PS5 / Xbox Series X: Platinum Games Studio Head Clarifies "More Of The Same" Comment

The head of Platinum Games responds to the "backlash" over his comments about the next-generation consoles.

73 Comments

In 2019, the head of Nier: Automata and Bayonetta developer Platinum Games, Atsushi Inaba, said he was not all that impressed by the next generation of consoles from Sony and Microsoft. He said they offered "more of the same," and those comments led to some debate and discussion, particularly after the enthusiastic praise we've heard from several other developers up to this point. However, he isn't backing down.

Inaba has now clarified his comments, telling Video Games Chronicle that his original words led to "a little bit of backlash" and the perception that he was a snob. Inaba now says he's excited by the fact that the new consoles will allow developers to "do more" as it relates to graphics and technology. However, he stands by his estimation that the leap from the PS4/Xbox One era to the PS5/Xbox Series X era won't be as dramatic as the shift that occurred years ago during previous console transitions.

Now Playing: Sony Confirms PS5 Event For Next Week - GS News Update

"If you think back to the generation between Super Nintendo and PlayStation, and how we went from pixel art to 3D polygons… nobody could have ever imagined that a few years prior," Inaba said. "When that stuff started coming out people were just blown away: they weren't ready for it, they weren't anticipating it… it was just so new."

The latest console generations, by comparison, leave something to be desired, Inaba said.

"I feel that the announcements that we've had for recent consoles generations, while all good and interesting, and of course I'm happy for us as developers to have better technology to work on… it's a 'perceivable' future," he said. "There's not the extreme surprise or the unexpected quality that I felt from the leap to previous consoles. Now I see the announcements and I think, 'Oh, that's cool' and then the next minute I think, 'Hmmm… what should I watch on Netflix tonight?'"

Inaba clarified that this is only his personal opinion, and that--from an industry level--the launch of the PS5 and Xbox Series X is "all very promising." He also mentioned that Sony and Microsoft have yet to fully reveal their new consoles, so it's possible the machines will end up wowing him.

"We haven't seen everything from next-gen at this point, I think, and it's still very likely that there could be a quality like that in these consoles that’s going to kind of be a game-changer, that's going to change how games could be played," he said. "And if that is the case, then maybe they'll blow me away. So I don't want to sound like, 'Hey, I know everything about the new consoles and they're boring.' But with the information that I have now, I haven't seen any extremely big surprises."

Inaba also called out the Nintendo Switch as an example of a platform-holder trying something bold and new. "The Nintendo Switch was very groundbreaking in how it was able to just to take a home console and make it portable," he said. "It's something that you hadn't seen a lot of people doing before: it took this wall, that perhaps a lot of people didn't know even existed, and broke it down."

Platinum's latest release is The Wonderful 101: Remastered for Nintendo Switch, which got a 4/10 in GameSpot's review. Among the developer's upcoming games is Bayonetta 3 for the Nintendo Switch. The studio is also working on Project G.G., which is a hero-based action game.

I think it is kinda obvious that it is impossible to make more than just incremental jumps in graphics fidelity at this point, and that jumps were higher when moving from stick figures to 3D stick figures.

but hey, true innovation is making a portable console that has half the power of my smartphone... the switch is not innovative, and if it didn't have the amazing games only nintendo can make, it wouldn't sell

@MigGui:

you be surpise. we could do uncanny valley level of graphics. its possible. but when you apply real world physics into a game... that when you have to knock down the graphic.

their a reason why it takes super computer to do some basic physic test.

@joey2010: this Gen for sure, as they just put out mid-level PCs last go around...but with PS5/Series X, looks to be PS3/360 like again where it would take a monster PC to keep up for the first couple years.

There will probably be a lot of games that are basically just slightly nicer looking at launch, especially for the Series X, but with the SSD standard on both, should give us some crazy games in 2021/2022.

FF7R Part 2 will be insane in...probably 2025 sadly.

@joey2010: PC may be next gen, but we are hardly getting to play the best games this gen.

I mostly play on PC, but I also realize that the PC platform is: always getting games years later, not at all, or when multiplat launched- they were designed for consoles and- poorly ported to pc.

Also the best game of 8th gen was console only, Horizon zero dawn. Worth the cost of a console for sure. So .. PC may be next gen, but we are hardly getting to play the best games this gen.

