Shadow Of War Review Roundup [Updated]

Shadow of More or Shadow of Bore?

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor was a surprise hit when it launched in 2014, and we even named it our Game of the Year. Three years later, its sequel, Middle-earth: Shadow of War, is about to launch.

It's already been the subject of controversy: DLC honoring Michael Forgey, a developer who passed away last year, came under fire after there were indications that a portion of the profits wouldn't go to Forgey's widow and children. Publisher Warner Bros. later apologized and made the DLC free for everyone. Shadow of War's microtransactions have also been criticized, as the first game didn't include them.

Now Playing: Middle-earth: Shadow Of War Video Review

Otherwise, however, Shadow of War seems to be going down well with critics. We awarded the open-world game a 7/10 in our review. "It tries to be larger than its predecessor … yet it leaves you wanting less," wrote Justin Haywald. "But at its core, it's a fun experience with brilliant moments that provide fascinating insight into some of the untold stories of Middle-earth." Read more in our full Shadow of War review.

GameSpot -- 7/10

"And that addition sums up several of Shadow of War's additions--things like the storefront and the menus and loot system don't make the game terrible, it just would've been better without them. It tries to be larger than its predecessor, there are more abilities, more weapons, more Orcs, yet it leaves you wanting less. But at its core, it's a fun experience with brilliant moments that provide fascinating insight into some of the untold stories of Middle-earth. I just wish it had known when to stop." -- Justin Haywald [Full review]

IGN -- 9.0/10

"Similar to the way Batman: Arkham City built on the foundation of Arkham Asylum, Middle-earth: Shadow of War is bigger and more ambitious in scope than Shadow of Mordor, with great results. The way it expands the Nemesis system with far greater variety and fortress sieges makes even better use of the stand-out generated characters, and its battles with memorable uruk captains remain challenging all the way through the campaign and into the clever asynchronous multiplayer beyond." -- Dan Stapleton [Full review]

Polygon -- 7.5/10

"If you can get past the microtransactions, Shadow Wars seems set to provide a much meatier extended playtime than Shadow of Mordor ever offered. But more than anything, that's my biggest disappointment with Middle-earth: Shadow of War: Everything about it seems to come with a caveat, some small annoyance or two that you need to dig past to get to the still-very-fun game underneath." -- Philip Kollar & Chris Plante [Full review]

Game Informer -- 9.5/10

"Shadow of War fulfills the promise of its predecessor, completing a dark and violent lost tale set within the world of The Lord of the Rings. I was initially frustrated by the liberties that Monolith takes with this beloved fiction (which are plentiful), but I eventually abandoned myself to the insanity, and fell down the rabbit hole into a superb fantasy adventure. Monolith captures the thrill of power with aplomb; the way it simultaneously speaks of its dangers and corrupting potential is the real magic." -- Matt Miller [Full review]

Eurogamer -- No score

"Shadow of War ends up the very epitome of the difficult second album. A lot has been added in order to scale it up for a full blown sequel and much of it has been implemented with style and aplomb. As fun as the core is, however, it is often overshadowed by an onerous and self-indulgent story. What should be the game's crowning feature is instead reduced to an undeserved supporting role, like an exquisitely carved plinth groaning under the weight of a gaudy bronze bust of an elven wraith who's looking very, very serious indeed." -- Johnny Chiodini [Full review]

GamesRadar -- 4.5/5

"For the most part, this is big spectacle and richly layered experience. The different regions are beautiful and varied to explore, while Sauron's forces are alway entertaining to meet and beat. If there are moments that don't quite click or things that fatigue a little it's because of that scale. There's almost an Assassin's Creed 2 feel of map spatter to all the markers for towers, collectables, bits and so on. I've not 100%-ed it but you’re easily looking at a triple figure time should you try. This isn't a game to get in for the weekend, it's something to buy and cancel plans for the year." -- Leon Hurley [Full review]

