Sony Closing All Its Stores in Canada

Sony will sell and support its products through authorized retailers.

Sony is shutting down all its stores in Canada, the company has announced.

Sony confirmed the news to the CBC News, saying that it will close all its stores in the next six to eight weeks, and that it will redirect all of its business through its national network of Sony retailers, its online stores, and the "Sony-trained Telesales team," which handle sales by phone.

“Our network of Sony authorized retailers offer a full range of Sony products and will be supported by our in-store Merchandisers and Product Trainers on an ongoing basis in order to ensure that our past customers have continued access to knowledgeable Sales consultants who can support their ongoing Sony electronics needs,“ the company said in a statement.

Sony announced the news on the same day that Target announced its shutting down all its stores in Canada as well, two years and more than $1 billion after it first opened in the country. Target said it was "unable to find a realistic scenario that would get Target Canada to profitability until at least 2021."

The PlayStation 4 was the most sold console of 2014 in the US and globally, selling 18.5 million units in the 14 months since its launch, but Sony has had issues with its other divisions. In February 2014 it announced that it's selling off its VAIO PC brand and restructuring its TV business.

"Good sign they can't even afford their own store eh?"

Microsoft undoubtedly could, if they saw a point to having retail stores.

This is only a sign that Sony can't apparently. Which hurt you pretty badly judging by the little tantrum you just threw.

For gaming, I always browsed the Sony store but Gamestop always had a superior selection. For electronics, I found the heat from their commission sales staff a bit too old fashioned. I don't know what their speciality was outside of brand exclusivity, if that limitation can be considered a boon. Great company but poor shop imo.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Everyone shops at Walmart / FutureShop (BestBuy) or Gamestop. Sony's stores charged hundreds of dollars more for their TVs than what you could buy the same TV for at FutureShop.... how did they expect they'd ever be successful that way?

As for Target... I heard selection was limited and prices weren't as good as Walmart....

@whatsazerg That's exactly it. Target was AWFUL here. When they were coming in, people were psyched and then it actually opened, just constantly negative feedback about how their selection is garbage compared to what they have in the States.

And yes, the prices were nothing special. Not sure what they were expecting when there are stores like Walmart that sell cheaper and have more selection. It just blows my mind that they thought it would work. Ya, I feel bad for the employees losing their jobs (however, they are getting continued pay for quite a few weeks after it officially closes) but I am absolutely thrilled that Target lost so much money. I love it when stupidity takes its toll. I'm glad us Canadians showed them we won't tolerate this nonsense.

As for the Sony stores closing.... I can't say I've even seen one here. I had no idea they even existed. I've never heard anyone even talk about one lol.

I am suprised Target has not closed here as well their stores look like a third world country. Wouldnt spend a dime in such a place. It's more ghetto than even walmart. Im guessing welfare checks and food stamps are all that is keeping them in business at this point.

I do business with Target and it's were I pre-order my games from them cause they got really good deals for pre-ordering games, $5 card and it's only a $1 to pre-order. I like shopping there and they have good deals on prices. I'm just glad they are not going anywhere.

They closed in my city several years ago. Now Target is leaving Canada as well. We just got a Target here less than 2 years ago. They say nobody cares about us Canadians. I guess that includes retailers as well.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> OK, same thing happened at Coquitlam Centre. Had a Sony Store and it closed. Then Target recently opened. Now it is going bye-bye too. I rarely went to the Sony Store anyways. Target was a nice addition though and now it is closing. :(

<< LINK REMOVED >> It's just the nature of the markets here: there's actually not a large enough population to support a very large variety of stores and services. With only approx. 35 million citizens, we have to stay lean and mean in a lot of areas.
