Sony pulls v2.40 firmware, denies full retro-trophy support

[UPDATE] Sony says it is "working diligently to isolate the problem," shoots down reports claiming all past games will get awards; Burnout Paradise first to give trophies retroactively, Uncharted next for prize patch.

As was announced Monday, today saw the launch of the v2.40 firmware update for the PlayStation 3. The long-awaited update--previewed by GameSpot Hardware--adds the ability to access the console's XrossMediaBar (XMB) and use select features from it in-game. (Players can also access other XMB features directly, but will have to quit gameplay.) It also came alongside a slight tweak to the PlayStation Store, which adds list views and caches images, preventing the need to load previously viewed art assets each time one visits the store.

The v2.40 update will also launch the long-awaited trophy system, the PS3's answer to Xbox 360 Achievements. Though every game for Microsoft's console bestows awards, only three already-released first-party PS3 games--PAIN, Warhawk, and Super Stardust HD--will get the feature this week in the form of patches.

Sony also announced this week that a spate of upcoming titles will sport trophies from the get-go, including LittleBigPlanet, MotorStorm Pacific Rift, NBA 09, PixelJunk Eden, Resistance 2, and SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation. Speaking with GameSpot, director of PlayStation Network Eric Lempel also said that eventually, all new releases for the PS3--both first-party and third-party--would have trophies.

However, Sony today refuted a spate of online reports claiming all past, present, and future PS3 games would one day get trophies, dashing hopes that Lair completionists would be rewarded for revisiting their efforts. As Sony previously stated, it is putting the onus onto both third-party publishers and its own internal studios as to whether they want to take the time to add trophies to games already on the market.

While Konami hasn't said whether or not it will add trophies to its multiplatinum Metal Gear Solid 4, Sony today confirmed that a pair of PS3 hits--Electronic Arts' Burnout Paradise and Sony's own Uncharted Drake's Fortune--would soon be patched with their own awards. No date for either update has yet been set, with Sony saying both will get patched "soon."

The official Web site of Burnout Paradise's developer, EA-owned Criterion Games, also revealed the patch will be the first update to retroactively award trophies automatically. "Trophies will be awarded based on your progress in your existing save game," the developer said in a statement. "When the update arrives the trophies you have earned will reflect the progress you've made in the game at that time (so you won't have to replay the game again to earn trophies)."

Speaking to GameSpot last week, Lempel indicated no PS3 games would be awarded trophies retroactively, and no other such patches have been announced. It appears that Criterion was able to include the functionality by planning ahead for trophies' inclusion. "We can reveal that this is why your Burnout Paradise save game has always been locked to your PlayStation Network id--so we could guarantee that when PlayStation Trophies arrived that your save game would reflect your progress," the developer stated.

Unfortunately, it appears as if the v2.40 update wasn't available for long. A rash of complaints on the official PlayStation message boards claim the heavily anticipated update caused many PS3s to lock up when owners attempt to load a game. The problem does not appear to be exclusive to an individual hardware model, as owners of 40GB, 60GB, and 80GB consoles have all reported problems.

Sony did not respond to GameSpot's request for comment, but apparently took action by pulling the update from the PlayStation Network. Following reports from forum-goers, GameSpot attempted to download the v2.40 to a PS3 running v2.36 firmware--only to find the update is no longer available.

[UPDATE] Thursday morning, Sony posted a note on the PlayStation Blog explaining the situation. "We have temporarily taken firmware v2.40 offline," said Sony Computer Entertainment America corporate communications director Patrick Seybold. "We've received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up."

For myself I downloaded V2.40 on Wednesday (being in the UK) and didn't have not ONE problem with the firmware, I still played the games I always play (MGS4, GTA 4, Resistance and GT5P) and to be honest I don't get the whole fuss of the trophy award system. For me it just comes across as "I have a bigger d*** than you" attitude. I had a friend who actually sat in my house taking the p*** out of me because I didn't have any achievements done on Virtual Fighter 5. He actually said "if you don't care for achievements then why have you got your Xbox on-line for Why bother mate". For myself I wouldn't mind seeing something like a Trophy system, however I wont be going mad about it.