PC Gamer -- 73/100

"It all comes back to the orcs. They’re the reason I kept playing, even when I was losing interest in everything else. A motley, gruesome, ill-mannered crew of swines that are a constant joy to fight and befriend. And the increased variety and depth of the nemesis system makes for a much richer experience overall. I just wish the game wasn’t quite so overfed. A lot of developers think sequels need to be bigger and offer more to get people interested, but I’d prefer it if they were just better. Shadow of War is a great action game that feels like it’s yearning to break free from a prison of open world busywork." -- Andy Kelly [Full review]

US Gamer -- 4/5

"The Nemesis System is an illusion, but it's one I still enjoy. I legitimately enjoyed building my own orc army and stomping over someone else's fortress ... Despite all that, Shadow of War does stumble into a bit of a grind in the latter part of the game and the Chests system could be tuned much better. As it stands now, it's transparent in wanting you to open your wallet and buy a bit of Gold. Those issues are what keep Shadow of War from being an absolutely amazing game, instead of just a great one." -- Mike Williams [Full review]

Easy Allies -- 3.5/5

"Many of the best moments in Shadow of War come from elements returning from the first game, along with a few squabbles between Celebrimbor and Talion that begin to give them some identity. Otherwise, orcs always take center stage. The combat isn't terribly difficult, but it's a lot of fun to rip enemies apart. The story isn't very satisfying, but it's amusing to assemble a cast of murderous Captains. Shadow of War is a successful update to a smart formula, but it lacks enough depth and diversity to keep us enthralled." -- Brandon Jones [Full review]

Removing this from my wishlist... So disappointing the path AAA gaming has gone down. I was really looking forward to it too.

All of you defending these disgusting business practices, I ask.. Is it really worthwhile for you to keep defending these charlatans, as they push more and more gambling into our games, gambling that you'd have much better odds of winning if you were in Vegas?

All they needed to do was make a good game that doesn't do this and they would have made a boatload of cash from sales alone but that is never enough, is it? So, they alienate a large quantity of their fanbase to make more money from Loot Boxes in a single player campaign that has been geared to frustrate and annoy you with tedious grinding, an issue that they themselves created for the very purpose of making us pay to pass. It is revolting to the point where I am really beginning to really f*cking hate this industry, an industry that once had at least some ethics and not this morally bankrupt greed infested swine we see now, an industry that had a desire to create good customer satisfying games. Where did their consciences go to?

So why do they keep doing this thing that NOBODY is asking for? Well, stupid people, to be blunt, who will defend this, no matter what. YOU are the problem, people. You lot who excuse this shady behaviour... Vote with your wallets, now. Not next time, now!

It's clear that it is not about making a good game to sell anymore, not the AAA side of gaming. Nah it's all about making a game just passable enough that it looks like it may be fun but that fun is short lived and then the greedy b*stards double dip with worthless crates, triple dip with pre-ordering, quadruple dip with day one DLC, the list goes on but I'm not sure what else I can call it (quint dipping) and it is just excused away by blabbering numbskulls with more money than sense.

@punksterdaddy: You have a right to your own convictions. I guess I am just worried about other things (work, governement, life) that seem like a bigger deal than micro transactions in video games. I play video games to relax. It just kinda bothers me to see people participating in video game activism when games are designed for people to have fun and relax. Didn't mean to step on your toes. Just wanted to let people know it is ok to play this game and that they are not traitors for wanting to have fun. Some people on here acting like it is a sin to buy this game.

@Legend_of_Link: You can worry about those things and still be concerned over this. One does not cancel out the other, mate.

Yes, games are designed for people to have fun, which is why I find this greedy business practice so disgusting and I am unwilling to accept it. It's a shame you are so focused on the Gamers and not the businesses doing this. If you think me not buying this game makes me an activist, then so be it but I wouldn't say so, I have plenty of games I have not bought yet but I get what you are trying to say.

