Retail Radar: UK dates for Fable 2, Ghostbusters

Play.com let slip dates for a bunch of titles, including Fable 2, Ghostbusters, Prototype, Ninja Gaiden II, and The Bourne Conspiracy.

This weekend saw the first major UK independent consumer video game event in years, as Play.com Live took over Wembley Arena to show off upcoming titles, including Rock Band (still not out in the UK!), Killzone 2, Ghostbusters, Far Cry 2, and This is Vegas, to the public.

Everyone at the event (or everyone who could be bothered to stand in line, anyway) got a free goodie bag, which included a Play.com booklet promising 5 percent off all the games at the event. This is where it gets interesting--the booklet also has release dates, which haven't been officially announced yet for a number of high-profile upcoming titles.

Up first is Lionhead's highly anticipated role-playing game Fable 2, which is set some 500 years after the first game and promises to be bigger and better. Fable 2, according to Play.com, will be coming out in the UK on May 30 with a 16+ PEGI rating.

One of the big disappointments of the event was the distinct lack of the rumoured hands-on premiere of Ghostbusters, The Video Game. Although gamers were treated to a huge inflatable marshmallow man and the Ghostbusters car, all that was on show inside was a trailer. However, in the booklet, the game has been dated for September 26, with an age rating of 12.

Other surprises in the book include a date for Prototype, an open-world game from Radical Entertainment, set in New York and starring a shape-shifter called Alex Mercer. This sci-fi action adventure has been given the nod for June 27, although the age rating has yet to be confirmed.

Robert Ludlum's The Bourne Conspiracy is next up. The game is tied into the popular film trilogy starring Matt Damon as elite secret agent Jason Bourne, which in turn is based on the best-selling novels following Bourne's international antics. The Bourne Conspiracy is coming to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. According to Play.com, we can expect this title on June 27, though it appears to not have been age rated yet.

Ninja Gaiden II is next to be given a release date. If one is to believe Play.com, the Tecmo follow-up to the 2004 title will be with us at the end of the month, March 28, to be precise. Unsurprisingly, for a series known for its ultraviolence, it will be rated 18.

Two more games are given release dates--Iron Man (May 30, two weeks after the film is due to hit British cinemas), WALL-E (May 4, more than two months before the movie reaches UK screens), and Lego Batman gets slightly more pinned down to "sometime in September" with an age rating of 3 years old, which will no doubt disappoint those toddlers hoping to play the game.

On another Retail Radar snoop, UK supermarket chain Tesco has recently amended its games listings and finally dated Super Smash Bros. Brawl for Europeans--January 1, 2020.

Please note, while retailer listings frequently jump the gun on publishers' product announcements, they should not be taken as final confirmation of a game's release date or existence; nor should the absence of a listing be considered as proof that a game isn't coming to a given platform.

These are actually a little surprising, as I had the impression these games were still being worked on and had about another year or so to go. But hey, if it's true then that's all the better - Fable 2 and Prototype need to meet my 360.

i have a good feeling that this was a publicity stunt. 1st off if u go and watch prototype dev diary (latest one), they sounds pretty much like being some 6-9 months away from being done, and some of these other games have also been under heavy wraps so i sincerely believe any of it is true!

Woah, Fable 2 in May!?!?!? I thought for sure that'd be a holiday release. That both worries me and excites me, I don't want the game to be rushed but if it is ready I'd love to see something as big as that hit in the summer. Infact from the looks of it this year will go down in history for having good games come out pretty evenly throughout rather than twenty hit in the first week of November.

I'll believe a Lionhead release date when the disc has gone gold and started shipping. Not that there's anything wrong with that; I'm a big fan of letting games simmer until they're done and full of awesome.

Fable 2 release date = Unreliable and extremly unlikely. Mr molyneux said it will be released, "when the leaves turn brown"....

shopto.net had the May 30 release date for Fable 2 for like two months now. I guess now we know that this is actually a publicity stunt made by GS for play.com, promoting their merchandise

Running short on news stories today Gamespot? Depressingly dull event too...such an anti-climax. Easy to see why it was £6 to get in!! GRID was the only real highlight. That and Ecto 1

Fable 2 in May-June seems too good to be true. One can only hope. It's best to wait until it's given an official release date by the publisher. I take everything else as rumor.

They announced Ninja Gaiden for the 3rd of June a while back, at GDC I think, and I'm more willing to believe Itagaki, the guy in charge of the game, who came from Japan to the U.S. for that specific announcement rather than some booklet in a consumer show. << LINK REMOVED >> Plus, could you imagine that Fable would be coming in less than two months and that Microsoft's marketing machine wouldn't already be in full swing? I call the vast majority of these dates as huge bogus. They seem uninformed at best.

Fable 2 would obviously come out in u.k first. It's made by a company in ENGLAND. For those who don't know and still believe that games only come from america. (Other places can do snazzy stuff like that too now, AMAZING).

I have to agree with lightwarrior179. I think this is a load of rubbish as far as i know there has been no word on the release of Fable 2 and i can't see it out any earlier than the winter of this year. As for Ninja Gaiden II there's no way that would be released in the UK first ahead of the States and Asia it'll allmost certainly will be a world wide release.

Rubbish. I could MAYBE see Fable 2 being released in Europe before the US only because I saw the same thing happen with WipeOut Pulse; England got that game back in October 2007 and we just got it last month. As for the others, not believing it. And if it is true then I have to re-prioritize my game list.

Play.com like many retailers is usually highly innacurrate with it's dates, as can be seen by them currently giving Super Smash Bros Brawl a 30/05/2008 release date for the UK when no date has been announced by Nintendo. Their dates move more frequently than the bowels of a man who eats too much fibre. Also, having attended both days of the event, I don't believe Killzone 2 or This Is Vegas had any presence at the event, but I'm prepared to stand corrected.
