Sony pulls v2.40 firmware, denies full retro-trophy support

[UPDATE] Sony says it is "working diligently to isolate the problem," shoots down reports claiming all past games will get awards; Burnout Paradise first to give trophies retroactively, Uncharted next for prize patch.

As was announced Monday, today saw the launch of the v2.40 firmware update for the PlayStation 3. The long-awaited update--previewed by GameSpot Hardware--adds the ability to access the console's XrossMediaBar (XMB) and use select features from it in-game. (Players can also access other XMB features directly, but will have to quit gameplay.) It also came alongside a slight tweak to the PlayStation Store, which adds list views and caches images, preventing the need to load previously viewed art assets each time one visits the store.

The v2.40 update will also launch the long-awaited trophy system, the PS3's answer to Xbox 360 Achievements. Though every game for Microsoft's console bestows awards, only three already-released first-party PS3 games--PAIN, Warhawk, and Super Stardust HD--will get the feature this week in the form of patches.

Sony also announced this week that a spate of upcoming titles will sport trophies from the get-go, including LittleBigPlanet, MotorStorm Pacific Rift, NBA 09, PixelJunk Eden, Resistance 2, and SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation. Speaking with GameSpot, director of PlayStation Network Eric Lempel also said that eventually, all new releases for the PS3--both first-party and third-party--would have trophies.

However, Sony today refuted a spate of online reports claiming all past, present, and future PS3 games would one day get trophies, dashing hopes that Lair completionists would be rewarded for revisiting their efforts. As Sony previously stated, it is putting the onus onto both third-party publishers and its own internal studios as to whether they want to take the time to add trophies to games already on the market.

While Konami hasn't said whether or not it will add trophies to its multiplatinum Metal Gear Solid 4, Sony today confirmed that a pair of PS3 hits--Electronic Arts' Burnout Paradise and Sony's own Uncharted Drake's Fortune--would soon be patched with their own awards. No date for either update has yet been set, with Sony saying both will get patched "soon."

The official Web site of Burnout Paradise's developer, EA-owned Criterion Games, also revealed the patch will be the first update to retroactively award trophies automatically. "Trophies will be awarded based on your progress in your existing save game," the developer said in a statement. "When the update arrives the trophies you have earned will reflect the progress you've made in the game at that time (so you won't have to replay the game again to earn trophies)."

Speaking to GameSpot last week, Lempel indicated no PS3 games would be awarded trophies retroactively, and no other such patches have been announced. It appears that Criterion was able to include the functionality by planning ahead for trophies' inclusion. "We can reveal that this is why your Burnout Paradise save game has always been locked to your PlayStation Network id--so we could guarantee that when PlayStation Trophies arrived that your save game would reflect your progress," the developer stated.

Unfortunately, it appears as if the v2.40 update wasn't available for long. A rash of complaints on the official PlayStation message boards claim the heavily anticipated update caused many PS3s to lock up when owners attempt to load a game. The problem does not appear to be exclusive to an individual hardware model, as owners of 40GB, 60GB, and 80GB consoles have all reported problems.

Sony did not respond to GameSpot's request for comment, but apparently took action by pulling the update from the PlayStation Network. Following reports from forum-goers, GameSpot attempted to download the v2.40 to a PS3 running v2.36 firmware--only to find the update is no longer available.

[UPDATE] Thursday morning, Sony posted a note on the PlayStation Blog explaining the situation. "We have temporarily taken firmware v2.40 offline," said Sony Computer Entertainment America corporate communications director Patrick Seybold. "We've received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up."

@ mosesdg2001. Ah, you see, there was my problem when I had XBL. I didn't care about any of those things, not one. I still only know one other person with a 360, and he doesn't game online so I could never be bothered with chat, messages, etc and I hardly have time to play the games I own, let alone demos. In 6 years of using X-box live with the Xbox and now the 360 I've never downloaded a single demo. All I want to do is to be able to play online. One system does a fantastic job for free, one does a fantastic job and charges me for it. Really wasn't that tough to make that decision. As for the points card thing, is that really an issue? Aren't there Visa cards you can load up with cash and use just like a credit card? Anyway, GTA4 is calling. Cheers!

