Scholarships Now Available for League of Legends Players

Robert Morris University-Illinois has announced a Varsity League of Legends Team, with scholarships to incentivize players to enroll.

Robert Morris University-Illinois has announced on its website that qualified League of Legends players can now receive scholarships for college to play the game.

RMU becomes the first college to offer such scholarships for eSports athletes with this announcement. Students who qualify can receive up to 50 percent of tuition and and up to 50 percent of room and board costs covered by the aid.

Along with the establishment of the scholarship, RMU has also created a Varsity League of Legends team that will compete with other colleges in the Collegiate Starleague. Other participating colleges include Harvard, George Washington, and Arizona State. Teams from the United States and Canada compete for the North American Collegiate Championship, a League of Legends tournament organized by developer Riot Games. Winners receive $100,000 in scholarships from the tournament.

Associate Athletic Director and eSports coordinator Kurt Melcher explains the decision: "Robert Morris University has always been at the forefront of providing opportunities for a diverse student population with different interests and skills. League of Legends is a competitive, challenging game which requires significant amount of teamwork to be successful."

This year, Riot Games announced that 27 million people play League of Legends every day, and even more watch it online.

It is likely that more colleges will follow RMU's decision in the coming years. Either way, this will certainly fuel the debate of whether or not eSports should be considered a "real sport."

So I tried out watching LCS this year, and I was actually pleasantly surprised. It takes a bit to learn how to follow the game as a spectator (especially since I was just beginning to play the game myself), some games are boring as all hell and you can't wait for them to be over, but some games are edge of your seat tense, very chaotic, back and forth, great action.

Kinda like athletic sports, honestly. Now, there's nothing athletic about playing video games, but sports to me are more about the competitiveness than the physical requirements. People compete in football, people compete in chess, people compete in League of Legends.

They're all just competitive games.

Well considering american football meatheads get scholarships only to fail miserably, I don't see anything wrong with other people getting them. "Sports" is all about money anyway.

Gaming is NOT a sport! It's a hobby!

Next there'll be cigarette scholarships and beer scholarships.

@DrKill09 Gaming is a hobby and it can also be a sport. Just like football, basketball, etc., is a sport and a hobby. The scholarship thing is ridiculous at the moment, (not a realistic goal kids should strive for) but we should accept and encourage, not deny and put down. Remember when we were kids and our teachers would ask us, "What's your favorite hobby?" and some would say video games or football, basketball, etc. Times are changing real fast :\.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I guess it depends on your point of view. I'd say I'm neutral but myself personally I don't consider NASCAR a sport yet millions of people do. I mean sure need some car knowledge and have to learn how to drive at extremely high speeds but I wouldn't consider it a "sport" in the end they just drive around in a big ass circle majority of the time.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I think you might be underestimating how difficult on the body it can be to drive that fast, for that long, in that kind of high pressure, one mistake you're done kind of situation. Don't get me wrong, I think NASCAR's boring as hell to watch, but the guys driving those cars are damn good at what they do.

The best part of these news stories is the inevitable whining and crying that all the nerds on this site give off. Seriously, 90% of the reason I click on these articles is to laugh it up watching people complain about what an "athlete" is. So many children on this site, smh

Anyway, I have a healthy and regular sex life. I am guessing you were insinuating that I must not see real girls and only talk to fictional ones? Because I don't watch sports? What an intelligent thing you have just said...
