Revenant Just Murdered Apex Legends' Main Antagonist

The conclusion to the Kill Code animated web series ended with a shocking twist that raises several serious questions.

Respawn has released the final installment of Kill Code, a series of animated Apex Legends shorts focusing on Loba and Revenant's respective quests for revenge. Entitled Kill Code: Part 4, the final episode has some truly wild twists and turns, including the death of Torres "Duardo" Silva, the head of the Mercenary Syndicate, CEO of Silva Pharmaceuticals, and Octane's grandfather.

In the previous installment (which was a very short mini-episode called A Life For A Life), Loba and Revenant agreed to set their differences aside and team up to take on Torres Silva, who had recently acquired Revenant's source code, using it to make drastic changes to Revenant that saw him "reborn" with new abilities back in Season 18. With the release of Kill Code: Part 4, Respawn finally revealed the real reason behind those changes.

Now Playing: Apex Legends | Official Kill Code Cinematic Trailer Part 4

After secretly bugging Octane with a GPS tracker, Lifeline, Mad Maggie, Valkyrie, Loba, and Revenant tracked their fellow legend to the location where Torres was keeping Revenant's head. The plan was simple: Catch Torres off-guard, use Revenant to threaten him into submission, get ahold of the source code (which exists in the form of Revenant's very Futurama-esque human head in a jar), and let Loba destroy it, as Revenant has been programmed to be unable to harm himself. Doing so would give both legends what they wanted: Loba would avenge the murder of her family at Revenant's hands, and after 359 years of suffering, Revenant would finally be granted the peace of a true death.

Things start off quite well--the legends breach the facility without setting off any alarms, and though Octane is upset that Lifeline placed a GPS tracker on him to find his grandfather's lair, things proceed without incident for the most part. Torres tries to negotiate, but doesn't get far before Revenant uses his new Shadow Pounce ability to close the distance, wrapping a hand around Silva's throat. Once Torres has been threatened into submission, Revenant approaches his source code, lifting the glass jar containing his head from the platform it's sitting on before tossing it across the room to Loba, who begins attempting to shatter the jar with the sharpened end of her Black Market spear.

Realizing he's lost the upper hand, the scheming Silva Pharmaceuticals CEO has a tempting offer for Revenant.

"I respect a man's right to control his destiny," Torres tells the undead assassin. "I can give you that control. But what if you had… so much more?"

Revenant appears to sense his abilities strengthening, with Torres adding, "You feel it. Excellent. Your upgrades are working as designed."

Gesturing to the facility's ceiling, Torres reveals that he's built his own Revenant factory. But unlike the Revenant factories seen in previous animated Apex shorts, the hundreds of robotic shells in this factory aren't meant for Revenant to respawn into whenever his current shell is destroyed. Instead, Torres has created an army of Revenants, all of which can operate at once.

"They will fear you again," Torres tells him. "All you have to do… is live."

It seems Revenant plans to take Torres up on this offer, as the moment Loba's spear manages to shatter the jar containing Revenant's head/source code, the murderbot appears behind her, yanking her weapon from her hands and kicking her away from the jar. Once he picks it up, all of the other Revenant shells come to life at once, dropping down from their storage mechanisms on the ceiling.

"Soon, we'll have all we ever wanted, Mr. Cross," Torres says, referring to Revenant by his human last name. "Control over everything."

But Revenant has other plans."I only wanted control over me," the simulacrum replies.

Half a second later, one of the spare shells appears behind Torres and impales him on its metal arm (which seems to be Revenant's favorite finishing move). Once it drops him to the ground, a horde of more Revenant shells hop in to finish the job, impaling him him repeatedly in a manner so violent, his body isn't shown on-screen as it happens.

The Revenant shells begin escaping the facility, causing the legends to make a run for it. Lifeline makes a point of saving Octane, who is too horrified by his family member's death to make a run for it. As the legends head for their ship, the army of Revenants tries to stop them, damaging the ship and nearly causing it to crash. The legends finally manage to dislodge the robotic stowaways from the ship, and as Loba looks down at the swarming army of killer robots below them, she spies Revenant standing in the middle of them, holding his source code, and gazing back at her. A close-up shot of his faceplate shows his artificial eyes changing from their signature golden glow to a foreboding shade of red.

The implications of this episode are pretty significant. For one, the Mercenary Syndicate is now leaderless, and Apex's big bad, Torres Silva, has been vanquished. But Silva was also working closely with Cherisse Che, owner of weapons manufacturer Chevrex and mother of Lifeline. It's possible she'll step in to fill the void and take over the Syndicate herself in Silva's absence.

But even more curious is Revenant's transformation. His existence--even with the upgrades Silva gave him--is torturous, and he has made it clear that he still wishes to die. His sudden about-face combined with the ominous change to his eye color may imply that, even with Silva dead, Revenant may be able to control his army of clones, but may no longer retain control over his own actions. After all, he's been around since Season 4, and has never truly tried to kill a playable character. Suddenly sending all of his spare shells after the other legends makes little sense, as he's already gotten what he wanted: his source code. It's possible that some of the "upgrades" Silva gave him actually downgraded his free will.

Though the Kill Code has come to an end, it's clear that Revenant and Loba's story isn't over yet, and the fallout from the events of Kill Code: Part 4 will likely be felt for seasons to come. When GameSpot asked Respawn what the devs were most excited for during Season 19 previews, Apex Legends experience director Aaron Rutledge simply replied, "Season 20."