@ mosesdg2001 I will agree with you that microsoft's online plan is really really good. I own a ps3 (for the games). I never really got a full look at Live until a friend brought it over and he hooked it up to my internet to download an old castlevania game. We browsed through the whole thing and I was quite impressed with what microsoft has done. They really want to do well in the generation and they almost deserve it. I just don't really see the need for my game console to be able to download tv shows or movies. I have been playing games for pretty much my whole life and all I want to do is play games. I am really happy with my ps3. I was looking forward to this patch and just heard on xplay that it will prolly come out again this week as 2.41 or 2.42. I only really wanted it so I could put my own music in a game. I also like how mosesdg2001 says he only uses his ps3 for blu ray like he is ashamed of it. I bet he does play it, he just had to jump on the 360 bandwagon kinda.

Well, since it's the HDDs that the firmware ruins, I wonder what Sony intends on doing to replace the ruined systems. I've heard they make people send their entire PS3 back, instead of just the HDDs. I have a 60GB and I'd be damned if they'd swapped the entire console for a new 80GB with no emotion chip. If you're effected, be careful when dealing with Sony. I heard some people fixed this by installing a new HDD. Not a bad time to go out and buy a 1 terabyte HDD.

Again, plenty of one shot comments that add nothing to the conversation. n3ck said "Sony need to Fix up, there online service is PAINFUL." Really? How so? I have some reason's for you darkride66, and no I am not a fanboy just wanted to lay down the differences in why xbl is better so here it goes. 1. Easier friend nav 2. Don't have to sit in dashboard to chat with a friend 3. You can send messages and txt while in different games 4. More demos, trailers, video game trailers, music vids as well (don't really care for that one though!)..oh and actual movies and shows to download. 5. Points card no need for credit card and sony is a little slow on picking that up but they are doing that soon. 6. You can see what your friend is playing and who is friends with them I could go on and on but you get the just. Hey this is just my thoughts and I'm not hating sony, I own one (for the blu-ray) but none the less I bought one so there are a few reasons why i pay for xbl once a year. Sony is free which is great but you are getting what you pay for which is nothing. Sony has great plans for its network but all they are, are plans. We will all just have to wait and see. If they do come through on they're promises then I will be looking forward to turning on my ps3 other than watching blu-ray movies.

What happened to just playing good games on a system. That's all gamers really want. Achievements/trophies, Live, Home, DL content, updates, gamer tags, music, movies, Blu-Ray,CDs, DVD's , this, that and more and more and more and more........enough already. The more they keep adding to these systems the more can go wrong.

I got the update and everything is working fine...I'm disappointed though that in-game music won't work for every game...because it's the choice of devs whether they take it or not...but for the friend list...it's completely amazing !!! I don't have to leave GTA 4 and Rock Band when someone leaves me a message! Geez, you'd think that with all the PS3's power and awesomeness it'd be able to do a simple task like that o_o;

"While it's cool, is it that vital to have an in-game XMB?" Well, speaking as an Xbox 360 player, it IS that vital to be able to access the Xbox 360 Dashboard in-game, so I'm going to guess that an in-game XMB is that vital.

Can Sony at least post a progress or something about the problem. not like what they are doing right now ( not saying anything about what the problem might be or anything) or why not release the update little by little like. one update only for the clock to show on XMB (update 2.4) then the update to play your music during game play (2.5) then by pressing "PS' button opens up the XMB (2.6) and the in game chat without being on the same game (2.7). then the trophy update (2.8 or 2.10) i mean it sounds like a good idea so. if one update messes up or do somethign to the PS3 the can fix only that update version, and not hold back the rest. ( for sure the time clock in the XMB is not the problem for the mess up of the PS3s.)

