Sega shot down joint Sony console

In an interview with Sega-16, former head of publisher's US operations recalls that his superiors at Sega of Japan rejected the plan to focus on original work.

Sega's history as a console manufacturer came to an end with the death of the Dreamcast in 2001, but it didn't necessarily have to end that way.

An interview with the former president of Sega of America, Tom Kalinske, who helmed the upstart US division of the company during the mid-1990s, has revealed that he wanted the company to codevelop a game console with Sony--but was denied by higher-ups.

The first discussions of that partnership dated back to the days of the Genesis, Kalinske said. During Sega's development of the Sega CD, "one of our strongest partners in developing for that platform was Sony," he said.

"[T]here was really this wonderful collaborative effort," he said. "We each benefited from each other's work, and I think that's one of the things that has been forgotten in video game industry lore or history: that this very strong bond existed back then between the two companies."

He said he then proposed a joint console, to be developed by Sega and Sony, to the executives at Sega of Japan. Both companies would have expected to lose money initially on the console, he said, but Sega--the more experienced of the two in game development--vetoed the idea.

"Sega said 'Not a chance,'" Kalinske recalled. "Why would it want to share a platform with Sony? Sega would be much better off just developing its own platform."

"Sega knew how to develop software a hell of a lot better than Sony did," he continued. "They were just coming up the learning curve, so we would have benefited much more greatly--at least in my opinion--than Sony would have, at least initially, at least for a year or two. But Sega of Japan didn't want any of that."

More than a decade after the release of the Sega CD, why didn't we hear about the collaboration between Sony and Sega earlier?

"I don't think it ever came up; I don't think I was ever asked by anybody [for an interview]," said Kalinske, who is now the CEO of LeapFrog, which released the educational game handheld Leapster. "I mean, I don't think that's particularly abnormal. In the United States, once you move from one position to another, they don't generally call and ask you about past stuff."

As it turns out, Sony had the last laugh. After the Sega Dreamcast ceased production, Sony's PlayStation 2 eventually became the best-selling console on the planet, with more than 100 million units sold. Sega, however, wasn't the only console-maker that Sony tried to partner with before going out on its own. The company had approached Nintendo to develop a CD-based console, but after a now-infamous falling out between the two companies at the 1991 Consumer Electronics Show, Sony went on to develop its own system, the PlayStation.

WeeWeeJumbo, Your 1st and 2nd sentences contradict each other. And what fate would be worse for Sega than to lose any grip they had on the console market? I can understand being anti-Sony, but if you're gonna make a point at least try to make sense.

I think the best fanboys, are the ones who are quick to knock down other fanboys, just to defend their OWN company of choice. ...yeah, THEY aren't fanboys at all....not one single bit. A lot of people could learn something from looking up the word 'hypocrit'. Generally, it's a negative term -- something you don't want to be. Then again, I don't consider myself a fanboy...maybe that's a goal of theirs?

There is actually a chance that Sony might win the Next-gen war and make $600 the new standard of console price, perhaps in 2 generations. Alot of people are just saying Sony will be destroyed because of the price. You can't base everything on the price. You have to add the games, their promises, and potential of the PS3 into the equation.

"best-selling console on the planet, with more than 100 million units sold" With over 66% of those being repurchases from the system breaking down and Sony refusing to fix it for free (even under warranty) or replace it even if it was a manufacturing defect. You can look this up on Gamespot, there is plenty of articles on it. I feel sad for Sega really, the Dreamcast was ahead of its time, and then Sony screwed them, like they do everyone.

What must have seemed to be a major set back for Sony with this SEGA dispute and the "falling out" with Nintendo ultimately benefited Sony for the best. I still wonder what the industry would look like now if Nintendo had co-produced a CD based system with Sony???

But I would like to know more about the "now-infamous falling out." Could you have left a link to a story with those detail? what happened was Nintendo and Sony partnered up for Sony to create the Play Station (original name) it was the disc addon for the SNES (a few companies were eagerly anticapating it to and were using it to it's full extent). What no one knew though was Nintendo was nervous about the whole CD market, for Sega the SegaCD wasn't selling all that well, there weren't many developers making games for it either. Nintendo also felt it was getting shafted on the deal with Sony (in a sence they were, Sony would be the ones to own the Play Station and make the bulk of the money off it) so they were secretly trying to find someone else to make a CD addon for them. Cut to CES, Sony was waiting near the Nintendo booth all set to walk out on stage and announce the Play Station for the SNES. The Nintendo president (I think, don't remember) walked out and uttered the name Phillips, not Sony, as the company of choice for their CD addon. This pissed off way to many people, People in Japan wondered what nintendo was thinking and why they betrayed a Japanese company to go with a US based one to provide the addon (a very big no no at that time). In the end, nintendo went with 2 more companies before completly dropping the CD addon, leaving both Sony with a half complete system (the Play Station) and Phillips with a half finished system (the CDi). Both companies decided to finish the system since it was basically complete and release it, that's when it got it's name Playstation X or PSX and Phillips released the CDi with "Screw you" games aimed directly at nintendo (they had an agreement that they could make games if they so choose to and they basically made link as stereotypically gay as you could possibly imagine. I think they did a couple of Mario games to but the Link games are the ones that are most memorable. There's also rumors that the reason Nintendo went with cartridges for the N64 instead of CD's is because of the screw over to Sony & phillips and it somehow barred Nintendo from using discs for it.

