Red Dead Redemption, Enslaved, God of War lead IAA nominees

Rockstar Western leads the pack with nine nods for Interactive Achievement Awards, Namco Bandai action game and Sony's mythological trilogy caper secure six nominations each.

If it's an honor just to be nominated, no game has been honored more by the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences this year than Red Dead Redemption. The AIAS announced the finalists for its 14th annual Interactive Achievement Awards, giving Rockstar San Diego's open-world Western shooter nominations in nine different categories--including Game of the Year--more than any other title.

Red Dead Redemption could be adding to its trophy case.
Red Dead Redemption could be adding to its trophy case.

Red Dead Redemption has already been named GameSpot's 2010 Game of the Year and was among the nominees for the Game Developers Choice Awards' top prize. It also garnered IAA nominations for a swath of categories, including Outstanding Innovation in Gaming, as well as Outstanding Achievement nods for animation, game direction, sound design, and more.

Rockstar San Diego's latest isn't the only game with a chance to take home a posse of IAA awards. Namco Bandai's action game Enslaved: Odyssey to the West and God of War III also scored a half-dozen nominations each, with the latter title staking its own claim to the Game of the Year honor. Other nominees for the AIAS Game of the Year include Treyarch's best-selling Call of Duty: Black Ops, BioWare's sci-fi role-playing game Mass Effect 2, and the breakout iPad gaming hit Angry Birds HD. (The standard version of Angry Birds for the iPhone was actually released in December 2009.)

The Interactive Achievement Awards will be presented Thursday, February 10, during a ceremony at the D.I.C.E. Summit in Las Vegas. A complete list of categories and nominees follows below.

"Red dead could have let me make my own Cowboy" HAHA what a horrible idea, the game would've been crap. Red Dead always gets bashed here. Why do gamespot users have such bad taste?

Red Dead could have been dope. It isn't. Could have let me make my own cowboy. It didn't. Could have let me run my own farm. It didn't. Could have let me swim...It didn't. Could have let me solve quests my own way. It didn't. Give me the world of Red Dead mixed with Mass Effect's or Fallout's choices with a little bit of Harvest Moon. As is Red Dead is a crappy game in a really great game world. Red Dead is forever Meh...Thumbs up if you agree...Thumbs down if you agree...

I don't know why everybody has a hardon for Limbo. I enjoy artsy games, but Limbo was frustrating and boring as hell. Walk 10 feet, die. Duck instead of jump.. got it... walk 20 feet, die. Ok, the next obstacle is a move backwards, jump over pit... walk 30 feet die... it's like a game of Simon only less interesting.

@JangoF-76 The best games focus on gameplay and not storyline. Perfect Dark and Goldeneye on N64 had virtualy no good story line but the gameplay and the worlds you shot people in made the games sooo good. Red Dead Redemption was the best game released this year.

@Vozlov I think RDR wasn't nominated for story because, although it is a great story, it's quite derivative and not terribly original - it borrows heavily from pretty much every classic western movie ever made. Don't get me wrong, I loved RDR and it was definitely my choice for game of the year, but I have to admit other games had more innovative/original/intriguing storylines.

Enslaved was a game i had little interest in until i tried the demo and then i was sold but i had other games to play coming so i waited and then i saw it for 40 and had to get it and loved every moment of Enslaved and i would suggest it to all of you to at least try the demo you just might like it.

Yeah Alan Wake gets more than a small nod but an actual award or two! And as for Red Dead have been playing it recently and its a great game but not game of the year. Although I would like to get my hands on LA Noire.

Awards mean nothing until they become honest.....none of these are really honest, it's a joke, an insult to the collective intelligence. This is the same reason I ignore film, music and TV awards.....

Don't care about this award ceremony after I realized its a pile of BS. How did Valkyria Chronicles II or Infinity Blade beat out MGS: Peace Walker? Which is probably the most complete MGS game to date. With almost everything except Wi Fi. And then Medal of Honor getting a award for visual design. What a joke. There are more deserving games of that nomination slot.

For me, Mass Effect has to grab the best story accolade. It still constitutes the best "Sci-fi" experience I've had (bar "Surface detail by Ian Banks :) ) in the whole of 2010 (whether movie, TV or game).

@Wylen0 Alan Wake has won or been nominated in a lot of categories this year. Not sure how sales did but it was not overlooked by these gaming award places. It was a great game and hopefully a sequel will follow.

I thought Heavy Rain would get a nomination for this: Outstanding Achievement in Game Direction // But they did make up for it on other great categories. I guess I understand, the plot holes, and few shortcomings also made me not go back to it after finishing it. I actually enjoyed Indigo Prophecy better.

GoW III took me to places in gaming i didnt realise were possible yet, awesome game. also enjoyed Enslaved, which i feel is heading down the cult following road. Heavy Rain although i found myself getting bored somtimes it really did trigger my emotions in other parts, (mission accomplished guys). Red Dead, what can i say but pure involving enjoyment, a masterpiece of gaming, roll on LA Noir guys for surely one of the better games of this year too. And errrrrr MoH did sound good though lol...

Outstanding Achievement in Game Play Engineering - Red dead redemption? Outstanding Innovation in Gaming - Red dead redemption? I'd agree with the visuals, perhaps the online play, and perhaps sound, and why wasn't it even nominated for story? But what else do I see... Gameplay? Innovation? I'd lol but.... damn.

Glad to see Alan Wake get some recognition. It was the first game ive played in along time that i didn't take out of my disk tray until i had beaten it. Enslaved was also quite amazing. I have angry birds for my Itouch and i just don't see the appeal in it, i got bored of it very fast. Edit. Also for those of you that enjoy gritty FPS's i really recommend trying out Metro 2033 it had it's share of problems but it was a really enjoyable experience

WTF, Angry Birds? While I am all for that they recognize the rise the rise of mobile gaming, Angry Birds is just not a good game. It is a knock off of a million older flash games with similar gameplay, and not a very good one at that, as the controls are imprecise and consequently most of the gameplay is based on luck. Just because a game sells a lot doesn't make it a good game. If they wanted to showcase the rise of mobile gaming they should have nominated something with actual quality like GTA:Chinatown Wars or Infinity Blade, or at least just a quality casual game like Plants vs. Zombies or Cut the Rope.

@Shoaka I'm sorry, but I don't agree with that. It's primarily an action-adventure (light on the adventure) with heavy story, not much else. When you're not shooting, you're talking or moving around a map with some silly goal. I love the game, but you don't have the option to take things slow if you want. Red Dead has a larger audience and allows more freedom for the player.

I'm really glad Enslaved is getting some recognition... the dynamic, voice acting, and facial animations were just fantastic...it was one of the first games besides Uncharted series where the characters weren't dead behind the eyes... I'd love to see them beat out one or two of the big guys.

@RadicalToenail It should not be implied that Mass Effect 2 is a hardcore game of any genre, it is an rpg yes, but not much of one. It is enjoyable by lots of people just like Red Dead Redemption. That said, Mass Effect 2 was by far the best game of 2010.