I downloaded the update with no problems last week. Seems to work pretty well. For those screaming that fanboys are ruining this post...I have both, and way prefer the 360...when it works. Live is better for so many little reasons. Games update and install automatically, social networking is integrated and works better, friend invites and management is superb. 2.4 is a great start, though. Having XMB access during gameplay helps. The trophies idea seems cool enough, but like some other promised features, it feels like its too late to the party. I only have a few games, so for now, trophies means nothing to me. The PS3 is a quality system, but in many ways feels like it relies too much on multimedia and too little on gaming.

TUNEwon My god I hate you people, this is a thread for ps3 owners with issues with the new update, which seems to me to be only a few. I don't care how much you kids love your 360's. Want to buy mine? It's not my favorite game system, but who cares? The average age of a gamer these days is somewhere around 28? So I think kids under 21 should be banded from posting until they grow up. Go hangout at a McDonalds parking lot or something.))) lol exactly, fanboys seem to have a brain of a 4 year old, and thats being nice.

@ Yuck_too. Anti-Sony. Not Anti-PS3, anti-Sony. I know from our past conversations that you have a general dislike for Sony and their practices and it certainly comes through on your postings. My 360 has been problematic but other than my hardware issues and personal dislike for XBL, I love the games on the 360! Fable 2 and Gears 2 are the two games I'm most looking forward to this year (Fallout 3 is right up there as well). You'll certainly never find me critical of the games on the 360. You said "we both know you think about and phrase your comments very specifically to both avoid moderation and incite fanboy arguments." Ug. If only this were true. I'm modded all the time and I am staring down a permanent ban on this site, which saddens me as I've been using Gamespot for almost a decade and have been actively participating with the community for 2 years now. I see you have the same problem that I do, people going back over months of postings and searching for every time you were off topic, everytime you may be coming close to the line. In my case I don't think I'll be around much longer, with the seemingly arbitrary way they throw the "trolling" label around here. My intent is not to incite fanboy flames. When I checked that old article regarding 360 bricking it was just out of curiousity and I was just relating what I saw. I certainly don't believe the 360's update bricked half of consoles, I'd be surprised if it was more than a few hundred. Personally I never had a bad 360 update. I'll freely admit that I specifically word my posts to stir things up, but not to incite fanboy flames but rather to encourage debate among gamers and to try to open people up to alternate viewpoints. I've had some pretty satisfying exchanges over the last couple of years and have changed my own opinions a few times after these exchanges. The problem is that others mistake this seed of discourse that I try to sow as nothing more than fuel for their fanboy ravings. That is an unfortunate side effect of trying to introduce new or contrary ideas to these forums as a means of stimulating debate. Even though I'll probably be booted from the site shortly for some post I made weeks ago, I've truly enjoyed posting here and interacting with others in the gaming community. I'm currently in talks with a web-designer I know to start a new news site where I'll attempt to create a forum that limits the fanboy influence but in doing research on other sites I'm already worried that this may be a losing prospect. I guess we'll see, depending on my own personal time constraints and money involved.

I got the update since July 1st 10pm pacific and I still have not had any problems. The only item I was looking forward to was in game xmb. Don't need a trophy system to tell me I play my games to death and have the music turned off during gameplay. Sucks for the people that got the issues and I hope Sony fixes them soon and it also sucks for the people that wanted to use the trophy/ custom track for their existing games.

--darkride66 -- That's funny, show me where I have ever once posted anything anti-PS3. You on the other hand post every chance you get about how your 360 is the biggest disappointment in life. Feel free to rant on though...as others have said this topic is dead. Edit: " I'd appreciate in the future if you would refrain from trying to spin my comments into something that was clearly not intended." ~~~ You're not dumb, we both know you think about and phrase your comments very specifically to both avoid moderation and incite fanboy arguments. When you say "I did see was a pretty even mix between people frustrated because they fell victim to this update that bricked their systems vs people who had no problem" you do so to imply exactly that as intended.

