Sony May Finally Allow PSN Name Changes

Stuck with an embarrassing or outdated PSN ID? You may be able to change it (maybe).

For reasons that remain unclear, Sony has never allowed anyone to change their PSN name. But now, a new survey making the rounds suggests that Sony may finally allow you to.

The website PushSquare has obtained a Sony survey that states that Sony has been "exploring the possibility of adding a feature to PSN that lets users change their ID." According to the survey, players would be able to change their PSN ID "multiple times" for free, though only once every six months. Under the proposed system, if you changed your name and wanted to revert to your original tag, you would have to get in touch with Sony's customer support team.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Sony May Finally Allow PSN Name Changes

The survey, at least the information relayed by PushSquare, does not mention any details about whether or not more name changes would incur a fee, or what that fee would be. By comparison, Microsoft lets you change your Xbox Live Gamertag once for free, while additional changes incur a fee. Given that it has taken Sony so long to finally (maybe) let you change your PSN ID, it's nice that the company is apparently not planning to charge for this service.

Bear in mind that this survey is not binding, as a line states, "We can't be sure whether this feature will be added or not, but we can be sure your opinions on the matter will be heard."

At PlayStation Experience in December, PlayStation boss Shawn Layden said he hopes that by the next PlayStation Experience in 2018, he won't have to answer more questions about PSN name changes. The suggestion here is that the ability to change your PSN name may finally be available by that time; PSX is historically held in December.

Sony's explanation for why you cannot change your PSN name has bounced around a bit over the years. In 2014, Layden explained that it wasn't a technical issue keeping the feature from being implemented, but instead it came down to Sony's efforts to prevent trolling. In 2015, PlayStation's Shuhei Yoshida said Sony's engineers were looking into it but were unsure if it would ever be possible to deliver the feature.

I would prefer the time was invested elsewhere.

@RicanV: such as where exactly? i can't think of any other features they need to implement other than introducing ps1 games for ps4 users. considering it is 4 years into the generation, it looks doubtful, though. they should also release more ps2 classics -- it feels as though sony forgot about that service completely. when was the last ps2 release? lol

@Xristophoros: They could also make all PS2 games playable on the PS4 by default since the console actually has an emulator built in, as has been discovered now that it has been hacked again. But there's no profit in letting you play the old games you still own over allowing you to buy them again from the store. And backwards compatibility is probably still the most requested feature.

@Atzenkiller: the emulator is not 100% compatible. i hear many games don't work... the reason it takes so long for ps2 classics to get released is because of licensing issues. also, they spend time on implementing the trophy information which in my opinion is a crucial feature, otherwise i will just play my games on an original ps2. in this point in time, i highly doubt sony will allow you to have the ability to play your own ps2 discs. they would have done so by now... it would have been nice, though, especially with its upscaling abilities.

@Xristophoros: So you only buy PS2 games for PS4 because they have trophies? Man, that shit sure was a great invention for selling more games. Add a bunch of pictures you have to unlock, many of them in extremely grindy ways, and people will buy the same game all over again.

I for one wouldn't play anything on my old PS2 anymore because all games look like shit on a HDTV. PC emulators are the much better choice for that, if you couldn't care less about trophies.

@Atzenkiller: naw, the trophies is just another feature to entice me, as is the better looking visuals. that said, i have yet to purchase a ps2 classic, though. i have my original hacked ps2 connected to and EDTV, which is a 480P LCD. playing ps2 games on it looks a lot better than it would on a 1080P LCD. colours are a bit washed out but nonetheless that is the best they are going to look without playing on the old tube. wii games look amazing on the EDTV, though, since wii was optimized for 480P signals, whereas the ps2 only operated at 480i for most games.

@Xristophoros: Dude, they look a lot better on an emulator because you can freely choose the resolution and there's other options for improving the graphics as well. It's not as half assed as when Sony releases some PS1 or 2 game on their store.

@7tizz: You would lose all your digital purchases. They are tied to your account and cannot be transferred.

@lion2447: no you wouldnt, if that was the case just make a new name now....if sony implements a name change system they would also set it up so you keep purchases tied to the email used not the name

@banhammer: As the system is currently, you cannot change your name. As such, the only current way to do so is to set up a new account. A new account cannot have access to another account, meaning you would not have access to your digital content while logged into the new account. You would still have access to your previous account, but using it to play digital content would defeat the purpose of opening a new account.

Why Sony hasn't done anything is most likely due to using the PSN ID as the primary key to identify a person. You mention about being tied to an email account, but then you would never be able to change your email. Right now other personal information can be changed because it always related to the PSN ID.

What Sony most likely will do is create a shared ID of the email and the PSN ID, so that the name and email can be changed, just not at the same time. Or, they might create a unique numerical ID which becomes associated with the users account. This number would only be for the purpose of verifying the account.

@lion2447: If this feature is added, then i doubt it. He'll still keep his account and purchases.

@Pupchu: Your exactly right. With the feature added in, you would be able to change you PSN ID without losing all your achivements and digital purchases. This is why so many people, including myself, would like this implemented.

@leblnk: Backwards compatibility for PS1-3 games. And since the PS4 already has a PS2 emulator built in they'd only need to work on the PS3 games, in the same way as MS does.

@Atzenkiller: It does not have one built in, the PS2 to PS4 games have the emulator there in the software...it is not in the hardware/machine. They could have done it like Microsoft did (using the disc as an unlock to download the game w/emulator package) but went with greed instead....more money selling you the same game all over again than allowing you to play your old games (the real reason BC was removed from the PS3, cost reduction minimal and a smoke screen). As long as PSNow exists, you'll never see PS3 compatibility going forward.

@dlCHIEF58: Did I say anywhere that it was a hardware one? There's emulators running PS2 games perfectly fine on PC for some time now and hardware emulation, like they did for the first PS3 models from what I remember, is a waste. My comment was referring to the PS2 emulator hackers found on the PS4 that allows them to run pretty much any PS2 game now. But yeah, the reason why Sony isn't allowing people to play their old games on it is obvious.