Thanks for telling it imperial_agent. But some of us don't like feeding the money whores at Microsoft who made mindless FPS's popular and permanently boosted next-gen titles to $60 each....So you keep sacrificing your latte's, I'll drink water from the tap.

if you're like me and don't mind paying the $4 / month charge for XBL, then stick with that. Seriously, it's the price of a Latte. It's already doing all the things PSN is trying to do but failing. If you want a free service, but is basically of far less quality and content, then go with the PSN. Just telling it like is.

I personally think that PSN is a good online service, and the fact that it's free is helpful, but the 360 has many things going for it: format is widely used, the sheer library of games, achievement system is well implemented, and a bigger marketplace. Until PSN can cover those bases, I will stick to my 360.

nintendokid said "He knows not to complain about something he gets for free even though it sucks." If it sucks I'd be paying to play XBL still. I'm not anymore, because Sony offers a comparable service free of charge. I think if more people had the opportunity to try both services out, which thankfully I've been lucky enough to do, they would question themselves what exactly they're paying for, just like I did.

I'd just like to add to what Kikook was saying. N3ck doesn't think that the PS3 can handle the competition but it seems to be doing just fine. The PS3 hit the 13 million mark in far less time than it took the 360, with a higher price point and much stiffer competition than the 360 had. Secondly, when you look at the speed with which games have been released, and the quality of the titles released on Metacritic it also shows the PS3 has been doing as well as the 360 did in this respect. So how is the PS3 having trouble? Unless you think consider the 360's first year and a half a dismal failure, you really can't point to the PS3 and say the same thing. And really, what does it matter who sells the most? The Gamecube came in last place the previous gen but was by no means a failure, and some of the best titles last gen came out for it. The gaming business is easily big enough to support all three current gen consoles and this seems fairly evident by the amazing growth the industry is still experiencing. My advice is to try not to focus so much on what the other guys are doing and just enjoy your console of choice. I don't understand why people post bashing others consoles. Does the Wii's extraordinary success stop you from enjoying the great library on the 360? Or the PS3? Of course not. If you have an opinion or a console preference, fine, but at least try to stay rational and debate like a true gamer who loves his hobby. Take a look at DiscGuru101's last post as and example of a post that could have used a little more thought. He's not happy with Sony, I have no problem with that, but every point he makes can easily be disputed. The price point of the PS3 doesn't seem to have hurt sales and people want the tech that makes the PS3 more expensive. That's not an issue. Delays happen to everyone, everywhere and don't hit the PS3 anymore frequently than the Wii or the 360. The PS3 has had a couple of misfires with exclusives, but again, this happens to everyone. Even a cursory glance at metacritc shows that the quality of PS3 games is there, despite a few average titles. Identity issues? The Sixaxis was in development at the same time as the Wii-mote, and motion sensing isn't a new idea, and trophies? You think Microsoft came up with the idea of adding points to games, or rewards for specific objectives? The only point I will concede to you is Sony had made some pretty bold claims but again, this isn't isolated to just Sony in the industry. Seriously, had you given any rational thought to the issues you bring up you probably wouldn't have even bothered posting your last message, because every single complaint you have can be dispelled with a healthy dose of reality. Let's all try to focus on actual game issues, and not emotionally charged tirades over make believe issues.

Wow, just chill out guys. This mishap is not going to ruin your life, just have a little patience and faith. The situation has been exaggerated enough by reading through most of these comments, seems people have already assumed the worst about sony. This article might as well be renamed 'OMG SONY U SUCK GO DIE'.. Grow up.

n3ck you are soooo wrong in many ways. First off Ps3's been outselling the 360 for almost a year now. Sony makes more money than microsoft off games, Sony exclusives are always better than 360's, and this is the only wide spread problem for the Ps3 thats happen so be quiet.

