Rainbow Six Siege's Astonishing Comeback

Two years and 25 million players later.

In December of 2015, Ubisoft Montreal's Rainbow Six Siege released to little fanfare. It was a good game, but it relied too heavily on multiplayer modes for many players, its map supply was sparse, and servers weren't always reliable. All in all, it was a mediocre release.

Cut to two years later, and it's hard to believe we've been playing the same game. Ubisoft Montreal has supported its multiplayer shooter throughout the past 24 months, adding content, revamping servers, and listening to player feedback. The player count has increased exponentially, reaching 25 million with the recent release of Operation White Noise, the last content drop of Siege's second year.

Now Playing: Rainbow Six Siege's Astonishing Comeback

It is, to say the least, one of modern AAA gamings' biggest comebacks. Games such as Destiny 2, Star Wars: Battlefront 2, Warframe, and Overwatch follow the ethos of "games-as-a-service," to varying effects. But Rainbow Six Siege is perhaps the best proof that this model can work.

In the video above, Mike Mahardy takes a deep dive into Siege, exploring the various ways it flew under the mainstream radar for so long, how it improved over the past two years, how it supported faithful players, and rewarded players who value complex gameplay.

And would have a much larger player base if ubisoft rolled out servers to other regions too, sooo many people would like to play this game but cant because of ping issues having to connect to servers half way around the world.

Nice video.

I think it''s the same case for my favorite game, Rocket league.

But for Rocket League, the case was a bit different as it was helped by being free on PS Plus at least for some months after launch.

I really like to see videos like this for RB6: Siege. This is honestly my favorite game to play and it has been since it launched. Theres really not another game out there like it. I have a group of friends that I play with, and we've played other games here and there through this games life cycle, but we always have still played Siege. We will continue to play this game too since it consistently adds content. Can't wait for the new mode we will get to try out next season.

I wish people would stop saying "exponentially." Often when people say "it increased exponentially", they mean it increased geometrically. As Rainbow Six Siege hasn't become an intergalactic sensation, I'm sure the increase in players may be dramatic, but it's unlikely to be increasing exponentially for any substantial amount of time.

@Verenti: Actually it could just mean that its growing quicker/faster and faster ... exponentially doesn't necessarily have to be geometrically! if something was growing in speed and not size it could still be exponential technically.

Without a Single Player game, without proper terrorist hunt with AI squad, solo tango hunt, bomb disarm, hostage rescue and other in depth story mode campaign, the game is shit and crap to me.

I'll skip R6 Seige and the franchise is dead to me (despite buying EVERY single game on release day before). I don't care about MP, 5-min MP sessions nor the DLC crap with microtransactions and season pass nonsense it has become

@ltjohnnyrico: I played up to gold and quit due to the insta-head-shot boom within a millisecond external scrip aim-bot users. So many cheaters. Ubi cracked down a bit on them but appears to have stopped.

@fanirama: While single player pwnage is nice and all, this is the first time things can actually feel truly tactical. Granted AI is always so-so level, they might be braindead and predictable but at least they play by the rules. With people either you have jackasses, or you have well playing team that makes up and executes brilliant tactics.

Siege is well worth the experimentation from Ubi. They hit something special here.

You're really missing out on a fantastic game if you haven't played it.

@BeanFart1: I've played and when my enemies head doesn't show up on my screen, yet kill cam shows he can see me clearly, means that there are some major issues with the game. My friends said it has gotten better but that problem still exists. I'm guessing its a server tick time issue or some kind of weird latency mechanic, but I will not touch it until that is fixed. Also, don't like that you have to buy operators and you just can't equip what you want.

@jodomar: I'm playing R6S since its launch date and I agree with you that it was really problematic at the beggining. I will comment your last 2 sentences and then I will get to the real gamebreaker that you mention. You don't actually have to buy any operator. You can get them by using points as you play but even so you can't choose more than 1 at the time and the team cant have more than 5 so its up to playstyle in the most cases. The reason that you can't equip what you want is to have some ballance in the synergy mix of defenders/attackers/specials.

Now... The thing you mention was really an issue. It happend something similar to me recently on the latest patch but after I looked the replay closer, I noticed that it wasnt a mistake at all but just realistic.

