Sony announces PlayStation Vita TV

PS Vita TV will stream Vita, PSP, and original PlayStation games to your lounge room television; system can also work with PS4 Remote Play.

As part of its pre-Tokyo Game Show press conference held today, Sony Computer Entertainment Japan Asia has announced a new piece of hardware that will allow owners to play PSP, original PlayStation, and PS Vita games directly on their televisions. The system will also work with PlayStation 4's Remote Play feature.

No Caption Provided

Dubbed PlayStation Vita TV, the Apple TV-style device measures 6.5x10.5cm and connects to the television, with slots for players to insert their PS Vita game cards. The hardware will also beam games remotely to other televisions within the home, as well as work in conjunction with streaming video services such as Hulu.

The device will launch in Japan on November 14 for 9,480 yen (around $95) and will also be available in a bundle that includes a PS Vita TV, a DualShock 3 controller, and an 8GB Vita Memory Card. No worldwide release was confirmed. Check out the official trailer below (via GamesHQMedia).

whoa whoa whoa! Let me get this straight. So this little (and I mean tiny) gizmo will let you stream your PS4 games to it, will let you play your vita games on a TV and also doubles up as a streaming movie box??? What is the point of getting a psvita unless you literally play it on the go?

I was thinking of getting a vita because I work as a doctor in a hospital quite far from my home home and not only that but often times I can have on call shifts that can be very quiet and there are only so many channels in the doctor's mess room. If I had this I could play it on the tv in the mess and also the tv back in my home from home!
I can imagine a lot of people who have a similar situation, students, travelling blue collar workers/salesmen, those with multiple TVs but the one main TV being used by someone else etc etc.
I LOVE this little box!

It will be a limited experience since it will lack the touch controls of the portable device

I got a huge PSP library & I'd love to play Persona 4 Golden on my TV.

Totally sold on this thing.

Hey Nintendo, where is the 2DS player already?

Your going to buy vita games without a vita now.

If that's the case, then yes my math is bad.

This could have a lot of potential teamed with Gaikai, allowing gamers to play PS3 games on it, and probably PS4 streamed games as well.

Just remember that it is a VITA. takes VITA card and memsticks, streams PS4 plays video and music.

It's not "AppleTV" like; it's a VITA with HDMI

@KuchikiSentou but...in the end, it plays netflix and hulu and other bunch of stuff, so it really happens to be very much like an Apple TV, which is pretty darn good for Sony.

Where is the slot for the UMD PSP games? Are those going to have to be repurchased like PS1 games and downloaded to the unit?

@blackace Most likely you'll have to download your (digital) PSP and PS1 games to the Vita Memory Card to play on this new thing.

@blackace Doubt you can run UMDs on this device. Likely only digital PSP games from the memory stick.

@grbolivar Don't forget that the PS4 isn't releasing in Japan until February. Therefore they didn't want to pack in the Dual Shock 4 with the Vita TV package (which releases in November in Japan). When they announce the North American version, I have a feeling it will include the Dual Shock 4.

I wonder how they will handle the whole PS Vita single account thing.

Will this mean that:

Everything that I buy digitally will be playable on the Vita TV?

Will I be able to play multiplayer games, like Dragon's Crown, from my Vita with a friend on the Vita TV?

Also, How will games that require touch be playable with a Dual Shock 3 controller?

Eitehr waym sounds like it could have a lot of potential.

@xaveri All good points. I was wondering about the Vita single account thing, too. Sony's doing a good job of winning me over for next gen but would really like to see them address that.

Right now I can buy a Battlefield or CoD game for iPod / iPhone and share it with about 6 different devices in our household. Can even play multiplayer vs. family members with the single copy.

But no in-family multiplayer with one copy of $50 Vita COD since all Vita systems are currently locked to a single PSN account.

@tjkraz I agree. So far maybe Sony could get away with it because the Vita is not as ubiquitous as say an iPhone or iPad but this new device should work more like a console and allow multiple accounts. Something tells me that it will still be tied to one account. We'll see.

@blackace how/why is this a "gimmick"?

There are quite a few Vita games that I'd prefer to play on a TV. Uncharted: Golden Abyss and Gravity Rush are examples.

These are console-quality, graphically impressive games that shouldn't be confined to the Vita's small screen.

@blackace Agree for the most part. But the "killer app" is being able to Remote Play PS4 on a second TV.

Sony kinda "buried the lead" on this one.

@tjkraz @blackace lol fanboy much? ur being conned. you are buying third rate tech which was out of date 2 years ago. Think of how much its going to hold back the gaming industry. The ps3/360 ruined games for about 5 years, the ps4 will make things worse

@tjkraz @blackace Is that what they were doing with the Knack game? Why would you need to do that though if the PS4 can just hook up to the HDTV itself.

@blackace @tjkraz Yeah, it was the Knack clip. Multi-room setup.

Obviously it will work best in larger households. For instance, if you have the game console in a Family Room or basement, you could put the Vita TV in a teenager's bedroom. When nobody else is using the PS4, he could use Remote Play to play PS4 games. Or just play Vita games installed right on the Vita TV.

as someone who paid around $400 for my Vita in South America, it is really frustrating to see Sony releasing this stuff.

1. Price drop
2. New Vita announced at a cheaper price
and 3. This thing for $100.

Really wish Sony would do some sort of 'You bought it first so here are some cool perks' like Nintendo did with the 3DS.

I might just sell my vita and buy this thing when it's eventually released.

@mtait01 Welcome to the world of technology. No need for the resentment against Sony. All hardware follows the same trends and you as a consumer should be smarter than to think the hardware would remain unchanged for a long period of time (especially since Sony needs to improve sales). The original PSP had the same fate and lets not even get started with the DS/3DS hardware changes over the years.

@mtait01 Sell your Vita now before prices drop because of the new model.

Although the new model will include a LCD display which is inferior to the OLED (maybe to reduce price), just to let you know...

@mtait01 That's the price we early adopters pay. ;)

As for the cheaper Vita, bear in mind it has a poorer quality screen so you're probably better off sticking with what you have now. If portable gaming isn't your thing, by all means sell the Vita for a Vita TV when available.

ok, i just thought of something kind of awesome. put this in my living room and the ps4 in my room, if remote play works as it should, this is going to be awesome.

No more having to carry my big playstation and putting the cables every time i have people over.

If they add local multiplayer to vita games on a big screen, that would be another huge win, but i think that would be too hard.

exactly, so having 2 controllers on the same game would be very different from what the game was developed. maybe in future games.
