Report: Samsung making VR headset, plans to beat Oculus and Sony to market

Sources say tech giant behind Galaxy phones will announce the device this year and it'll be less expensive than Oculus Rift or Project Morpheus.

The mobile division of technology giant Samsung is working on a virtual reality device that will be announced this year, sources with knowledge of the matter told technology blog Engadget, which also recently revealed the Halo: Master Chief Collection.

The tipsters said that unnamed developers already have prototype versions of the headset, which are reportedly powered by Galaxy devices. The final consumer model, on the other hand, is believed to run on a next-generation Galaxy smartphone and/or tablet.

Samsung's rumored virtual reality device is said to mirror the Oculus Rift or Sony's Project Morpheus in form factor. It's believed to have an OLED screen that is as good or better than the latest Oculus Rift development kit. What's unclear, however, is how the headset will sync up with your phone or tablet, and if it will require a separate camera to track depth, as both the Oculus Rift and Project Morpheus do.

According to the Engadget report, Samsung is not only aiming to beat the Oculus Rift and Project Morpheus headsets to market, but also to sell their device for less than the competition. What's the purpose of Samsung's virtual reality device? According to Engadget's sources, it's being made to support Android games, though a list of titles is not available.

Samsung said: "Samsung doesn't comment on rumor and speculation."

It's worth noting that Oculus Rift for almost a year now has been talking about its ambition to bring virtual reality support to mobile devices, though it remains unclear how this will work. Facebook purchased Oculus VR, maker of Oculus Rift, earlier this year for $2 billion.

Where are the real games? Sony hasn't showed anything but demos.

There are actual games, playable right now, available for the Rift.

I love how some of you worship Sony so much that you actually bend reality in your mind to convince yourselves Sony is the best at everything.

I plan on getting Sony's headset for my PS4 too when it comes out, but be honest, there are more developers making games on the Rift and the Rift was announced almost two years earlier and has had dev kits out for much longer.

Cool; unless it works with my consoles I won't even notice it. Even then, Sony has a lot to prove with the Morpheus anyway.

"It was really just another page from the Samsung playbook, used many times before: When another company introduces a breakthrough technology, muscle in with less expensive versions of the same product. And the strategy had worked, helping the Samsung Group to grow from almost nothing into an international behemoth."

Enough with the VR. I already lost interest in VR. Now watch LG, and others big companies start making VR.

Well, at least there seems to be more and more investment in VR - which means stronger R&D - which means better quality and lower prices.

Without the games this will fail. If Samsung was smart they would also support PCs. An Android phone/tablet exclusive VR won't sell good. But it will be funny to see Apple fanboys get defensive about the iPhone not having VR.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I don't think so. I don't see a practical application in the near future, but imagine in a decade from now when cell phones have GPUs strong enough to virtualize a desktop environment, or something similar to a large, three-monitor setup, and instead of of browsing the internet on a tiny phone screen, you can navigate

I do agree that without immense software support, like Oculus and Sony will almost undoubtedly see, their VR HMD efforts will very likely be stifled. I can see them maybe investing in video streaming technologies that allow people to watch video not unlike netflix, hulu, or amazon prime, in virtual environments, and virtualized IMAX 3D venues etc.

I have my doubts as well, but there are possibilities, especially for further future applications.

Also, with VR, I'm worried about the effect it will have on peoples ability to consume alcohol whilst gaming. Could be dangerous?

I think this whole thing is BS. Samsung is battling Google Glass. They can't really compete in the console or PC VR market -- the only place that VR really makes sense. Mobile games work because they are mobile, get rid of that mobility due to VR and it's dead. Think OUYA is going to explode with the right VR headset? C'mon...

Full cover VR headset connected to a mobile device is a bit of a stretch.

@bunchanumbers @ThrashMatt26I disagree. Right now the best ecosystem specific to games is Sony.

OR was better as a strict third party, but with Facebook in the mix, it'll be a cold day in hell before I give them money -- unless they make pigs fly? And... Facebook isn't known for allowing "options"

<< LINK REMOVED >> You presume much, and blow the FB acquisition out of proportion. Huge companies with immense capital do these things; they diversify and expand, and buy other companies of value. Google owns space program rockets, and some of the best robotics companies out there, as well as half the stuff you use on the internet. Microsoft owns tons of enterprise AND consumer software, and much of it still operates almost completely independently, except with the added stipulation that those acquired companies now have more resources than ever before, with literally no currently existing drawbacks.

"Facebook isn't known for allowing 'options'"

Well, Facebook is actually a rather large proponent of open-source solutions. I can honestly say that, after thinking about for a while, and after I realized that Oculus didn't just "cash-out" with the acquisition, FB is one of the better, larger companies to make such an acquisition. They're a 100bil company that absolutely NEEDS to expand beyond the slowly sinking social media website ship.

Then, of course, there are the data-mining principles that people love to hate on, but I find it a bit strange how selective they are in their hate, when they're quick to laud other companies who are just as guilty.

<< LINK REMOVED >> VR, at this capacity, both as a compelling experience and with consumer accessibility, is a soon-to-be entirely new medium of entertainment. It is a bit narrow-minded to assume that Samsung, as a conglomerate, would limit its prospective VR endeavors to strictly mobile applications.

I do somewhat share the sentiment that, at least in early stages/years, they might not produce the most comprehensive experience, software, hardware and third-party support-wise, but that doesn't mean that their particular VR experiences have to be limited to our cell phones.

After all, they are a huge producer of televisions. I can think of at least one way that they might be able to tap into this market: they are massive producers of televisions, yeah? Well, an important component of VR is graphics processing and rendering. Current VR devices do not address this themselves, and leave it up to the consumer. If samsung were willing to possibly build, into their TVs, relatively bare bones, but appropriately capable GPUs, they could produce a television that came bundled with video viewing software, not dissimilar to Riftmax Theater, or other otherworldly experiences like viewing 2D content in a 3D virtual environment, like at the edge of a space nebula, or an evening, moonlit sky of clouds and stars, much like similar applications being made now for the development versions of the Rift.

Come on, man. There are tons of ways for companies with resources to capitalize off of, and produce compelling content for, virtual reality.

If there are not any good games immediately at release of any of these VR devices, then it does not matter who sells what at what price.
