Resident Evil: Revelations 2 PS4 Patch Brings Frame Rate Closer to Xbox One's

The update improves performance ahead of the addition of online Raid mode support later this month.

Since the release of the first episode last month, players have been complaining about performance issues with the PlayStation 4 version of Resident Evil: Revelations 2. A recent update improves the PS4 game's frame rate, though it reportedly still suffers from some issues.

Digital Foundry examined how the patched version of Revelations 2 on PS4 compares with both the Xbox One and unpatched PS4 versions. It's a notable improvement, estimated to be anywhere from 10-15 percent better than the unpatched version.

However, while cinematics and certain segments run more smoothly on PS4 following the patch than on Xbox One, it's the Xbox One version that manages to usually stay closer to 60 frames per second. Digital Foundry's analysis found the lowest frame rate on PS4 following the patch was 31fps, compared with 27 in the unpatched PS4 version and 44 on Xbox One.

"Overall though, there's still the sense that Resident Evil Revelations 2 is one of the more poorly optimized titles based on the mature MT Framework engine," the report states. It notes that their high-end PC was unable to run the game at 60fps at a 1440p resolution, whereas older, better-looking MT Framework games like Resident Evil 5 and 6 could run at that frame rate even at 4K.

Revelations 2's final episode was released earlier this week alongside the full retail version. There's no word on whether Capcom has any further patches planned that will impact performance, but we do know that online support for Raid mode will be coming in a free update on March 31.

PlayStation fanboys always blame developers when a game runs better on the Xbox One over the PS4, they forget the Xbox One has 8gigs and a very capable GPU and a fast CPU

<< LINK REMOVED >> Third Party Multi-Plat games are always hit or miss if the company does not optimize it accordingly to what ever system worked on. I prefer to makes judgments dependent on First Party Games and have noticed both the Xbox One and Playstation 4 are beefy consoles, but something just seems lacking on both.

I'll tell you what's lacking on both. Performance. They are not beefy consoles. We're not even 2 years into the life cycle and developers are having to cut all sorts of corners to make the games playable. Low res, dumbed down textures, and in some cases that still isn't enough. I love my ps4, but if sony and ms don't at least announce a new console by next year there gaming departments will die.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Games are also getting ambitious and pushing specs. Did Unity really need to have so many NPC's on screen to the point it made the game suffer because it was pushing to much? Also the move to online with so many games is having an effect, many of the issues this gen have been related to games adding an online component.

<< LINK REMOVED >> ? I prefer Xbox and, the developers are clearly the problem. Read the article carefully. DF says the game is poorly optimized.

Played through the entire game on survival, now going back playing countdown mode, played countless matches of raid mode, all on PS4 and I never encountered a single frame rate drop or anything worth mentioning. Time for you ''gamers'' to get your priorities straight and get gud.

Well I hate to sound biased but since we pretty could see Crapcom being in One's bed kinda not surprised they focused on optimizing the One over the PS4 til a later date. From what is going on at Konami they will bed the One also since Hideo is leaving them. I mean that point two previously iconic developers are now K mart brand game makers.

Lazy development. The systems have been out almost a year and a half. They should be used to the new hardware by now and able to optimize better. The graphics on the PS4 version are sharper and brighter but, that's pointless with frame rates in the 20's.

Hilarious! When the PS4 outperforms an XB1 version, it's because of the superior hardware...

Yet when the XB1 version performs better, it's because the devs are lazy. Even after they further release a patch to optimize it further.

It's beyond obvious that the devs have spent far more time trying to get this game running smoothly on the PS4, and the XB1 version still runs it better. Some engines just work better with certain hardware. It's as simple as that. It's the same reason why certain games run better on the PS4, not because of the PS4's mega hardware.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Did you even read the article? Other developers have been able to make games run better on the system. "Resident Evil Revelations 2 is one of the more poorly optimized titles based on the mature MT Framework engine" Ergo, bad development.

If it's due to a poor engine, then it should run poorly on both systems. I simply stated that some engines prefer certain hardware.

<< LINK REMOVED >> lol, you clearly have no idea what you are talking about. The engine is irrelevant here. The game still has to be optimized for the hardware regardless of engine. The PS4 is capable of running beefier games at higher frame rates. Again, I prefer the X1 over the PS4 but, I'm not stupid enough to believe the PS4 can't run any game as good as or better than the X1. Take your fanboy glasses off and maybe you'll see a little more clearly.

No, it's you that clearly has little knowledge of how this stuff works.

Poor optimization could very well have been the cause for the poor performance on the PS4 version. The patch was introduced to bump up performance by... You guessed it, optimizing the PS4 version further. The fact that it still runs better on the XB1 should lead one to believe that the engine used here, just prefers the XB1's hardware setup. Konami's Fox engine for example, works far better with the PS4's hardware than it does with the XB1's. EA's Frostbite, doesn't really shine on either of them.

As far as you believing that the PS4 can run any game better than the XB1. Many games already do. DA Inquisition, Evolve, AC, GTA 5, along with a few others have ran better on the XB1, as far as gameplay and framerate go. How so many fanboys claim that a PS4 version of a game looks superior when it has absolutely no AF is beyond me.

You should perhaps do a bit more research into this if you're interested, and stop relying in fanboy posts on gaming articles as your main source of information. You'll find that the PS4 often offers a better resolution compared to the XB1, but is lacking everywhere else.

<< LINK REMOVED >> lol, whatever. I guess your fanboyism trumps my degree in Engineering. You win. The game runs poorly on PS4 because of its hardware. Guess I have to go back to the University and ask for a refund. I clearly have no knowledge of the hardware I fix on a daily basis.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Also the PC version has been suffering frame rate issues as well. High end rigs have not bee able to achieve the frame rate they should. I suppose its their hardware as well right? No way its the developer. So are you saying that MT Framework Engine was specifically designed for Xbox? Or maybe it has something to do with the port? Naw couldn't be that. The Xbox One is better than a high end PC. Its all so clear now.

I'm not claiming that the performance is due to the PS4's hardware, or PC's for that matter. I merely stated that some game engines perform better on certain hardware setups. Most of the yime, it's unintended. As I stated before, the FOX engine is a good example of this. MG and Konami's soccer game (forgot the name. PEI?) perform better on the PS4 by a good margin, because the FOX engine just doesn't work well with the XB1's setup. No matter how much you optimize it, it will simply not run as well as the other. That doesn't mean that the devs were lazy though.

I'm not gonna lie. The person playing on the X1 was the superior shooter. Well placed shots. Nicely done.