@blkmac: Ive played games for decades, preferred games like along the line of RPG's to tactical. But to me, horizon just hit all the buttons just right, and anyone i know says the same, best game of 8th gen. Feels very much like playing Morrowind 3 or Kotor for the first time. Good variety of enemies, weapons, terrain, and if I could complain... story pacing could be tighter with an open world. Even though it came out early 2017, still holds up very well.

If not the best of 8th gen, easily top five.

Perfectly legit assetion.

Some games on base PS4 already look gorgeous. RDR 2, Last of us 2, Horizon Zero Awn, Monster Hunter World, Modern Warfare 2019... And those cellshading games that were pretty already at their top level with DBZ FighterZ, Persona games, Valkyria games, Nier Automata...

The thing is, I think, is that now there will be even more games to have superior visuals. Not only AAA. Already Hellblade Senua's Sacrifice showed that small teams can also pull off amazing graphics.

I’ve never understood why console manufacturers are so obsessed with resolution. On PC, you can play literally any game at 4K with very high FPS if you set all the graphics settings to low. Therefore, resolution doesn’t define how good something looks. And Framerate can be just as misleading because lowering graphics quality always increases frame rate. Even today when you compare the same games across Xbox One X, PS4 Pro, and a PC, usually the PC has noticeable improvements because the console ports are focusing on making resolution as high as possible and ignoring graphical features. What’s the point of high resolution if you are going to reduce particle effects, volumetric lighting, and remove shadows? While I have no doubt the new consoles are gonna be very powerful, I can’t help but feel like they are putting too much priority on resolution. Hopefully developers won’t be as focused on resolution as much as Microsoft and Sony.

@gamer112696: I do think that resolution is important. I've seen a 4K patch make an old game look fresh because it's not a blurry mess and razor sharp. I do think pushing beyond 4K at this juncture is overly ambitious. We need a standard resolution for consoles to catch up with. 1080p wasn't even a standard resolution for Xbox One's base console, so hopefully we can keep 4K being a standard so console hardware while piling on other goodies.

8K is a nice dream, but already with 4K we're seeing that unless you're sitting close to your tv, and believe me I'm a details person, 4K isn't as impactful as say 1080p was from 42 to 55 inches. 8K screens would need to be fairly massive to really observe all the benefits of 8K resolution and would take up unnecessary horsepower. I do think 4K is fine as a standard for next gen, but I think it'd be cool to see developers give graphics options to select to have the game run in certain quality and performance settings so you can choose what you want.

@thelostscribe: @gamer112696:

I play on a 2k ips HDR monitor at 75mhz and it is awesome. But it is not the resolution it is the games. GAMES.

The new things consoles are bringing this 9th gen is quality of life improvements, and some amazing new tech to the platform as well. Hopefully allow the new AI based on ray tracing, much like light and sound. (fewer stupid enemies and maybe, just maybe smarter allies). Also some incredible new architecture crunching, where bullets, collisions, and terrain act more and more like they should. And of course resolution allows all of this to just look prettier.

But, resolution doesn't matter that much to most people. Not even me, as i just finished FF 7 remake, and it was amazing. Between, that game and God of War - it doesn't matter the framerate, resolutions, etc it was all about the best games ever. But on that, I am playing Valkyrie Chronicles on my PC instead of consoles because m.2 pcie x4 ssd obliterate load times. And IPS screen color, it just hard to live without.

9th gen may just bring all of this together, gonna be great.

@jenovaschilld: I would have agreed with you just a few years ago, but after seeing what the original Xbox games with 4K patches(Conkers Bad Fur Day reloaded is one that shines), resolution makes a massive impact on these games and the replayability of them on newer screens as well. Oh course the gameplay is the most important thing to making a good game. However not suffering through a blurry image is becoming very much a preference of mine.

@Terminator95: not sure if people would feel salty...just a wrong statement when you say "value". Sony/Microsoft may be selling these new consoles at a loss for the first half year or more. Not sure any PC or component manufacturers doing that at the moment.

To each their own, but, I guess only downside here is buying a console means you need an additional thing in your house where with PC you just need the one? maybe?

He's not wrong. As generations go on the leaps in Graphic Fidelity will be less and less. That's not saying there won't be improvements but won't be as dramatic as the leap from let's say PS1 to PS2 and PS2 to PS3

@dragonsama: yah, but this exists in pretty much any industry. Diminishing returns are always going to exist until there is something brand new to replace it.

