SimCity for Mac launches August 29

City-building game from Electronic Arts and Maxis releasing later this month with cross-platform play.

The Mac version of Maxis' city-building game SimCity will release on August 29, publisher Electronic Arts announced today. The game was originally expected to release on Mac June 11, but was later delayed because it was not "ready for prime-time yet."

No Caption Provided

SimCity for Mac includes cross-platform play, meaning PC and Mac gamers can play together on the same servers. Those who already own SimCity for the PC will receive the Mac version for free (and vice versa).

In addition, gamers can take cities they created on the PC and play them on the Mac by logging in to the same server they originally created the cities on.

According to Maxis, SimCity for the Mac is not a simple port of the Windows version, but rather has been created as a native version optimized for the Mac. Target system specifications for the game are Lion OSX 10.7.5 and a Core 2 processor.

SimCity is not the only high-profile game coming to Mac on August 29. That date also marks the release of BioShock Infinite for Mac.

SimCity launched in March for Windows PCs, and was beset by widespread server woes. Despite its initial struggles, the game has sold over 2 million copies to date.

If you enjoy butting your head against the wall, if you love paying a lot for very little, being restrained when you want to play, being constrained by millions of other strangers on how you play, ignore the existing buyer's remorse and screams and complaints, ignore EA's broken promises and bad PR, go for it, sign up, marry EA.

Otherwise spare yourself the expensive grief and wait for the offline version.

Gimme BIG cities with trains and a monorail and buses, and an underground. Ah to hell with it lets play Sim City Rush Hour. I do not want mining or drilling for oil. That is not city specialization. Mostly I want BIG. But nobody is listening. Nobody ever listens.

Who in their right mind would buy a Mac? Pay more for the same thing. Apple is for hipsters.

What do you call a Mac-user? An i-DIOT.

EA and the by EA corrupted Maxis doing what they're doing best - broadening their potential victim audience to make money off a still broken product that's been confirmet to never be fixed or made playable. (all customer feedback has been and is still being completely ignored and instead of fixing the game they're working on overpriced DLC)

It will be over soon if they can't find enough stupid customers anymore.
At the moment they seem to be targeting the "oh, shiny" MAC crowd because the UI is actually "ok" (and "pretty") and that seems to be their selling point for the MAC version.

When they can't milk that audience anymore either and the flow of money stops, then the servers will be shut down, a stupid excuse will be found and nobody will be able to use their bought product anymore (and developing one last patch to make it playable offline is too "costly") - happened before, will happen again.
Then development on SimCity >insert next version< will start and the cycle of ripping off and disrespecting customers repeats. (if they can still find stupid enough people then)

Anyways, the news that this "SimCity" is entirely broken have been out long enough and I agree with what was said already - If anyone still buys this product despite all the evidence out there, it's hopefully at least a learning experience for that illguided customer.

Macs are dead and pc's are dying. Too bad they don't make it for the PhonyStation 4 or the LOL Vita.

Buyer beware.

Seriously, instead of foisting this mess on a whole new platform, how about fixing the game?

@halBU If SimCity for Mac launches without a hitch or bugs that Windows experienced and still is that would be a slap in the face to me. All the beta testing for the Mac should have been done for Windows as well. Oh well we will find out Aug 29.

@halBU fixing it means rebuild it from scratch. when they were saying that SC is inherently broken its because its problem resembles a person that was born with that extra chromosom that disables him somehow. its uncurable.

Yay! Now more people can play their broken game! Seriously Mac users, steer clear of this one. I desperately wanted to like this game. I accepted the small plot size thinking that I could just play a whole region myself and get the same basic feel of the sprawling city.

But the core design is broken. At a point in every city, no matter what you do, the traffic will disable your town. As there is only one way in and one way out of your city and the design of the game is to keep it this way. There's an occasional plot that has a highway that runs through, but even that will end up broken.

This is not a good product, and adding more servers was the start of fixing the problems, not the end. And patches have done little to help the core broken design. They've put out a few fires, but the inferno rages on. Adding more servers was like using a fire extinguisher on a burning table while ignoring that the walls are also engulfed in flames.

@ZZoMBiE13 There are very few games out there that were as disappointing to me as this SimCity reboot. It's like they took everything fun about the original games and flushed it down the toilet.

Its not just the bugs that ruin this game, it's the entire concept of it.

Look at all the people cheering for this amazing news.

Is it still a "Must be connected," game?

Well Apple users, be prepared not to be able to play it on day one!

This is a good move on their part, seeing that Mac users actually like being screwed by product companies, so they'd probably welcome this game with open arms.