I appreciate the more mature response so I will share some information with you that you may or may not be aware of yet, if you do not want to be encouraged to buy loot boxes. When you play it for the first time, you will face the terms of service, if you click yes but do not tick the box, you will not have WB trying to push the microtransactions onto you. It will say that you are going to miss out of the online experience but that is going to depend on yourself. I believe they will ask you again later, so you will have the chance to change your mind. Also, you won't have people affecting your base, while you are offline but again that comes down to personal choice.

I find it interesting, that they have done this in this way. I guess it must be a legal requirement to allow them to effectively engage you with gambling (a sort of workaround), allowing them to do this with no chance of legal challenge.

The choice is yours, so go enjoy your game with or without the Loot Boxes. Have fun, I mean that.

@punksterdaddy: I like that you mentioned having plenty of games to play because that's all I can think about when Shadow Of War comes up. Yeah it's got some nice visuals and the expanded nemesis system seems great but it's combat doesn't look any more complex and it certainly won't satisfy as a fan of Tolkien. Just this month we have Super Mario Odyssey, AC Origins, Wolfenstein 2, Forza 7, GT Sport, Evil Within 2, South Park 2, Destiny 2 on PC (so many 2s) a few remasters, and a few indie games that look good. Plus we just had some big games like Total War: Warhammer 2, Project Cars 2, and MvC: Infinite and we have more coming next month like Battlefront 2, Call of Duty WW2, Need For Speed: Payback, and Ni No Kuni 2. So long drawn out point being there's way too many goddamn games coming out in the end of 2017 to get hung up over one if you have fundamental problems with it.

That's why I hate it when people say "Oh shut up you're all going to buy. it!" we're not all rich we have to make choices about how many full priced games we buy and being pushed to pay an extra $5-100 on microtransactions and another $50 on varyingly substantial DLC is a big detractor for some. Meanwhile why shouldn't we talk about out criticisms with games? How the hell else are devs supposed to know how to improve them and publisher know how to get our money?

@stealthyoctopus: Yes, there are plenty of games for all to play. I really enjoyed Shadow of Mordor and hoped to buy this one but nah, I cannot support a game doing this. I have to draw the line at some point, may as well be now.

I may use that unspent SoW money on South Park: The Fractured But Whole but I need to see what sort of BS Ubisoft is going to pull off first. I can't see Matt and Trey agreeing to such scummy practices of Loot Boxes in a Single Player game, so I may be fine there but I just this second heard that AC: Origins will have them too (I just learned from a video/podcast while typing this out), so that is likely another game off my list. Damn it!

Stand by your morals, that's the only thing we can really do.

@punksterdaddy: AC Origins game director did say the loot boxes aren't microtransactions you can only buy them with in-game money. Now whether or not you can buy the games currency as microtransactions remains to be seen but it's hard to give them a benefit of a doubt there. I really hope it's not the case because I've loved their willingness to change for the better and I wish other big game franchises would follow their lead as far as that goes. Also the expansions they announced today actually seemed interesting and maybe even worth whatever they're going to charge for them. Outside of Freedom Cry (which was more of a small stand alone game) that's the first time I've said anything like that about the AC's series DLC since Brotherhood's Da Vinci Disappearance which was almost 7 years ago by the way.

@punksterdaddy: I have zero desire to do any of the online fort stuff and I will be able to grind to the end no problem. People use the "grind" word like it is the worst experience they have ever had. I don't mind grinding in some games. I loved the grind of Ni No Kuni for example. I honestly am getting this so I can have something new to play while I am waiting for my Xbox One X and Assassins Creed Origins, Wolfenstein 2, and Mario Odyssey. I am really really excited for the new AC and the Egyptian setting. Anyways thanks for the chat. Have a good one.

@Legend_of_Link: Ni No Kuni didn't have a multiplaer portion of the game, nor did they design the grind with a cash shop in mind. Shill elsewhere. Your busted.

@Legend_of_Link: That's the Gaming community I remember, good show, mate.

