Sony Responds to Microsoft's Invite to Connect Xbox One and PS4 Networks

PSN custodian doesn't directly acknowledge Microsoft’s open invitation, but suggests it is open-minded to partnerships.

Sony has issued an encouraging but indecisive response to Microsoft’s invitation to unite the online networks of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One within certain games.

On Monday Microsoft publicly invited other platform holders to allow the same games to be played online across different console networks. Such an unprecedented move, if enacted, could bring an end to more than a decade of segregation between the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Sony Responds to Microsoft’s Invite to Connect Xbox One and PS4 Networks

Sony’s response, issued one day later to GameSpot, suggests the market-leading platform holder remains open-minded about cross-console play but stopped short of discussing a deal with Xbox Live.

"PlayStation has been supporting cross-platform play between PC on several software titles starting with Final Fantasy 11 on PS2 and PC back in 2002,” reads the statement from the corporation.

“We would be happy to have the conversation with any publishers or developers who are interested in cross platform play."

Sony's response was to a direct question about whether it would be interested in working with Microsoft.

It is unclear how to read into Sony’s decision to avoid mentioning other console platform holders in its statement, whether that means it is still evaluating its options or is outright against such plans. GameSpot has contacted the corporation for further clarification.

On Monday Microsoft made the eye-catching announcement that it will support cross-platform play between Xbox One, Windows 10, and other "online multiplayer networks." The move effectively opens the Xbox Live platform so that it can accommodate players on other game networks.

The first Xbox One game announced to take advantage of this cross-platform connectivity will be Rocket League, which will soon allow Xbox One and PC customers to play against each other online.

Such a feature is already present in the PS4 version, which has always allowed PSN players to set up matches with players on Steam.

But Microsoft has indicated that it now wants to bridge the gap between its console and Sony’s, and went as far as saying the ground-work had been complete. On Monday its indie developer director Chris Charla said:

"In addition to natively supporting cross-platform play between Xbox One and Windows 10 games that use Xbox Live, we're enabling developers to support cross-network play as well.

"This means players on Xbox One and Windows 10 using Xbox Live will be able to play with players on different online multiplayer networks--including other consoles and PC networks."

I'll believe it when I see it. The cross-platform play between PC and PS4 on Rocket League was a bunch of hooey. I'll gladly eat my cookies when I see a good quality game utilizing seamless cross-platform play and better come with no strings attached. My only concern is really a lack of fluid partying/chat features.

This isn't going to get resolved by each side issuing public statements to gaming sites on the internet. They will get together and come up with a plan of action or they won't. When that happens, then it will be news. Until then, it's just pointless filler.

This is good but I'm still dubious, MS has more to gain from a partnership and Sony more to lose. Could be a sly corporate power play by MS but I hope not!

@7tizz: MS winning over some of the PS console exclusives because of cross-play is definitely a gain.

I don't see a major loss for Sony though, personally.

@7tizz: If MS was able to get games like Final Fantasy XIV over to Xbox One because of this "cross-networking" feature, that would be a console exclusive PS4 game that would be lost, but like I said, losing a console exclusive that's not owned by the platform holder isn't a hugely big deal.

In that situation though, MS gains and Sony loses. A lot of win for MS, but a small loss for Sony.

@7tizz: That's why I said it'd be a big win for Xbox One (or at least the gamers that don't play it on PC or PS4, but want it on Xbox One) and Sony would lose little or nothing out of it.

Some other console exclusives could come over too, but I can't think of anything huge that would be affected (since Rocket League already came over).

@LPDisturbedHU: Since the PS4 is the more popular console, a lot of people would also buy a PS4 so they can play online with their friends. Sony has nothing to gain from this. They would lose sales.

@Zombie8814: I think that you're forgetting that devlopers/publishers have to "ok" the "cross-networking".

Major studios/publishers probably won't allow it because that would lead to people double dipping less in games.

So it really looks like Sony wouldn't lose much, if anything, if they participated.

@LPDisturbedHU: Currently a lot are jumping ship to PS4 because their friends are, with crossplay that advantage evaporates and may reinvigorate MS sales whilst damaging Sony's. Sony don't actually gain much by such a partnership.

Alongside that may be larger, hidden issues which I alluded to with 'power play'. MS is trying to move towards an Apple style ecosystem with 10, the recent flair up about their market etc May just be me being cynical mind you.

@kyelo: Games will only be "cross-network" playable if the developer wants it to be. I can't see too many major franchises doing this (since some people are more than willing to double dip on the same game so they have it on more than one platform).

The only thing I see Sony losing in this scenario is a few console exclusives. Nothing major.

Could it be a power play by MS? It's entirely possible, they are a major business after all.

@kyelo: And this statement is the correct responds.

MS is trying to move everything into Windows 10 by being a close system, similar to Apples ecosystems. MS needs to open windows 10 and not trying to lockdown PC gamers. I been using Windows 10 for a long time, I hardly bitch about it but at the same time, I'm just glad most of there games are coming to PC at the very least.

I don't really like this. Something about it feels less secure and PC players would always have an advantage over console players. I've also have never had a problem finding players on PS4 so this seems like more of a benefit for Xbox One gamers.

@brn-dn: True, PC players would dominate console players; because using a mouse in a shooter game takes no skill whatsoever. With a mouse, a shooter becomes a boring point and click adventure game.

I prefer a shooter to be challenging.

@brn-dn: More benefit for the longevity of games as well IMO; Bad Company 2 is my fav multiplayer FPS of all time but it's almost vacant on the PS3. I'd be great to merge with Live to or even private servers on PC.