Ok, so my PS3 was an excellent console last week and now, a week later an update has been delayed and.....AND..... oh, it's still the same excellent, reliable console. Seriously, this adds new things to the PS3, which is nice, but I'm still having a blast even without trophy support, xmb and whatever else. The games I'm currently playing the most (COD4, MGS4, GTA4) don't even support these new features and, quite frankly, I could care less because these games ...rock as is. My 360 will probably still be collecting dust until Fable 2 and Gears 2 come out. (actually, come to think of it I'm looking forward to trophies just as an excuse to play Uncharted again. So many games, so little time...)

has any one noticed that the update STILL does not allow private chat? In game messaging is cool but it's annoying to have to always pause the game to respond. Private chat is best because you have a static line of communication so a gamer can play through a game whilst chatting with a friend. Or, as I do with XB Live, use private chat to avoid speaking with pre-pubescent, spawn camping, under developed brain having kids. Update is ok but nothing I haven't experienced with my 360 for the past couple years. On a side note: I finally got a decent surround sound system w/receiver and connected all my devices (360/ps3/zune dock/ dvr). The point is blu-ray discs on the ps3 sound way better and actually matches the picture quality. Thank you Best Buy credit card!

Sony is doing a good job trying to meet the consumers' need and expectations. Everything is a work in progress. They put too much thought designing the PS3 hardware but at least they are noticing that and are trying to focus on the system software. I wouldn't count Sony out yet. I still love the capabilities and interface of my PS3 besides the PSN. XBOX Live is good because its Microsoft, a multi-billion dollar software company but their hardware sux lol. I didn't care about the trophies anyway. Even when i played 360 i didn' t care about the Achievements. Nothing to stress about all this can be fixed. I JUST WANT MORE GREAT GAMES! =]

by trying to meet up with the competition sony is making the PS3 less and less unique...sure the trophy idea is a great start with making the PSN more interactive while playing games...however, something is missing, i'm not sure what...but it just is... hopefully when the firmware and the remaining games + coming up titles are allowed to earn trophies then certain features will be more interactive...for instance the PSN :P

Sanguis_Malus: "If they are going to do the trophies system then they need to inject more enthusiasm into it..." It's a little hard to be enthusiastic when your whole neighborhood always uses your living room to watch TV but never pays you, wouldn't you say? You get what you pay for. That's what has been said all along.

I managed to download the update, and nothing went wrong for me. But I didn't manage to download 4.00 (Which they took down due to Sony pulling 2.4)rophy support for that game, and I was wondering does anyone know any time-frame until the update will be back up?

I was wondering about the retroactive trophies. At least Burnout is taking the right approach. Its going to suck if you have to play through an entire game again just to get the trophies. Hopefully more games will take "The Burnout Approach." I know some people dont care about the trophy system at all, but I do. I always thought the 360 achievements were a good idea.

Curious? Why are people saying this is "A first shot for Sony, so of course there will be problems"? Hasnt Sony released firmware updates before? Just because they add some features, I dont see how that makes it "ok" to brick consoles through a firmware update - when they have done them before, new features included or not. Sorry if I dont see that excuse as plausible. They need to quit spreading themselves so thin trying to make up for all that they didnt plan for - and start testing things more thoroughly before releasing it. If I end up getting a PS3, the LAST thing I would want would be to see Sony screw it up by trying to play catch up and end up tripping over their own shoelaces.

@Sammojo & jackrocks123: The PS3 has been flooded by software/hardware delays (DS3), hyped up claims (4D), overpricing, disastrous exclusives (Lair/Haze), and identity issues(6-Axis/Trophies). For me, it is trying too hard, and delivering too little.

Yup, it's now official, the PS3 must be a piece of trash. Or maybe it's just a mistake. You know, those things we all make quite often. The update got released a bit premature, big whoop. The 360 has had quite a few hardware issues. Oh well, it's irritating to have to wait for your console to get repaired, but at least they've made the process as painless as possible. Sony did the right thing by pulling the update and acknowledging the problem. Can we all just get down from out high horses for a minute and realize that we are all gamers here and interested in games above all else?
