SimCity and Sims 4 Development Continuing After Shutdown of Maxis Studio

Maxis Emeryville is no more.

The primary Maxis studio in Emeryville, CA--the developer behind games like SimCity, Spore, and the early Sims games--has been shut down, Electronic Arts confirmed today.

The news first came to light when SimCity designer Guillaume Pierre tweeted, "Well it was a fun 12 years, but it's time to turn off the lights and put the key under the door. #RIPMaxisEmeryville."

EA has since confirmed the news with GameSpot, saying in a statement, "Today we are consolidating Maxis IP development to our studios in Redwood Shores, Salt Lake City, Helsinki, and Melbourne locations as we close our Emeryville location. Maxis continues to support and develop new experiences for current Sims and SimCity players, while expanding our franchises to new platforms and developing new cross-platform IP."

According to the publisher, the shutdown will "not impact our plans for The Sims." The first expansion pack for The Sims 4 is still on the way, with "a full slate of additional updates and content in the pipeline."

As for the now out-of-work Maxis employees, EA says they will all "be given opportunities to explore other positions within the Maxis studios and throughout EA. For those that are leaving the company, we are working to ensure the best possible transition with separation packages and career assistance."

2013's SimCity famously required an Internet connection to play when it launched and severely limited the maximum size of cities. The Sims 4, developed in part by Maxis, launched without certain features seen in previous games, prompting worries that they would be added back in the form of paid expansion packs.

Maxis was originally founded in 1987 by Will Wright before being acquired by EA a decade later. It has since expanded to become one of EA's major development labels, with development of The Sims series being spun out to a dedicated division, The Sims Studio.

Bullfrog, Westwood, Pandemic, Criterion and now Maxis. EA and it's never-changing never-aging square of death: acquire, pump, divide and shut-down. smiling executives and pleased investors resting on mountains of cash built upon jobs lost, franchises whored and dreams crushed. So, who's next?!

"Well we only sold millions and millions of games by this studio and they where allround successful....better close it."

-EA

Tho I think some of the people there will be happy to not have to work on the same crap all time time.

And the last of the greats of old hooked by EA has finally fallen to the parasite that latched to it.

Bioware lost that distinction long ago. They're just a cog now. I'll admit they still make some good stuff every now and then, but the magic's long since faded.

Thanks EA, you did it again....the truly sad part is that people are still buying their games.

Question is.... of all the trouble Maxis has had lately in their game design. Was that their doing? Or was that EA's controlling doing? The rule of hierarchy is that the underlings are the ones who pay the price of course. No different than a head coach getting sacked when the GM screwed the roster into the ground.

My guess is.... EA management caused all the trouble with Sim City and Sims 4, and now.... the studio gets shuttered for it. Only those involved will ever know the truth though.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Maxis pretty much had free reign with SimCity. They sold their ideas to EA as being revolutionary. Poor design decisions and loss of connections with the community. Maxis screwed themselves and it is really time to go. New blood, new ideas needed.

<< LINK REMOVED >> The Maxis of old compared to the Maxis of today is vastly different, so Im assuming EA micromanaged the crap out of them and unknowingly stifled alot of creativity and submarined their office culture in an effort to find ways to milk the consumer.

Another once great dev shutdown because EA had their head so far up their own ass. F&$# EA!

Origin, Bullfrog, and westwood are just a few others to meet this fate thanks to EA. Now I wonder how long it will be until we see Bioware end up on this list.

Maxis was a big part of my childhood but I'm glad to see it go. It's another example of a company EA has ruined and then abandoned because it isn't respected any more.

<< LINK REMOVED >> On the bright side, it's far more feasible in today's landscape for those guys to go indie. Maxis can live again, much like Rare is (sort of) alive again in the form of Playtonic.

It has been really sad to watch once great game franchises like the Sims and Sim City be run into the ground by DCL schemes and lackluster support. Spore is one of my favorite games but I only fear a sequel would be a shell of the original. EA was seemingly on a mission to run Maxis into the ground and now the mission is complete. RIP Maxis.

Eh, honestly feels like Maxis has been dead for a long time anyway. Remember when they made other Sim games? Stuff like Sim Copter, Streets of Sim City, Sim Safari, Sim Ant, Sim Tower (ok not made by Maxis), Sim Farm, etc.

I still have fond memories of the original Sims, the realistic tone and classical music was awesome. Never really liked the cartoony design of the sequels.