Then not checking that box should have no effect on your choices in playing? Then that is what I recommend you do if it is not too late by this point.

Accept the terms but don't check the box.

Enjoy your game, I shall stick with XCOM 2 in the meantime.

@TaronAroyan: Well this "sucker" is a commercial developer who builds buildings for multiple different retailers across the country. I also have a business degree from TCU. I could spend a 1000 dollars on this game, and it not be a big deal. You want to know why? It is because I make a killing. You attacking me for my opinion shows how far you will make it in life. I will continue to work my ass off, and continue to be a valued member of society; while you police these comment sections for people to harass and call "Cancer on the Industry". Your comment about me being a cancer on the industry makes no sense by the way. It is guys like me that keep this industry going. I spend thousands of dollars on games a year, because it is my hobby. My spending habits actually push the industry forward. You have fun tonight. I will be playing this awesome game on my big ass 4k TV with the surround sound cranked up and I will think of you and have a laugh. Have a great fucking day asshole.

@Legend_of_Link: Lol not sure where to start... just because you are a "whale" doesn't mean you aren't a "sucker", it just means you are one of the big ones out there. I congratulate you on your successful career, but some humility will go a long way, also the way everything was written I am thinking a child is trolling me, surely a grownup wouldn't be bragging about "1K on games is not a big deal". The reason I am calling your kind a cancer, because you allow the disgusting publishers to get away with their tactics. You claim that you do this because you are successful, but the truth is that you are "weak", "impatient", "have a lot of insecurities". Success shouldn't blind a person from getting screwed over and unfortunately people like you mess up for people like me. Game publishers should be held to high standards, and do their job with honor, like CD Red Project or From Software and such. The bad ones need to be scorned and criticized and not encouraged, (like you kind is doing). Anyone who buys any game with micro-transaction is encouraging this behavior (doesn't matter if you use them or not) and all of them are cancer in my eyes.

I feel your frustration; that's pretty much how feel about always-online titles (Destiny(2), Evolve, The Division, Battleborn, etc) and Pre-ordering.

They are simply bad practices that shouldn't be supported.

@beantownsean: @juxax@Molokai16 Thanks. When do we ALL say that we've had enough? Probably never. I've kept silent about this for too long but seeing the reactions I keep getting to what everyone should pretty much agree on is frustrating.

I find it abhorrent seeing what most AAA games have done now, as they keep pushing those boundaries as to what is the line, I see more and more excusing it away as no biggie, that it doesn't affect them but it does, even when they believe they are not.

For instance: Most game companies are not going to invest their money into a system of Loot Boxes only to make it completely irrelevant, even if they say that it will not ruin the flow of the game, all evidence points to the contrary.

Anyway, here is a link to a meme that says it so much better than I can ever do. Please have a look. ;)

@punksterdaddy: That's one of the reasons I'm passing on this game. Also I played the first game, and while the 1st half of the game was alot of fun, when I got to the 2nd half and saw that it was pretty much the same, I completly lost interest.

Also I've stopped buying games at full price. All of these different versions and what not are getting out of hand, and their pricing along with it. Disgusting...

@punksterdaddy: You're addressing a general populous that has no morals, no dignity, no common sense nor any self discipline. What "minds" are there to possibly change? Like animals that act on instinct, gamers do whatever the hell they want regardless of consequence. If you've ever played an online game with any of them, you will see your opinions are wasted.

@punksterdaddy: You know games have pretty much stayed the same cost to buy for decades, while cost of development has skyrocketed. Who cares if they offer a creative solution thats totally opional, when it doesn't even hold back content from the game, that some people like to buy? When they do it in this fashion I like it, cause it means there needs a lot of content to justify it and I can go earn it all for nothin, with an incentive to play the game longer. I really like grindy games for loot.

And you know what, there's some people with extra cash but not a lot of time to play games and may even enjoy gambling which this system is perfect for. The only blow back is from people like your who think the world revolves around them and think they're on some holy mission to purge the world from evil by with holding your $59.99. And if your plan is so much better, go out and develop your own game and show us how its done.

