Sonic Superstars Players Should Check Out This Brand-New Switch Controller
The Sonic the Hedgehog Split Pad Compact released this month alongside a Pac-Man-themed model.
The Hori Split Pad Compact is one of the best ways to play Switch in handheld mode, thanks to its slim design, programmable rear buttons, and back grips for added comfort. Hori has gradually expanded the Split Pad Compact lineup over the past year, and the latest additions are themed around Sonic the Hedgehog and Pac-Man. Originally slated to launch October 31, both models wound up releasing last week. It's great timing as well, considering Sonic Superstars just launched. Now you can play Sonic's latest side-scrolling adventure with appropriately themed controllers.
Side note: If you'd prefer the Split Pad Pro, which has the same features in a larger form factor, Amazon has a few deals to check out:
- Split Pad Pro (Zelda Edition) -- $53.45 (
$60) - Split Pad Pro (Pikachu & Lucario) -- $54 (
$60) - Split Pad Pro (Black) -- $41 (
$50)
Hori Split Pad Compact (Sonic the Hedgehog Edition)
$60
As you’d expect, the only thing that’s different between this version and the standard version is its artwork. The turbo and programmable buttons are still here, as are the ergonomic back grips and slim form factor. The only thing that’s new is the visual design--which features Sonic, Tails, Amy, and Knuckles on the front and a deep blue on the back. It’s also officially licensed by Sega and Nintendo.
Hori Split Pad Compact (Pac-Man Edition)
$60
It’s a similar story for the Pac-Man edition. The front features a black and yellow design, complete with yellow triggers and analog sticks, along with a depiction of Pac-Man on the right Joy-Con. You’ll also find members of the Ghost Gang scattered across the front of the controller. This edition is officially licensed by Nintendo and Bandai Namco.
“Hori's Split Pad Compact is my new favorite controller for handheld gaming on Nintendo Switch,” wrote critic Steven Petite. “It has everything you could want in a Joy-Con replacement: great sticks, an actual D-pad, ample triggers, remappable back buttons, and, most importantly, truly sublime ergonomics. After spending the past month using the Split Pad Compact almost daily, I can say that I'll never go back to any other handheld-focused controllers or grips I own.”
