The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has surpassed 60 million copies sold since its release in 2011. This makes it the seventh-best-selling game of all time, behind Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which has surpassed 62 million copies sold.

This news comes by way of an IGN interview with Skyrim game director Todd Howard, who mentioned that even 12 years after its release, people are "still playing it." As part of the interview, Howard mentioned that the Bethesda team wants the same long-term appeal with its new RPG, Starfield.

Since its launch in 2011, Skyrim has gone on to become one of the most popular RPGs of all time, releasing across numerous platforms including PS5, Nintendo Switch, and even a version available for Amazon Alexa.

In 2016, Howard confirmed Skyrim had surpassed 30 million copies sold, meaning it has racked up another 30 million since then. Skyrim has now outsold the original Super Mario Bros. (which sits at around 58 million copies sold) and Red Dead Redemption 2 (around 53 million copies sold).

Looking ahead, Bethesda is currently working on Starfield, a space RPG that aims to launch on September 6, 2023. Beyond that, the company is also developing a Skyrim follow-up, The Elder Scrolls VI, though that game likely won't be out any time soon.