@punksterdaddy: I'd just like to point out that the dev team for Super Mario Bros 2 (a $49.99 game) while the dev team for GTA 5 was over 1000 (a $59.99 game). Yes, there's an economy of scale happening here, but games are more costly to make than they used to be. I don't think @Dogmatic923 was talking about the tech it's developed on, but the people it takes to develop it.

@93ChevyNut: I don't really care, mate. He should argue for himself if he can do so. so far I am not impressed. I'm sure you mean well but he doesn't (at least shouldn't) need you to defend him or to make arguments he never made, on his behalf.

Games were heavily criticised back then for being way too expensive. On gen one we could get games for a few pounds then when the Nintendo and Sega consoles came along they jumped up in price four-fold, it was regarded as shameful greed at the time.

If you are going to compare two different eras of gaming, then you have to take everything into account, not cherry pick things to favour your (his) argument. Yeah, it has become a billion-dollar industry but that doesn't justify gambling in games aimed at kids with a T rating on Star Wars Battlefront II or in this case Loot Boxes in a single player game. If they made a good game people will buy it, put this crap in the game and it puts a vast number off but the Publishers/Developers don't care, they will get their money elsewhere selling skins and pay to win items to those foolish enough to buy them.

I gave my opinions on what I think of this, then all the children come along and start trying to tell me that MTs are just fine and dandy and it is me that's wrong? I'm not wrong, it is my opinion and you are all free to ignore it. It is hardly endearing me to this industry, anymore, when no one can say sh*te about a rightfully scummy business practice within said industry, without some clown telling me that it's fine and it is somehow justified. It's not fine, nor is it justified, it is unethical and should be stopped or heavily regulated, it is gambling and gambling that allows children to take part.

What part of that is just peachy for all?

@punksterdaddy: I was contributing to the conversation, not coming to his aid or fighting some battle for him (apparently you see it as such).

For what it's worth, I don't care for MTs on full-priced games any more than you do. But they are indeed optional. True, they shorten an artificially lengthened grindfest in the hopes of making more money, but my point still stands that the price of games hasn't gone up by much. All things being equal, if SMB2 was $50 when it came out, then it should be $116 today, yet games never go beyond $60. They only go beyond that with DLC, season passes, and MTs.

Face it, MTs are here to stay. If you don't like it, vote with your wallet (which it sounds like you're doing). Writing walls of text isn't going to change anything. As for the children, that's up to the parents to explain. If a kid gets an allowance (or part-time job) and wants to spend it on loot boxes, who am I to tell him/her that he/she can't?

Have you ever bought a car? Surely you are aware that you can buy virtually the same car with different MTs (or options, as they call it). Are those options necessary? Nope. Will they alter your enjoyment of said car? Possibly. But that's for you to decide. Should all cars be cloth interior so no one is allowed to have leather to make sure that everyone pays the same price? Or maybe all cars should be fully loaded and the prices set sky-high so only the super rich can afford them?

Options are good.

@93ChevyNut: I gave my opinions, I am not going to restate them all again but I will say once more that comparing gaming from days of old, has no bearing on what happens now within the industry as if that makes what they are doing now justifiable.

I disagree with your analogy and the length of the comment I made has nothing to do with anything. I do appreciate you being civil, so I shall agree to disagree and leave it at that.

Peace

@punksterdaddy: I'm moronic uh? Well... you've must have been born in the land of stupid or maybe it's just a classic case of brain cancer. I'm not sure how to reply to someone that brain cancer has eaten away all the grey matter and parts that govern logical thinking from their brain. Just keep your hard earned $59.99, that took you weeks to make by flippin burgers. At least you still retained your basic motor skills to be able to flip those burgers. Although its not servering you well in this case cause your fingers on the key board is typing the words but it's nothing more than random gibberish is coming out.

