Several Star Wars TV Shows Are In Development, Disney Confirms

More Wars.

Disney launches its streaming service in 2019, and as well as making many of its movies and TV shows available, the studio is planning to develop new shows exclusively for the service. Inevitably one of these is to be a Star Wars live-action series. Disney boss Bob Iger has now revealed that the studio is in fact developing more than one Star Wars show.

During Disney's quarterly investors call, Iger stated that it won't be long before we get more details about the studio's plans. "We are developing not just one, but a few Star Wars series specifically for the Disney direct to consumer app," he said, via Collider. "We've mentioned that and we are close to being able to reveal at least one of the entities that is developing that for us. Because the deal isn't completely closed, we can't be specific about that, [but] I think you'll find the level of talent on the television front will be rather significant as well."

A Star Wars live-action show was in development for several years prior to Disney's purchase of Lucasfilm in 2012. Star Wars creator George Lucas was planning a series called Underworld, that was to take place between Episode III and Episode IV, and reportedly 50 scripts were written before the Disney deal canceled the project.

In related news, it was also announced this week that Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will write and produce a new series of Star Wars movies. Disney confirmed that these films will be separate from the current Skywalker saga and the trilogy of movies that Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is working on. "David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today," Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said in a statement. "Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting."

The next Star Wars movie will be the spin-off Solo: A Star Wars Story. The movie hits theaters in May, and the first trailer was released this week. You can check out GameSpot's full breakdown of the Solo trailer here.

And those tv shows will rely on canon's clone wars or around new republic era, resolving same shit we already know. Disney just kill star wars or evolutionise and go beyond that outmilked era... Maybe GoT showrunners will show some respect to pure star wars fans and craft movies relying only on old republic lore...

I, for one, really liked Rouge One and am interested to see what will come of this. Yes, I agree that there are too many super hero movies out there but a lot of people certainly enjoy them (personally I like a lot of the Disney Marvel movies) and I'm hopeful this can bring some great Star Wars experiences too.

Now as for EA's Battlefront (#!@?!) Why they can't even make the standard checkpoint control style game with (on-line) co-op against bots that made me originally love the series is beyond me. Great looking game that feels like Star Wars but aside from the space battles which I find enjoyable I find it hard to bring myself to play the game. So go ahead and bring back microtransactions, I got the game on a big sale but you won't be getting any more of my money.

A new Star Wars movie back in the day, ESB & ROTJ in particular, were more like religious experiences and guaranteed to be jaw dropping. They always expanded the story and took special effects & cinematography to a whole new level.

The Star Wars franchise just isn't special anymore.

Boy. I was sick of Star Wars when the original trilogy was like 10 or 15 years old and every TV show still thought it was clever to parody it and they were still making Star Wars video games all the time. I'm thoroughly sick of it now with all the over-saturation, but at least it revolves around new content.

A live action Star Wars TV show could be great. It could also not. I've lost interest in new extended universe stuff since they killed off the old one. I understand why they did it, but I was hoping they could replace it with something at least as interesting as before. But it hasn't happened. Oh well, here's hoping for the best, expecting the worst!

It's like a parody, two trilogies in development, bunch of TV shows, and still EA aren't making any goddamn Star Wars games.

For real though, Star Wars is about to get dragged through the mud. There's just too much.

@spaced92: SW has already been dragged through the mud.....the only difference is when Lucas did it, it still resembled SW and as Disney is doing it, it looks like any generic Sci-Fi movie series that put too much money on the effects and not the writing......

this isn't a parody, it's a travesty.....

Clearly Disney doesn't understand the concept of moderation. They are going to oversaturate the market with Star Wars and just run it into the ground until everyone is sick of it.

This franchise is about to get tortured and raped. The series ended when Lucas retired and they all celebrated on Endor with the Ewoks and lived happily ever after. Luke's character is officially fukt and he's Like THE main guy. Luke's Character in the game Jedi Knight 2, Jedi outcasts , was where Luke should of been, in the future movies. Building up the next generation of young Jedi younglings somewhere, in some random out of the way system, no one knew about. Accept Leia, With Karl Katarn. Lol. Kylo Rens ultimate mission, should of been finding Luke's secret youngling base and stopping Luke from training powerful younglings and Rey should of been one of those powerful younglings.

@nyran125tk: yet when people say they like stuff like Jedi Knight 2 and jedi Academy they're saying they like some of the concepts of extended universe yet nobody ever supported extended universe so they just did away with it.....

the chance of SW actually returning to what resembles SW is impossible now......not with Rian Johnson about to drop more BS on us and a second trilogy planned with even more BS and the dumb fracking moronic side movies....

here let's fill in the death star plans heist mission oh wait it doesn't fit the movies cus when you think about it, within days they go from an ineffective squabbling group to absolutely knowing their stuff.....all thanks to 1 girl who got herself and her team killed....meanwhile Han....not a rebel when he was introduced survives everything that was thrown at him and comes back for more...leia survived the imperial machine......FFS the writing is retarded....

and now they're gonna ruin Han by going back in time.....I bet $100 that by the end hans adventure puts him in a position that doesn't match the movies.....

then the next of these abominations will be Boba Fett.....and after that i bet they do Tarkin....and after that what Lando?? pfft

SW is a joke anymore...

Good job Disney. Star Wars is becoming the new superhero genre, bland, overdone, and boring. I can't believe I've reached a point in my life where new Star Wars stuff doesn't interest me... but here we are...

I hope Amazon treats The Lord of the Rings with the respect it deserves. Please Amazon, do better than Disney.

@gamingdevil800: I would love to be pleasantly surprised, but I probably won't be. The magic of the original trilogy (and even the lackluster prequel movies) is dead. At least Lucas treated Star Wars with respect. His direction may have been convoluted but he always treated the universe with respect. I was prepared to give Episode 7 a pass as the reboot it was but I'm done.

Disney isn't treating Star Wars by what it was. Disney is turning Star Wars into what they want it to be.

@nyran125tk: A lot of fan service in Revenge of the sith in terms of people we wanted to see fighting in lightsaber duels lol but honestly I enjoyed Revenge more than Disney's new star wars movies.

I grew up on the original trilogy. I'm old enough to saw I saw Return of the Jedi when it first released in theaters. And while I've never been a massive fan like some of my friends (I'm more of a Trek guy), I've re-watched both the original trilogy and even the prequels multiple times. And I enjoyed Force Awakes, Rogue One, and Last Jedi. I've never been interested in the spin-off comics or extended universe in the novels.

Between this and the annual movies? It's becoming over-saturation.

If they throw enough spaghetti at the wall, some of it is bound to stick.

Never thought I'd say it, but I'm leaning heavily towards tapping out on Star Wars. The new movies are progressively meh, and TLJ is just wth. About the only thing I've really enjoyed is the new Darth Vader comics, but even those aren't keeping my interest now. The bombardment of new shows and movies should have excited me, but I just can't seem to care now.

@lionheartssj1: Star Wars use to be movies which were a must see at cinemas for me but with Solo on the horizon I've become very sceptical about Disney's approach.