It is SO COOL to bash Sony! It makes you seem wiser too. Nintendo and SEGA were incredibly smart not to jump on the Sony gravy train. Considering how incredibly quickly and how incredibly hard Sony gripped the home console market over the last decade, it's obvious that SEGA would have suffered a fate even worse than its actual death by making a console in concert with Sony. Sony is the worst! It was incredibly clever for Nintendo to stab Sony in the back over the Super NES CD. This way, Nintendo lost all grip on the home console market and got relegated to third place, trounced in its home court by the upstart rookies. And that was GOOD for Nintendo. Now, Nintendo can pursue the Not-Even-Interested-In-Games crowd, because it knows it's lost what it takes to appeal to most people who aren't interested in handhelds. GOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAL!

Sega did make a good decision given what they knew, they were coming off the success of the Genesis and had no reason to share what they thought would be a success with Sony who had very little experience at the time. It's not like they could've possibly forseen Sony developing a console by themselves. The big reason Sony was a success is that they came out of nowhere with a system that wasn't following the trend at the time of releasing half-assed consoles that weren't that much better than what was out at the time. Just look at the Saturn, before Sony announced the PS1 and scared them into beefing up their 3D capabilities it was basically just a Sega Genesis/32x/CD compressed into a singular system. I don't feel that we can assume that a Sony/Sega Saturn would have been anything different, same with the Nintendo PlayStation (or perhaps more aptly named SNES CD).

kinncolts first of all the reason Sony never teamed up wiht Nintendo is that Ninty found out that Sony was jsut using the CD- add on for SNES as a test to see how good the PS1 wud do...PS1 was in develpoment be4 Ninty and SONY made a deal......and sure SEGA might be dead...but honestly how cud they hav known they were goin to die so quickly..i mean DC was a good console....but yea..u cant stay on top forever How old are you during the early 90s? Sony was developing PSX or PlayStation-X for Nintendo. They are not doing a test run by adding a CD drive on the SNES. Better learn your gaming history before you post.

But I would like to know more about the "now-infamous falling out." Could you have left a link to a story with those detail? Also - corporate executives are stupid. Sega was done in by its own arrogance and how ironic that could be the downfall of Sony - IF the PS3 flops.

''Good read, Sony has owned two gaming giants... next stop... Microsoft. Dun dun dunnnnnn!'' Taking down Microsoft in the next gen gaming arena is easier said then done. Microsoft has enough egocentric game designers who won't amit that they are greater then anyone on this planet, third party support, and gamers of a vocal minority to convince the idioitic consumer to purchase the console.

Nedemis good to see that Nintendo wasn't the only smart company....Sega made a wise choice as well and it's worked out for both Sega and Nintendo seeing as Sony's setting themselves up for failure.. at least Sega and Nintendo have quality titles that will keep them above water for quite some time.. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I once thought that Gamespot was a generally rabid-fanboy-free zone...I guess I was incredibly wrong. Maybe some of you people just haven't noticed how Sony currently has a grip on a majority of the market share. I don't really see how they're in such a "sad state" in the gaming industry considering that they've shipped over 100 million units of their current-gen console...

If sega had a little more time they would show them whos boss!!! i'm hoping that Sega strikes again and lauches a new console in the future so it can rise the empire again and kill sony! i'm going to laugh so hard when they realize ps3 is going to be a fiasco

Whether Sega or Nintendo - they would have eventually been swallowed up or lost control to the bigger Sony.. You think Sony would of taken us down Nintendo's innovative path ? I think we'd likely see and Power vs Power for the PS3 vs Xbox360 and no 3rd company to add something different. It's easy to look back or guess what may or may not have been but it may have been for the better. Sony is an electronics corp - Sega and Nintendo are game corps, keep them apart.

Sega having quality titles?? They sure showed Sony who's boss with the what-cast?? Oh yea THEY DON'T HAVE A CONSOLE ANYMORE!!!! Do people on this board just like seeing themselves type? that comment made no sense, So sony does not have quality titles? *shakes head* I will never understand the staunch fanboys who can't even see that Sony is still a decsent company and has helped the gaming and DVD industry just as much as Nintendo saved the industry about 12 years ago. Lets start giving these companies a little more credit, in the end the only thing that Micro, Ninty and Sony are doing is creating video games.........and isn't that what it's really all about for us the consumer? You people talk like you want just one company to rule them all.......and it does not take a lord of the ring fan to understand how much that really would suck.......

Anyways.. the dreamcast was a way better machine than the PS2, i mean explain how the DC could emulate PS1 games better looking than the PS2 could! lol thats funny.. plus the DC had some nice games, if it had lasted longer it would have been great.

I think it was good that sega and nintendo never joined sony. For one thing their would be no nintendo wii even though im buying ps3. But i believe those companies would hold back sony's way of thinking. This i believe would make microsoft the industries leading game company. I really dun't think ps3 would've have been this good if it partnered with sega or nintendo. Everything happens for a reason and i think this was the best for sony. Their an individual leader of electronics GO PS3!!!!!!!!!!!!

WTF, Sony haters? Sega made the right decision, are you kidding? Just like Nintendo made the right decision, losing 2 generations to Sony and now conceding victory in the next gen? Say what you will about Sony, but they came in out of nowhere and owned the two established players in the industry.

If you're going to make a gaming brand to dominate the world, rejection by Nintendo and Sega would certainly light a fire under any company's arse to try and show them up, and that company happened to be the Sony corporation. Oops!
