allow the same games to be played online across different console networks. Such an unprecedented move, if enacted, could bring an end to more than a decade of segregation between the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Sony Responds to Microsoft’s Invite to Connect Xbox One and PS4 Networks

Sony’s response, issued one day later to GameSpot, suggests the market-leading platform holder remains open-minded about cross-console play but stopped short of discussing a deal with Xbox Live.

"PlayStation has been supporting cross-platform play between PC on several software titles starting with Final Fantasy 11 on PS2 and PC back in 2002,” reads the statement from the corporation.

“We would be happy to have the conversation with any publishers or developers who are interested in cross platform play."

Sony's response was to a direct question about whether it would be interested in working with Microsoft.

It is unclear how to read into Sony’s decision to avoid mentioning other console platform holders in its statement, whether that means it is still evaluating its options or is outright against such plans. GameSpot has contacted the corporation for further clarification.

On Monday Microsoft made the eye-catching announcement that it will support cross-platform play between Xbox One, Windows 10, and other "online multiplayer networks." The move effectively opens the Xbox Live platform so that it can accommodate players on other game networks.

The first Xbox One game announced to take advantage of this cross-platform connectivity will be Rocket League, which will soon allow Xbox One and PC customers to play against each other online.

Such a feature is already present in the PS4 version, which has always allowed PSN players to set up matches with players on Steam.

But Microsoft has indicated that it now wants to bridge the gap between its console and Sony’s, and went as far as saying the ground-work had been complete. On Monday its indie developer director Chris Charla said:

"In addition to natively supporting cross-platform play between Xbox One and Windows 10 games that use Xbox Live, we're enabling developers to support cross-network play as well.

"This means players on Xbox One and Windows 10 using Xbox Live will be able to play with players on different online multiplayer networks--including other consoles and PC networks."

Please don't do this Sony. This is a really bad deal for PSN gamers. When you get to know gamers you can connect to them through the PS4 environment, it works so well as it is.

Generally Xbox gamers are known to be extremely disrespectful, loud and arrogant. The last thing I want is to play any game with them. PSN is a good community of likeminded people who are generally very friendly and get along well. This only benefits Xbox, not PSN gamers.

@cj_stone: Actually, PSN gamers are pretty bad too. One game that comes to mind, GTAV. Really hate how GTAV doesn't have chat off by default.

@cj_stone: that's absurd... especially since most of the xbox customer base switched to ps4 only...

The real issue is that it would only happen on xbl according to msft, otherwise they won't do it. This is itself an issue because of the poor performance of their xbl network, poor security, and having msft in control and access of all of that data juat spells disaster, and will all likely cost us in some way to use.

@freeryu: you're kidding right?

Did you not see all the reports covering this since April of 2014???

Now it is so sudden to you that you can't beleive even the possibility of it?

Which news site do you want a link to? Because they have all reported on it.

A huge chunk of ps4 sales went to users who owned an xbox 360 but no longer do. Additional corroboration is found in msft's own stats as well (such as if they had stayed with xbox therw should have been more xbox sales and higher subscription growth rather than decline...

There are also the qrtly Nielson reports but I'm sure you don't think surveys count for this, they only count for other things......

@rosinmonkekyx17: That's merely based on my experience. As I said, not all Xbox gamers are bad. Some of my closest friends are on Xbox and that's why I was on Xbox for a long time. I just noticed over the years that I personally had a lot more positive experiences on PSN as it seems to be more of a global community of people as I became friends with people from Europe, Asia and South America on PSN opposed to Xbox where it seems like everyone I meet is from the U.S. So I think Xbox is losing people in part because of a lot of disrespectful gamers on their network. I'm not closed minded, I think Xbox simply doesn't punish people for bad behavior as much as Sony perhaps. Surely there is a reason for what I and others are noticing that the worst kind of gamers prefer Xbox... not to say Xbox gamers are the worst kind though. There is an important distinction which you should understand.

@jedikv: I know idealistically it should sound nice. But as is, from my experiences with the Xbox community I am simply not optimistic about it. That's my opinion. By all means you can write your own comment expressing your enthusiasm for this idea and I won't call your comments "complaints".

