SimCity and Sims 4 Development Continuing After Shutdown of Maxis Studio

Maxis Emeryville is no more.

No Caption Provided

The primary Maxis studio in Emeryville, CA--the developer behind games like SimCity, Spore, and the early Sims games--has been shut down, Electronic Arts confirmed today.

The news first came to light when SimCity designer Guillaume Pierre tweeted, "Well it was a fun 12 years, but it's time to turn off the lights and put the key under the door. #RIPMaxisEmeryville."

EA has since confirmed the news with GameSpot, saying in a statement, "Today we are consolidating Maxis IP development to our studios in Redwood Shores, Salt Lake City, Helsinki, and Melbourne locations as we close our Emeryville location. Maxis continues to support and develop new experiences for current Sims and SimCity players, while expanding our franchises to new platforms and developing new cross-platform IP."

According to the publisher, the shutdown will "not impact our plans for The Sims." The first expansion pack for The Sims 4 is still on the way, with "a full slate of additional updates and content in the pipeline."

As for the now out-of-work Maxis employees, EA says they will all "be given opportunities to explore other positions within the Maxis studios and throughout EA. For those that are leaving the company, we are working to ensure the best possible transition with separation packages and career assistance."

2013's SimCity famously required an Internet connection to play when it launched and severely limited the maximum size of cities. The Sims 4, developed in part by Maxis, launched without certain features seen in previous games, prompting worries that they would be added back in the form of paid expansion packs.

Maxis was originally founded in 1987 by Will Wright before being acquired by EA a decade later. It has since expanded to become one of EA's major development labels, with development of The Sims series being spun out to a dedicated division, The Sims Studio.

Doesn't really matter, the same people will just be absorbed into EA. Nothing changes.

So how many is this now?

Westwood

Origin

Bullfrog

Mythic

Many once "great" dev studios bought up by EA and then over time swallowed.

Why does EA do this? It's like they buy a studio and they can NOT keep their "hands" off of it once they buy it, oh they SAY countless times (both EA and the devs at the studio that is bought) "We still will be free to do what we want, EA will be hands off!"

Then slowly EA closes its grip, slight change here, there, the top dev studio people leave (like Bioware most reecntly) and then over time when it does poorly they'll move it in-house, then eventually the name goes away.

I just hope it's a long time before Bioware succumbs to this eventual fate.

RIP Maxis you will be missed, EA this does not go unnoticed by gamers. If we want more talented developers to exist we have to stop feeding these big soulless corporations like EA, Microsoft, Ubisoft and Activision.

Origin (the studio, not the crap Steam wannabe), Maxis, Westwood, BullFrog... next will be Bioware, Mythic, DICE, etc. Mediocrity is the disease. EA is the bacteria that causes it. EA will forever destroy studios and franchises thanks to their ever-increasing army of Harvard MBAs

<< LINK REMOVED >> Hey now, with the exception of their sales not being as good as Steam's, Origins a much better client and their support team actually do help out. Steam has been garbage since day one and most support tickets I create, come back with unhelpful canned responses WEEKS later.

Not to mention day one issues that were never resolved because they had better things to do (like rake in your cash).

Unfortunately the crazy sales have turned you all into sheep, following them to hell and back no matter how bad their service is.

Westwood and C&C. Medal of Honor series. Bullfrog Productions and now Maxis. nearly all of the games and developers EA has purchased have become a pale shell of there former selves or are in the process of becoming so. EA is ruining gaming with the stupid practices and we are losing beloved franchises left and right. if only something could be done to stop them and revive our favorite series under BETTER management.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Something can be done. Just gotta follow where the talent goes (smaller studios or rivals typically) and buy those games. Vote with your wallet and no company can win, as they need dollars from consumers to continue. And of course tell your friends, just a few people not buying DLC map packs doesn't help.

Maxis was amazing during the 90's but after EA bought them, they had only a few good games (SimCity 3000, The Sims). I still wait for a decent successor to SimCopter.

It must be very frustrating for these developers, who I'm sure are very talented, to get instructions from suits upstairs on how to monetize their game. And then when it all blows up, it's them who are kicked out the door. That must be very frustrating.

EA literally exists just to buy up great studios and hollow them out till they're a shell of their former selves, don't see much hope for bioware or popcap RIP.

Just eat 'em up and puke 'em out till nothing is left but recycled Ignite and Frostbite games, right?

So to get things staight, one Maxis studio shut down, but it wasn't the only Maxis studio. There are still other Maxis studios in "Redwood Shores, Salt Lake City, Helsinki, and Melbourne". So do all these studios work together on every project with the Maxis logo on it? How do we know exactly what work this specific Maxis studio did if there's 5 Maxis studios?

<< LINK REMOVED >> This was the original and also primary studio for Maxis, the focal point for development of their IP. Removing this one basically means Maxis is disbanded in all but name the smaller side studios will more than likely be focused on sims & simcity content but it's doubtful that we'll see new IP from them.

I am 100% SURE that the decline of Maxis has NOTHING to do with the fact that sim city and the sims were developed as incomplete games with future expansions and dlc's in mind.

Sarcasm aside, everyone will blame EA but i truly believe that EA isn't solely responsible. Maxis lost it's touch, they had shoddy developers doing a half a'd job. Shame to see em die but maybe someone else will be able to do something with both Sim City and the Sims series.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I'll agree with you as far as Sims 4 and the new Sim City is concerned. However, even if that was the primary reason for the Maxis closure, they made money hand over fist through The Sims 3. The Sims 3 was one of the highest selling PC games of all time. That should've kept the studio going for awhile even if Sim City and Sims 4 didn't do so great.

One thing we can all agree on however is that things tanked awfully quickly after Will Wright left.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I was referring to Sim City and the new Sims game. But look at it objectively

Sim City 4, 2003 release offering minimal or no income in the last decade. Societies and Sim City weren't the cash cows they had hoped they would be.

The Sims 3 was a 2009 release and after 6 years of dlc's the total cost of the whole game became over $400 with no sales, how many new consumers can you attract at a price point of a new console or pc? Which is the reason that they released a new game i think, but they developed the game with DLC's in mind and didn't include core mechanics, same as sim city. As successful as Sims 3 was, it was the start of the end because of the philosophy they adopted during the course of development for that game and it's countless DLC's.

I hope the out of work, workers start making simulation indie games. without the presser of EA telling them what to cut out to the point, that the developers stop caring about the games there making. because they had to answer to EA.

The Sims has so far sold over 125 million units. SimCity sold 1.5mill within the first week.