I was Valkyrie and we were playing at the consulate map. I opened a hole on a window barricade on the top floor in order to get some view on the garage entrance below. I didn't stay much at the window because I didn't know if the attackers heard the window breaking or how many of them were below. I took a closer look then since none fired just to check. At that very moment I got a headshot from Glaz. I said: Where did this come from? On the replay I noticed that Glaz saw my forhead clearly because I was highlighted yellow with his special but I didn't see him because my eyes were still covered by the barricade. You can see that different situations can happen that can be both frustrating and/or funny.

However yesterday, when I was playing at the themepark map as a defender, I noticed that Fuze came in through a window rappeling. I knew he was next to me and it was just a wall between us but not exactly where he was camping. Waiting patiently, I surpsringly saw his shield through the wall! This happend in a ranked match! I ran through the door while aiming him and I got a kill. Now this is a serious issue but the game is still really fun and ubisoft have shown that they are continuously fixing such issues. I think you will love it if you dedicate some time to it in order to learn how it works. The rest is up to your skill and your imagination. The gameplay is really flexible giving you countless oportunities even while outnumbered. Hell, I won a round while 4vs1 yesterday!

Every time I hear the phrase, or anything alluding to the concept of, "games a service", I get a chill down my spine.

Very few publishers have the desire to support their community, and very few developers the ambition and capability to do so. It's a promise they generally can't fulfill, and might as well be synonymous with "early release".

I got this game a long time ago for cheap and never got around to playing it. Now I'm too intimidated to start it. heh

Doesn't look like an easy game to just jump in on after people have been playing it for years.

@TheLoCoRaven: Same problem for any shooter.

It depends at what "pace" you jump into it.

If you wanna "try" it every now and then, you might get owned and have no fun but if you can invest some time into it you will get better at it rather fast and won't be shamed for too long.

(Then again that's the same for any shooter at all)

@silv3rst0rm: I'm too scatterbrained with what games I play. I jump from game to game constantly. I can hold my own at most shooters, not the best on the teams but at least somewhere in the middle usually. I'll try it out some at some point, but I feel like the mechanics would take me awhile to learn since its not just run n gun.

@TheLoCoRaven: No run 'n gun is why I like this game. No Red Bull/Monster Energy drinking idiots double jumping across your screen.

Few mechanics that'll help;

- Use a headset
- Leaning around corners might get you a kill
- A little flanking goes a long way

I bought this game a week ago and I love it! I was planning to buy either Star Wars Battlefield 2 or COD WW2 because I wanted to get back into a multiplayer shooter. Because of the backlash of both these games, I ended up with Siege. Couldn't be happier.

This game doesn't punish you for beeing late to the party. No need to buy map packs or season passes. Other players aren't decked out with so many upgrades that you feel overpowered because you are at a lower level. There is some getting used to the pace and different Operators.

I only dislike the fact that it takes so long to unlock these Operators. Small tip for beginners; play trough the 'tutorial' missions first. This way you can do some Operator test driving and you'll be able to unlock a couple of them.

@f1r3starter: Unlocking all operators without spending any real money will take more than year if you have starter edition fyi. So its a little bit "pay to win" unless you have been playing since the beginning. But season 2 edition (which gives you everything up to current build) is frequently discounted for like $40 which is not that bad imo. Normal Price is $80 though which is a bit steep but no need to spend full price with all the discounts.

@mundus: that’s not true. I have 3 accounts that I play siege on. depending on what you do and how you do it, I unlocked all the ops fairly quickly. Also it’s definitely not pay to win it’s not like you get an advantage for unlocking an operator.. wtf

@restatbonfire: Starter edition is 12500 per operator 25000 for DLC. If you have standard edition thats a whole nother story

@mundus: "pay to win" is streching it. I don't feel that the Operators they added are generally OP compared to the original ones. You can argue that some Operators are more usefull than others, but I don't feel I'm less likely to win if I don't own a 'new' Operator.

It is a nice game indeed only the graphics are totally crap. They should remake this game using a modern engine and stop using the engine they used for the previous Rainbow games.

"news" is like 3-4 months late? Ok. But you are wrong Gamespot - game is losing people during last months + ABSOLUTELY STUPID skins and cosmetics are turning fans away. Rainbow Six is about to transform into asian f2p alike shooter with special-ass-girls running around in tight patns.

@g4m1ngon: Says the guy with no skins probably. All jokes aside, the skin is cosmetic and does not affect gameplay. If it's stupid looking, the better reason to win the game to show the other players "Stupid skins don't matter." PoE, Overwatch and CS go follow the same financial decision of cosmetics.
