Shippin' Out Sept. 12-18: Halo: Reach, PlayStation Move

Release schedule ramps up in a big way with Bungie's final installment in sci-fi shooter series, motion-sensing PS3 add-on, Professor Layton, Lord of the Rings: Aragorn's Quest, and much more.

Last year, Bungie's Halo 3: ODST launched against Cabela's Big Game Hunter 2010 and Scooby Doo First Frights, and still topped the September sales charts handily. This year, the sci-fi shooter series will renew the rivalry, attempting to go two-for-two against adversaries both wild and domesticated by launching day and date with Cabela's North American Adventures and Scooby-Doo and the Spooky Swamp.

Now that's a big-game hunting rifle.
Now that's a big-game hunting rifle.

The last Bungie-developed Halo game before the developer embarks on a 10-year franchise development deal with Activision, Reach serves as a prequel to the first three games in the series. Based in part on events in Eric Nylund's Fall of Reach novel, Halo: Reach tells the story of the attempted defense of the planet by a small group of Spartan soldiers.

Beyond Reach, the week's biggest release isn't a game at all; it's the PlayStation Move accessory. While Sony's launch lineup of Move-compatible games like Sports Champions and Kung Fu Rider is already on store shelves, the motion-sensing Move controller itself won't hit stores until Friday, September 17. Controllers are sold on their own for $50, bundled with the necessary PlayStation Eye camera and Sports Champions for $100, or with all that and a 320GB PlayStation 3 for $400.

Many high-profile Move titles are set for release in the coming weeks, as is the case with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment's PS3 edition of The Lord of the Rings: Aragorn's Quest. However, the Wii, PS2, DS, and PSP versions of the family-friendly movie-based action title will arrive this week. It's a busy time all around for WBIE, as the publisher has another multiplatform movie-based game launching in Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole, as well as the aforementioned Scooby-Doo effort.

The noteworthy new releases don't end there. On Sunday, September 12, Nintendo launches Professor Layton and the Unwound Future for the DS. Like the previous two installments of the series, Unwound Future will see the professor and his young sidekick, Luke, investigate a puzzle-packed mystery. This particular caper begins when Luke receives a letter from his future self and the pair head off to London to see the unveiling of a time machine. Naturally, the presentation goes horribly wrong, and the pair must follow a trail of clues left by Luke's future incarnation to see where it all leads.

For further details on the week's games, visit GameSpot's New Releases page. The full list of downloadable games on the PlayStation Store, Xbox Live Marketplace, and Wii Shop Channel will be revealed later this week. Release dates are based on retailer listings and are subject to change.

monson21502 Posted "@COPMAN221, why you always thinkin nobody trusts you? also HTF did you get reach early too?" monson21502 I've been gaming since the early 70's and I have great hooks with Sony and Microsoft.. I get all my games early and I call it honestly.. Now in a few weeks I will also have the kinect in my home for free and if it good or bad I will call like I see it. Just like I did with the move..

Don't get me wrong, nothing against shooters and reach looks good as far as shooters go, but I hate the double standard shooters get. Go through reviews of any other genre of games and you will see games losing points for no originality or being similar to other games in the genre/series. But shooters, especially series like Halo, CoD, etc churn the same game out again and again and they get these amazing scores. There is a review bias towards the FPS for some reason. The entire genre tends to be moving towards online play with shooter campaigns becoming more and more stripped down, short, and repetitive and yet they never take a substantial hit for that review wise. Shooters, to me, are like Avatar. Everything looks and sounds so wonderful that it doesn't matter to people if there isn't much there. Whereas other games have to do so much more even if the graphics are on par. Again. Not bashing shooters. Just bashing the way they tend to get reviewed nowadays. Online play is great and all but its lazy to me to just rely on online play instead of offering a great single player campaign on top of the online.

@ aGiantSquirrel sure there are some little kids on halo and ive played against some but i hardly ever hear them talk or try to act cool. You are probably referring to the little kids that play on MW2, those kids never shut the hell up and they are constantly complaining and making noise.

A large number of games coming this week, but only Halo Reach and to a lesser extent Professor Layton, Unwound future are notable. I'm kinda surprised that Sony is releasing Move on Friday, I mean wouldn't Saturday or Sunday make more sense for the casual crowd they are trying to get?

Halo has too many little kids playing online. People mention how Xbox live is better because everyone has mics...well, I think that not having mics and not having to either listen to children on Halo or having to mute them every time is a very good thing. When playing a game, I really dont care what people have to say. Silence is golden, especially on Halo with a bunch of little kids trying to swear and act cool.

@Rottenwood As far as money being put into other games they are there but, its not what sells. That is life it is a buisness first. No Money no innovations.

@Rottenwood You spatting about it being nothing new. When Bungie has made on of the best matchmaking systems for most FPS. Not to mention they brought a lot of innovations with bringing film and cameras into the game so you can replay and record share with friends on a console. I mean what more do u want it got one of the better map making tools for a console that is pretty damn good and innovating compared to most FPS on consoles.. Maybe they could of added a bit more to game play but, they have in little spurts. point is if it's not broke don't fix it. It works for Halo fans and people who enjoy it. The fact that you even said it was pushed out by MS was utter BS. As someone has said if you actually new something about Bungie that Halo Reach was Bungies idea not MS. That is not an Opinion that was you basing your opinion on a false statement. The Facts are FPS have not changed much since the old Doom, Wolfenstien days. know why ? Cause it works and is what sells. FACT.

@xboxrulze I don't want you to get the wrong idea... I actually have a had a good time with this conversation all day. I have nothing against you personally and I apologize if I offended you in any way. & yes, my name fits... I have always been hard to disagree with... I state my points in ways that aren't very attractive... but, on the upside: I am honest in my thoughts and I'd like to think the world needs more straight forward people (even if they are a bit blunt). Again, I am sorry if anything I said offended you in any way.

well I've been playing it since 3:00pm today and I must say that I like what I have played so far. Online is what you would expect from the series. I'm not really the greatest fan of their online formula but it's still fun like it's alwayse been. Enforcer 266 if you don't believe me..

@Arrogant_1: I'll give you that my name isn't exactly the most forgiving, however as I've been here since I was 13 or 14 and was in fact heavily on board with Xbox and you aren't allowed to change your name I'm stuck with it. I don't wish to build back all my friends list, earn my soapbox emblem all over, or my video badges, or my top 100 reviewers badge. I have not played the game but you know what the game is offering in terms of content -- read about the game. There is no bias in its features. Also, if you think the hype machine is so huge that the 30+ reviews it's received so far are all skewed then you're delusional. Thank you for your sarcastic attack on my lack of information to back up a fairly obvious statement. I might have a 7 year old user name that makes people automatically assume things, but it looks like yours is far more telling, sir.

@xboxrulze Seeing as Halo: Reach isn't even out yet (unless you have an illegal copy) I don't see how your opinion is much more than empty rhetoric... quality and differentiation in FPS games? Try MWF2 or Mag. I had more fun online with Section 8 than Halo, but that's just me. As to if you are a hype-guy? I think your name says it all, along with your clearly biased opinion (rather than actual experience) of a game you praise that hasn't even been released... till tomorrow. I tried to come on here to state "my" opinion & to hear reasons from players why I should or shouldn't buy/rent Halo: Reach. I don't say a lot too often and have learned today not to speak my mind against a juggernaut game, like Halo, again or any of it's crazy followers. Thank you for your opinion & zero facts to back it up... ; ]
