Razer Offering $25,000 Reward for Information About CES Prototype Theft

Two of Razer's triple-monitor laptops were stolen from the Las Vegas show.

Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan has shared new details on the theft of two prototypes from the company's booth at the Consumer Electronics Show this month.

Writing on Facebook, Tan started off by clarifying that the two stolen prototypes were both Project Valerie laptops, not the Project Ariana smart projector device. Previously, it was unclear as to which prototypes specifically were taken. Tan also shared a timeline, saying the laptops were nabbed at around 4 PM PT on Sunday, January 8 from Razer's booth on the show floor.

Razer is offering up a $25,000 reward for people who submit new information that leads to the identification, arrest, and conviction those responsible for the theft. $25,000 is the maximum reward value; it could be lower, dependent on the value of the information.

If you have information on the theft, you can submit it to: legal@razerzone.com.

After the theft, Razer said it was working with CES show management and law enforcement to discuss next steps. Tan said that Razer takes theft "very seriously," going on to say that the company has not ruled out "industrial espionage."

"Penalties for such crimes are grievous and anyone who would do this clearly isn't very smart," Tan said.

For lots more on Project Valerie, check out GameSpot's preview from CES above. You can get a closer look at Project Ariana through the video below. Bear in mind that Project Valerie and Project Ariana are only concepts, so they don't have price points or release dates; they may never be released.

In 2011, thieves broke into Razer's office and stole prototypes for laptops that would become the company's Razer Blade, according to GameSpot sister site CNET.

You'd think that an event like CES where hundreds of thousands of dollars of products are on display that there would be amazing security.

@computernoises: You people are so nit-picky about everything, from typos to non game articles(ok its GAMESpot), to punctuation pretty much everything.

Need to stop getting annoyed by everything, its not healthy :)

Well that last point is basically now moot, someone will surely release it.

Your chances of finding one of these two for sale are still better than finding a NES Classic Edition at Gamestop.

Only thing this reward is accomplishing is boosting the prototype price even more, am surprised they were so naive to not even put some GPS into them if they were so valuable.

How do they even pick it up? The side monitors were basically glued on and the hinges were fake. It would fall apart.

@triplebullet: People who were at CES and have written and talked about it have mentioned that the extra screens don't slide in or fold in. They have fake hinges slapped on and some of them were told that the extra screens would literally fall off if they tried to pick up the prototype. The monitors need to be disassembled.

Why would anyone steal that? It overheats so much you can cook an egg on it. It was a cute gimmick but won't work for very long.

@repulsive44552: It was junk though. It just barely worked well enough to be on a show floor.

@saturatedbutter: I doubt who ever stole it took it just to pawn it off for a few bucks or for personal use for that matter, this is actually surprisingly common in the tech industry. It could have easily been a competitor.

@saturatedbutter: Well, it's worth Razor posting a $25k bounty to get them back, so clearly there's something valuable about these laptops.

@Mogan: Let's not be silly here. Razer isn't paying anyone $25,000 for information on getting this back.

"A $25,000 reward is being offered for original information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of a criminal suspect. Razer, in its sole discretion, will decide who is entitled to a reward and in what amount. Razer may pay only a portion of the maximum reward offered."

There is 0% chance Razer will give out the full 25k. I doubt they would even give 1k.

@saturatedbutter: Cynicism isn't really a basis for an argument. : \

Razer said they'd give $25k to get these things back, so they're either willing to pay that much for them, or they're willing to lie about it and risk upsetting folks; either way, that indicates that they don't think the things they made were junk.

@Mogan: Are you daft? Read it again. At no point do they promise to give 25k to whoever delivers information leading to an arrest. It's an "up to" deal.

@saturatedbutter: Which means they are, presumably, willing to pay as much as $25k to recover these things. You can spin this all you want, but it would appear that Razer believes their prototypes are far from worthless.
