It requires a certain amount of poise and self-acceptance to pick up a plastic axe and rock out with any of the rhythm games that have hit the market. That goes doubly so for when playing with synthetic guitars gives way to collecting pint-size dolls. Be that as it may, Activision and McFarlane Toys gave Guitar Hero fans just that option in June, saying it would be offering action figures modeled after Johnny Napalm, Lars Umlaut, Axel Steel, and the God of Rock later this year.

Now, MTV Games and Harmonix have announced their own line of figurines. However, exemplifying the rock star ethos, the Rock Band 2 makers have attempted to do the Guitar Hero dolls one better by letting gamers pick up figurines and other merchandise modeled off of their own in-game creations.

After Rock Band 2 gamers link their game data to RockBand.com, they can import shots of their in-game characters for replication as 6-inch figurines, courtesy of 3D printing specialists Z Corporation. These dolls can be posed in advance of printing, as well, by way of the Bandmate Creator on Harmonix's Web site. The figurines cost $69 apiece, a price Harmonix justified as "a great value at nearly half the price of other made-to-order figurines available on the market."

No band is complete without a merchandise booth full of branded gimcrack, and here, too, Harmonix has gamers covered. By way of the Photo Creator on RockBand.com, Rock Band 2 gamers can print personalized merchandise, including T-shirts ($29), posters ($14), bumper stickers ($4), stickers proper ($5 per sheet of six), key chains ($3), and buttons ($2).

Rock Band 2 debuted to glowing reviews on the Xbox 360 last month. The game is expected to tour onto the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, and Wii later this year.