Yuck_too said "That time you said majority of PS3 owners are supportive of multi-platform games and 360 owners are not. When in fact, it's almost always the exact opposite." I said no such thing. The issue was with regards to Bioshock. The claim was PS3 owners flooded news threads regarding Bioshock and bashed the game, now they love the game because it was coming to the PS3. When looking at old articles related to Bioshock I did not observe this behavior. If you like, go check yourself. The majority of posts were positive related to Bioshock, although it's hard to say if they were PS3/360/or just games fans. The few negative comments usually came from people who thought Halo 3 was a much better game. Look it up yourself. As for the old article regarding the 360's problem my comments were a generalization from a brief review of the forum posts and my intent was obviously not to imply that 1/2 of 360 owners consoles were bricked vs the Sony update where no one was affected. Clearly I did not state that no one had issues with the Sony update. If there wasn't a problem they wouldn't have pulled it. I simply correctly pointed out that people on this specific thread aren't reporting this problem. In response to your post claiming a double standard of people who thought Sony bricking updates were ok vs MS bricking updates which were not ok I simply had a look at the old news item for contrast, something which anyone is free to do. At that time the fall 360 update was bricking 360 consoles the PS3 hadn't been released yet and the forums are generally devoid of Sony fans, so this gave us an interesting view of forum life prior to the heated console wars of this gen. Please stop trying to spin me like some crazed fanboy. I'm a fan of my 360 just as I'm a fan of my PS3. I was simply making an observation. Given your historic and almost fanatic anti-Sony postings I'm surprised you would choose to target me when I'm at least attempting to balance my opinions with reality. I'd appreciate in the future if you would refrain from trying to spin my comments into something that was clearly not intended.

Good grief. Are people still fighting over which console is best? Some folk get angry over the stupidest things. This is just a simple story about a firmware update gone sour, which Sony then swiftly reacted to. Nothing more. Nothing less.

"Yuck_Too What I know for absolute certain...decent Q.A. seems to be a thing of the past." Yeah, you got that right for sure. Even the RROD. They did their testing in well cooled rooms with proper airflow. They gave the average consumers too much credit for understand electronics. They didn't test with the 360s crammed into entertainment centers with poor ventilation, etc... Most consumers aren't aware that you just can't do that... They like the way the entertainment system looks with stuff in it. They also didn't take into account the temperature that people keep their homes at. You take people that keep their homes at 70 degree F and then you have people that keep their homes at 80 degrees F. That's a huge difference when it comes to electronics. Like I said though the average consumers doesn't understand that part of it all. Overheating is the #1 cause of electronic failures. If you drive your car by flooring it every where you go... you certainly limit the life of the vehicle. Proper care must be taken with electronics. Still, some electronics just are faulty from the start. Keep all that in mind folks when you have a piece of electronic equipment go bad.

@jerry_todd Very nice post. And it's ok for people to have a favorite too, just don't get so irriated by what a fanboy says that you start being extremely biased and over exagerate the facts and thus become a fanboy yourself. I've been drug down to that level a few times in the past, and I am not proud of it. Let this thread die already folks. The issue happened, Sony will correct it. We don't know how long it will take, but it'll be corrected. No biggy. EVEN if it bricked a system who cares? As long as the system is replaced. No problem. All electronic equipment breaks, and some doesn't even work out of the box. I forgot what the consumer reports numbers are, but HDTVS and all that stuff has about a 15% failure rate within the first year. Stop acting like consoles are made of magical parts and don't break too because of some brand name on the outside.

@ jerry_todd. It's good that it happened right away for you, that way you won't lose any saved games or anything. If you haven't returned this to the store yet I read the problem is easily fixed by reformatting the harddrive and just installing the 2.36 update. I'm sure you'll be able find instructions on the net on how to this with little trouble. Be thankful you haven't had to suffer through 4 360 consoles like I had to. Two rrod's before they extended their warranty from 90 days to a year, and then from 1 year to 3 and one refurbed warranty replacement that scratched 3 of my games into nothingness before I figured out what was going on (and then MS didn't want to take it back because "disc scratching consoles" aren't covered under their normal warranty, only rrod). Twice I had to cough up $170 for repairs, and both times I had to fight with them to get that money back when they extended their warranty. Ug. What a nightmare.