In 9 hours i'll be slaying hordes of orcs in middle earth, the devs will be banking on those who like to gamble and life will go on. All the while, you be sitting their with nothing to do but to update your bio and picture on your online dating website based in third world countries around Asia cause the only hits you get are from bots. Women would rather eat grass, drink muddy water and live in shakes than be caught dead with you.

Looks like less is more with Gamespot's reviews. I like how he says SoW "tries to be larger than it's. predecessor." TRIES? Sorry, they didn't 'try,' the succeed 10 fold. I just get this vibe the reviewer treated this game as just another run of the mill game to review and he tried to burn through as fast as he could to check that box and earn his pay check for the week.

As a fan of the game that has seen hours and hours of indepht game reveal footage, the Gamespot review reads like a 5th grader book report by a student who was give an assignment to cover the rise and fall of Rome. All the while Johnny, or student, was dumbfounded by the amount of historical content he had to cover all the while wishing he had picked a less complicated assignment like the Biography of Dora the Explorer, so he could back to things that matter most, like playing Call of Duty.

What true hearted fan of the game would "want less" out of this game? I think any unbiased fella would be hard pressed to find one. However, I get it that if your not a fan of this game cause you don't like the play style or genre that's fine, but let's take the reviewer's logic down to his level: "the new Call of Duty is offering 10 muliplayer maps at launch" he'd reply, "oh no, i want less. Please only release 5. Please don't 'try' to give us more than usual cause that may double my work load for the week"

Please Gamespot, for the love of all gaming, get this man away from the keyboard and resign him to a job where less is more. Like his pay is less and his work is more. Like outside picking up trash in the parking lot. No reasonable fan wants to see their game have 'less' ok...

@Dogmatic923: That's almost all the reviews these days, publishers don't give the writers enough time to do a proper review, and the people doing the work are most likely severely underpaid.

Also, this is gamespot, you don't come here for quality journalism.

@Zero_Maniac: Well I spent nearly 100 hours in BOTW, besides there's lots of RPGs (such as Persona 5 I hear) that are pretty lengthy

@Daelusca: Er...because Persona 5 is an RPG?

https://www.google.com/search?safe=active&q=persona+5+genre&oq=persona+5+genre&gs_l=psy-ab.3..0j0i22i30k1.3753.12872.0.13064.39.23.0.0.0.0.344.2401.0j12j1j1.15.0....0...1.1.64.psy-ab..25.14.2710.6..35i39k1j0i131k1j0i67k1j0i20i264k1j0i20i263k1.460.BQU3A7_H7FA

And BOTW was just an example of getting tons of hours from games. So...happy to help your easygoing humor?

@xenomorphalien: lol.....if you need to rely on Wiki to tell you that a game is an "RPG" you're missing the point and have no idea what an RPG actually is....jRPG's (which I wouldn't even count Persona as...it's more like a dating sim for young teenagers) are not technically RPGs either, but there was no genre for turn-based adventure type games at the time. Wiki, and most noobs, define an RPG as a "role" playing game....which is a meaningless distinction as literally every single video game ever invented the player plays a "role"....not overly helpful as descriptives go, yes?

RPGs come from D&D, where "role" was understood by players to mean "roll".......meaning no game is a true RPG if you do not create a character....not play a character....create one....that's why games such as Skyrim, Fallout, DA:I, Divinity:OS and Pillars of Eternity ARE RPGs and games like Assassin's Creed, Witcher, MGS and Zelda have RPG elements (leveling) but ARE NOT RPG's...they are "adventure" games of various sorts.....again, Persona wouldn't even be an adventure game.

Again, thanks for my morning chuckle :)

@Daelusca: ...and none of that changes the fact that Persona 5 is considered an RPG. Google is your friend.

Thanks for wasting my time with a 2 paragraph slogfest

@xenomorphalien: Not when the entire game is built around them. Ask yourself was the change made to make the game more fun for the player or to milk more money out of you?