I can't think of many technological things that made a leap that made me feel like "wow" in a while, even smartphones slowly got good. Maybe Tesla's cars are close? Before that was probably switching from 56k to DSL? Even PS2 to PS3 was big, but wasn't like N64. The first time I played Mario 64 I lost my mind.

@dragonsama: I agree with you in that resolution of graphic fidelity will be less and less. The 3-6th gens were all designed towards a humble tube tv, where the output was kinda standard. 3d development, architecture, AI was amazing to behold.

But now we have 720p 1080p,2k ,4k ,8k - HDR, and on and on. REaching these standards take so much resources, that containing the price to sub $500 is harder and harder, while still trying to find new grounds to break. Yet games are breaking new grounds everyday. HDR support, digital downloads, cloud games, the way load times are handled, better sound, faster fps, higher res, larger open worlds, and so much more just this 7 to 8th gen.

I think the 4th gen to 6th gen is full of rose colored glasses, and virgin memories that influence a person opinion more then the amazing leaps games are taking each generation. Young kids think 8th gen was the largest leap in games over 7th gen, only because they lived in this moment of time.

Graphic fidelity is important, but not when your playing FF7 remake, just amazing.

@dragonsama: Just because of the hardware supporting HD resolution, I think the most impactful graphics jump was the PS2/O Xbox to 360 and PS3. The textures being clear and smooth, no pixels visible, it was an incredible jump. It will be hard to repeat that jump now that everything is HD.

I suppose from Sega and Super Nintendo to N64 was the other massive jump. Being able to move in 3D space with Ocarina of Time and Mario 64 was pretty incredible.

PC is made of interchangeable parts.

Video game console is are created with custom component to get as much power from least amount of resources.

The XBOX series X has parts specifically designed to get a lot of power from a small foot print while not sounded like a jet plane or melt.

When it comes to PC and how much it cost to upgrade depends on how big the upgrade is and how much the user spent to future proof the PC.

A budget PC is not future proof and is already made of outdated parts to keep cost down.

@systemoverload: If budget PCs aren't future proof, why is my budget PC built in 2010 still running modern games no prob? Are you one of those weirdos who thinks every PC gamer has a $2000 PC even though devs have specifically stated they have numbers that show something like 1% of the gaming audience actually has PCs that good?

@Barighm: What was a good budget card then? Radeon 5770? You can probably run Overwatch/Fortnight at Low settings at 720/1080p and average above 30FPS?

I mean you make a fair point, especially as the most popular games on PC are not that demanding, and keeping for 10 years is pretty legit, but what was your budget then? $750-1000? You could have bought a PS4 new, sold it and upgraded to a PS4 Pro, then sold that and upgraded to the PS5 for the same money and not had to worry about drivers, part compatibility etc.

I'm sure you could upgrade your graphics card, or CPU, or even memory, but at some point you may as well just drop another $750-1000 and call it a day for the next 10 years. Which hey, still impressive, but, still hard to compare to console value/performance.

The guy is 100% correct in what he says and I fully agree. I’m always excited for a new hen of consoles, but it isn’t a groundbreaking jump anymore. It’s better graphics and that’s it. It meets expectations and that is it. It’s not like we will see new types of games or gameplay. We will get all the same games and types of games and gameplay we have this gen...and had last gen. I’ve had a great time with my PS4 but I’ve spent far more time playing my switch because I find it far more fun, accessible and the portability of it has been great.

This guy is using the shift from cartridge-based gaming to discs - to completely different mediums - to justify how the next-gen console are (in his eyes) not that big of a deal in terms of the shift from last gen. Going from the 16-bit era to CD's was all about the increased visual fidelity and the extra storage space discs allowed developers to work with and for decades, all the talk was just about graphics, graphics graphics. It was time when we went from 2D to 3D. From sprite-based characters, to 3D rendered models.

Today, we go from 3D, to better-rendered 3D. From X amount of polygons, to Y amount of polygons, where much of the change comes from rendering/post process effects, so of course the jump isn't going to as dramatic and yet sometimes, it still is. A focus on graphics will always be a thing, but as technology improves, where the focus lies will change.

We are at the point now where there are other aspects that people are focused on, like decreasing load times and cloud gaming. Improving aspects of multiplayer gaming, which didn't even exist when Playstation came on the market. Xbox has the Smart Delivery feature, which essentially gives you games for free. Consoles are not simply "insert game, play game" machines anymore. They offer a lot more than what they did in the days of the original PlayStation, so there is a lot more to focus on what to improve/add for a next-gen console.

