Shippin' Out: February 21-27: Heavy Rain

Quantic Dream's PS3-exclusive thriller leads slate of new releases including Endless Ocean: Blue World, Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing, Napoleon: Total War.

This week's release forecast calls for Heavy Rain, as developer Quantic Dream launches its long-awaited PlayStation 3-exclusive adventure game. Set in a modern-day metropolis, Heavy Rain is a noir-tinged thriller that puts players in control of a handful of characters involved in the search for a serial killer with a penchant for origami.

This panicked father is just one of a handful of characters around whom Heavy Rain revolves.
This panicked father is just one of a handful of characters around whom Heavy Rain revolves.

The M-rated adventure isn't the only notable new release of the week. In more family-friendly fare, Nintendo has the follow-up to its Wii deep-sea exploration game with Endless Ocean: Blue World, while Sega puts the mascot pedal to the metal with Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing.

Over on the PC, The Creative Assembly will launch the latest installment in its signature real-time strategy series with Napoleon: Total War. As its name suggests, Napoleon: Total War follows legendary French general and (later) Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, illustrating his ascent and fall from power through the battles he waged on the battlefield.

There are still a few more frontline releases hitting shelves this week. NIS America's Hit Maker-developed role-playing game Last Rebellion arrives in stores, as does Atlus' Metal Slug XX, the latest in SNK Playmore's long line of 2D arcade action games. Finally, Deep Silver is set to bring out (albeit belatedly) the Xbox 360 edition of its medieval RPG Risen. The game first debuted on the PC in October.

For further details on the week's games, visit GameSpot's New Releases page. The full list of downloadable games on the PlayStation Store, Xbox Live Marketplace, and the Wii Shop Channel will be revealed later this week. Release dates are based on retailer listings and are subject to change.

Sonic & Sega Racing is the first game in forever that I plan to buy as soon as it's out, usually I don't here of a game until after it's release, but now that I can learn about them early this is the first I actually wish to get immediately.

The only one of those games that sounds any fun are Sonic & Sega: All-stars Racing and Risen...... Well Risen is kinda sketchy but it still sounds......not so bad....

@maverick_76 I am all for games to have multiplayer but there are more people that like only single player. I for one only play very seldum on mp. If more game companies spent more time on single then mp then we would have better and longer games. Granted some have both with mp but most companies got to have mp and throw sp in just for kicks.

@BigBigR The main reason I have issues with the replay value is a lack of multi-player. You have to agree with me that multi-player can add hundreds of extra hours of enjoyment out of a game. Shoot me a message when you get through all 23 of those endings, tell me how much fun it was. You know as well as I do you might get 3, maybe 4 play-throughs before the game becomes very repetitive. That clocks in at around 24-32 hours of playtime, about 1/3 the playtime an average game with robust multi-player will give you. I understand that this game is different and ground-breaking but so was Avatar, and I would not pay a premium to own that movie either.

@jl0pez I agree with you! The addition of Banjo-Kazooie and how well his racer played in the demo is enough to sway the fans to the XBOX 360 version. Sorry your comment's getting botched up with negative marks. Just because we want that version doesn't warrant negativity.

I hope that Heavy Rain does well in sales, but I won't be buying it (not really into the whole interactive-movie thing) Sega All Stars Racing might be worth a look too. Demo was pretty fun, but it might not be a $60 game

I'm actually so excited about Heavy Rain... I refuse to play the demo because I want the whole game to be fresh and new when I get it instead of playing a scene and being like "Ugh... I've played this before..." Day one purchase for sure, although I am really pissed off that I missed all the collector's editions...

Right now, Heavy Rain looks like a rent and NTW isn't a buy until CA corrects problems in ETW. Other then that I'm running through Borderlands again until the next DLC comes out.

I have been waiting on Heavy Rain for the last 2 years when I first heard about it at GDC 2008. The demo was phenomenal, but I will say the one negative is that the walking controls need a lot of tightening.

@maverick_76 Yes, because as you know blu-ray movies usually are 8 to 10 hours long, right? This without taking into account the 23 different endings they also usually have. *rolls eyes* And some people (I'm looking at you, Lark) say it doesn't have good replayability? Sure, it won't be as impressive as it was the first time around, but that's the same for any game I know. In most other reviews I've seen here at Gamespot when a game has several achivementes and collectibles to get after you've beaten the game, that's considered "good replay value". But it's the same story right? The same levels, the same fights, the same everything! Of course it won't be as exciting!

Heavy Rain is reminiscent of the old Sierra adventure games that were popular amongst PC-gamers in the mid-late 90s. Gabriel Knight, King's Quest, even Phantasmagoria, Police Quest appear to have influence. Heavy Rain's story itself is nothing all too impressive, but its sales may pave the way for other developers to begin delving into the adventure game genre once again.

Heavy Rain slipped right under my notice--it became available on Gamefly probably yesterday and now currently lists as "Low" availability. :( Now I think I'm actually going to have to break down and buy it if I want to play it. It may never become available through Gamefly with all the hype surrounding it now.

Heavy Rain Tuesday! It's about time a game developer realized an awesome story with realistic characters is a better way to enjoy a game rather than having people with big muscles chainsawing people with an assault rifle. Or, releasing three games, making no improvements, and getting millions.

So "Napoleon:Total War" is available today (as I pre-ordrered it) but Steam doiesn't release it until the 27th (or 28th here in Australia). Does that mean we have to wait several days to play it as it is Steam-linked? If so, not inmpressed.

@Egotte I agree, since it is so much like a movie and not a game, it has lower replay value which means I wouldn't spend more than $30 on it (current price of a new release on Blu-Ray). As of right now it is a rental, possibly a purchase when it drops in price.

So many crappy kids games crammed into only a few days. Heavy Rain isn't competing with anything. Aside from Metal Slug XX and HR I'd be insulted if they wanted premium bargin bin price for any of those games.
