Shippin' Out May 9-15: Skate 3, Lost Planet 2
EA Sports' latest skateboarding effort joins Capcom's sci-fi shooter, Age of Conan expansion, Batman: Arkham Asylum GOTY edition in stores.
May began with a bang, as millions of Xbox 360 gamers took an advance look at Bungie's Halo: Reach while the PlayStation 3 and PC (finally) got the Stimulus Package add-on for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Into the month's second week, gamers again have a lot to look forward to, thanks in large part to new releases from Electronic Arts and Capcom.
On Tuesday, EA ships the third installment in its pavement-chewing Skate franchise. Skate 3 introduces a new locale--Port Carverton--and emphasizes team-based gameplay in offline modes, as well as online cooperative and competitive bouts. The game features the new Skate School training mode, as well as a Skate Park level editor. Players can even shoot videos and photos of their exploits. A demo for Skate 3 is currently available on the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live.
On Tuesday, Capcom will launch the poorly reviewed Lost Planet 2 on the Xbox 360 and PS3. Set 10 years after the original, the sequel follows the game's protagonist and three non-player characters through six chapters, each of which will have multiple outcomes that hinge on players' actions. Far from the frozen tundra seen in the first Lost Planet, the titular world has seen substantial terraforming that yielded large swaths of lush forest environments. A demo is currently online on Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network.
Funcom's massively multiplayer online role-playing game Age of Conan will receive its first PC expansion this week. Titled Rise of the Godslayer, the add-on introduces the Empire of Khitai, a region with culture and traditions inspired by the Far East.
With a sequel already en route, gamers can re-experience Rocksteady's original highly acclaimed Dark Knight effort on the Xbox 360 and PS3 this week with the Game of the Year Edition of Batman: Arkham Asylum. Console gamers will be able to play the GOTY Edition in 3D on both HD and standard-definition TVs by way of a packed-in set of special glasses. The rerelease also brings with it four challenge maps previously released as downloadable content.