I don't know about who's bashing who's system but Sony and MS have issues. I recently received (gift) a PS3 and waited for my accessories to come (purchased online) in before I hooked it up. When they did, it happened to be the same day v2.4 was available...it bricked the system, corrupted the accessory connectivity, and wouldn't let me on the internet. Needless to say I was very unhappy. After hearing about the problems with the 360 (which I have) I just knew I wouldn't have this with the ps3. I'm glad it was within the 30 day store warranty cause I'd have to send it in without playing a single game. Both systems are great but they both aren't without their faults.

Yuck_Too said "lol...so many posters here slammed MS as being totally unacceptable when it had these exact same kind of issues....That's how you spot a fanboy...the double standards." Just out of curiosity, I went back and had a read through some of the posts when the 360 had it's fall update that was bricking everyone's systems. This was before the PS3 had been released, so there were no PS3 fanboys bashing the 360. What I did see was a pretty even mix between people frustrated because they fell victim to this update that bricked their systems vs people who had no problem. I don't see anyone on this thread who has actually had any problems with the Sony update. I agree a double standard would indicate you were dealing with a fanboy, but it would be hard to spot such a contradiction in this case because, at the time, there were no PS3 fanboys to compare and contrast. Edit: When I wrote this I was only aware of the one fall update on the 360 that had problems. If there were any other 360 updates that bricked systems on a large enough scale to be commented on, I'm unaware of them and did not factor that in.

brettak81 said "who cares as long as the system turns on and plays my damn games." Here here! I didn't have these features last week, or the past year for that matter and it hasn't hampered my enjoyment of the games I have on the PS3. Really, I could care less if they ever added these features. It's all just gravy at this point.

Go hangout at a McDonalds parking lot or something. Now this is a statement I can really relate too. seeing that the facts support your claim on age for Xbox 360 owners seems to be teenagers. I also agree that this was a story on the PS3 with no mention of the 360 in text or context. So I like you ask the question. How does an article talking about the update 2.4 turn into a thread on who's console is better. It gets really depressing to come into an article and read comments that don't even relate to an article. I also have a 360 and if it is so important to some i will also put it up for sale to anyone that feels they must have it. Now back to topic I was out of town when the 2.4 update was online for download so I was unable to download it. I am how ever very eager to see it fixed and back online for download. I really respect Sony for listening to it's consumers and making this update for those that requested it and thier commentment on making the ps3 more enojoyable for all gamers. I also can understand why some developers wont make a patch for games already out. 1 it cost money to make changes.2 most have sent the teams to other projects ,so they are unable to make the code. 3 making a patch isnt a quick thing. It would have been nice, but i understand why some won't and unlike others i respect that.

"Yuck_Too That's how you spot a fanboy...the double standards." I agree that's one way. The other is when they make wildly false claims. This thread started out pretty good for those of us that posted in it orignally. It's clear that the fanboys from both sides are now just blabbering on and on. And we had a great week of posting last week, now this garbage. Bah.

I downloaded the firmware the morning it came out and have had no major problems, although the only games I've played since I downloaded the update were Uncharted and GT5P. Its a possibility that the lock-ups occur with certain games. I do notice that it takes a bit longer to load saved games from the hard drive at times, but I've never noticed any freezing. As far as the update itself goes, its nice to see some improvement and the trophy updates have some potential, but PSN has a ways a to go before matching what's offered over Xbox live. It's good that you can finally check messages while playing a game, and the invitation feature is a must.....but I'd still like to see private chatting like they have on xbox live. Better yet, Sony should add private group chatting (which I've always wanted on live). Being able to access the XMB is a big improvement...I only wish you could make changes to the audio and visual settings without having to exit the game or movie you're playing. I'm a big audio/video-phile, and like to make tweaks to my settings to get the best possible audio and video. One of the biggest advantages the PS3 has over the 360 is the breadth of customization options they offer in terms of audio and video...this can help produce a much better looking picture even though the 360 has a more powerful video card, and the addition of high definition audio codecs puts the PS3 a step ahead of the 360 sound-wise. It'd be nice if the XMB were conducive to tweaking those settings in-game or in-movie.