@jedikv: well, actually it is. This isn't out in the open, as it has been already but through legal contracting msft blocks on multiplat titles. Msft would host it, on xbl. This will cost somebody, and msft will be in control of it... on an unsecure and inferior network.

What really needs to happen is msft needs to simpy open the door both ways, and let thwir customers come outside and play togethwr where ever they want like sony did in 2002...

@cj_stone: so very true I have both Xbox and Sony my young adult son has Xbox. On the Xbox they are loud obnoxious, foul mouthed, disrespectful, and arrogant. That is exactly why I do not use Xbox for live gameing at all. So I hope Sony keeps things as is or if they can set it up to where you can choose to play with just Sony players or join Xbox but don't make them just both platforms joined.

I know a number of gamers that would quit and a number of parents who would not let their children play online if they had to play with xboxers

@badbrad1961: Yes, just being around that environment eventually molds a person's mind into becoming like that. I think generally gamers from Nintendo and Sony often come from different backgrounds given they are more universal players from all over the world, this has molded a different culture which I don't think will mesh well with the frat boy culture of Xbox that's mostly U.S. gamers.

All the haters trying to bash MS for this are clowns. This needs to happen people. Consoles are multimedia machines now. Games are now installed and played from the hard drive exclusively, most are connected to the internet 24/7, apps are used (netflix, twitch, etc.).

You now what other machines do that......PCs. All PCs from around the world have different hardware but they all play together on the same servers regardless of that fact. Xbox and PS need to open up their network and let everyone connect and play games with each other. But I do think that the option should always be there to only play with console players if you choose because advantages exist for PC players in regards to the mouse & keyboard control. Not to mention that console players would now be exposed to multiplayer hacks that exist on the PC side. This should be our choice to make and not MS or PS.

@Kilikan5670: that is literally what msft is saying. Not play a game on psn servers, or EA servers, but play them on xbl and have everybody go to xbl servers to play together.

Right now it is open, either psn servers or w/e server the dev/publishers wants. Multiplat games in pur past could have all been cross play, except for msft who would raise a big stink about it and say "nope, if you publish to our platforms we cannot play with sony or nintendo, and if you cross play with them and not us, you cant publish here". (With rare, after the fact exceptions..).

Now.. if MSFT says sure, let's play on psyonix servers together with pc abd ps... what will that cost? What possible weaknesses could that introduce to other networks and would the others agree to that risk? Again, this was offered to msft freely in 2002, they said no and now they are saying OK, but only in our house...

Seriously, Microsft really deserves this bad press. I wonder if they really have a marketing and PR department that actually finish their first 101 course.

They started with their terrible E3 back in 2013, then they fixed things by giving the xbox new exclusive IPs, new games for their stablished fanchises, features like BC, and optional hardware like the elite controller.....just to blow it up once again with P Spencer opening his mouth and spewing non-sense allover the place without being 100% clear of what they really want to do.

Now the gaming media are running with Spencer's unclear words and making it look like a big deal. At this very moment the best PR person for Sony is Phil Spencer lol

@noctisumbra: My bad, Spencer did not know of this policy by MS to open up Cross-Platform play.

The Xbox will not gain more love or hate of what already has. There is no need to announce something that you clearly have no control over it. It is up to the developers and Sony. In fact Sony di not even confirm or deny that they will allow it which is the smart thing to do. MS should have just let the developers know that they are free to implement it and move on. No meed to announce it like it is a big thing.

@BLAS1AN: I am not criticizing the feature itself. I actually do not care much for it.

My criticism if pretty much on the way P Spencer's division has conducted its recent news. The XB1 will not sell more or less because of this feature that they have no control since it will depend on the developers and Sony. It only provides fuel for the gaming media to make it look like MS is begging Sony for sympathy.

@rosinmonkekyx17: but it is.. developers lack freedom, as do the users. When a developer makes something, a dlc and wants to give it to their customers msft says "hold on now, we can monitize this" and they will charge as they see fit regardless of the developer's intent. Something that would have been free is 3.99....this is but one of a few issues with operating on xbl.

Then there is the issues of security and performance, in which the xbl network has been failing despite nearly a decade of mandated revenue into the network.

To demand that everybody be subjected to msft's network, poor performance, draconic policies is nothing short of tyranny. Giving msft control of that would be like making Trump President.... it surely won't go well for anybody but him (msft).