@H0RSE: You are missing the point, I am not saying it is not good or that we don't need it. Of course give it to us, but to make that big a deal out of something so inherently required if it is to have backward compatibility. It is implied in BC!

Also, I think "smart delivery" should be an option, because this means that you will only have part of the full game. What if someone buys a game on XB1 in 2030 because they are just getting into gaming for the first time & then buys a XBsX by 2035? Can the game be removed & they can no longer make the upgrade? Smart delivery might be another MS scheme to remove you from completely owning the FULL game! Personally, I would rather have the FULL game & I can do as I please as I simply tack on another 10TB hard drive.

In other cases when storage is low it might be a temporary welcome though. And this is unlike PC games, where you get the ENTIRE game & can play it on so many PC's!

@just1mohr:

"Smart delivery might be another MS scheme to remove you from completely owning the FULL game!"

- but you literally are getting the full game, plus a free upgrade...are you sure you understand how smart delivery is going to work? If someone buy a game for Xbox One, they will receive a free graphical upgrade of the game for Xbox Series X. This system eliminates the need to buy multiple versions of games across generations. Nothing is locked, nothing is held back - it's 100% the full game. The performance/visual changes are a file you download and they are applied automatically, depending on what system you are playing it on.

However, Smart Delivery is offered to developers as an optional addition to Xbox Series X titles, meaning it is up to the dev and not a guaranteed feature. That being said, Microsoft has already pledged support for the upcoming first party titles spanning Xbox One and Xbox Series X, including Halo Infinite and Gears 5, and moving forward, I suspect their future games will follow suit. It has also been stated that this feature will work for both digital and physical purchased games.

@H0RSE: Come on MS don't BS me....smart delivery! My car & food have smart delivery too, as they are shipped to their respective vendors. So now I am rich when I buy a PC game, since I can play it on THOUSANDS of computers & laptops?

I can agree with all the other benefits, but smart delivery is corporate fluff and it should just be with no names & I do appreciate having it on PC's without thought.

If Nintendough can make graphically inferior consoles & still make fun games, then I think Sony & MS can do it. That is all they have to do, make FUN games. Imagine what Daemon X Machina, Astral Chain, DKC, StarFox, & Metroid games will look like on PS5/XBsX.

@just1mohr: anyone who doesn’t appreciate smart play is an ignorant fanboy. There has been many times over the years I’ve bought a game, then upgraded to the new gen and keep my old machine hooked up thinking I will finish certain games but then never do. I just accumulate more old consoles it seems. The ability to buy a current gen game and then also get the next gen version is amazing, and co side ring how copyright laws work, it is a great change for consumers.

@just1mohr:
"corporate fluff?" Hardly... Bringing PC into the discussion, as it is a completely different medium, is irrelevant. Consoles are not PC's. PC's are not closed systems like consoles, and thus they work differently. Someone buying an original Xbox One copy of a game and getting the Series X version for free, is awesome.

PC's do not have generations (again, because they operate differently...) so again, bringing them up is pointless. It would be like buying a nintendo game, that also works on super nintendo, but with the added graphics/features the SNES version offers, when playing on SNES.

And your car and food have smart delivery? How so? If you buy the base-line model of your car, you get the extra's for free? When you buy chuck steak from the store, do you also get a filet mignon at no cost?

@H0RSE: To be fair, PCs aren't completely open. Operating systems do act like generations to a degree since not all old games will work on newer operating systems, and platforms are trying very hard to make their games exclusive to their store. Suggesting PCs are completely irrelevant to this discussion demonstrates a degree of ignorance, or snobbishness.

@Barighm:

"To be fair, PCs aren't completely open."

- I never said they were...I only said they weren't closed systems like consoles are, which is true. Don't read into more than what I actually type.

"Operating systems do act like generations to a degree since not all old games will work on newer operating systems"

- "to a degree..." when speaking of old games no working on newer OS's, we are typically dealing with games that are at least a decade old, often times older than that, so yes, "to a degree..."

"Suggesting PCs are completely irrelevant to this discussion demonstrates a degree of ignorance, or snobbishness."

- No, it doesn't, not pertaining to the actual context of the discussion. The discussion is about the smart delivery system - how a game for one console will not only work on the new iteration of that console, but also be upgraded the new version designed for that console (assuming devs implement the relevant updates)

A smart delivery system for PC games makes no sense, since PC games are essentially always able to be the best they can be. If you buy a PC game, you have the best version of that game from the start - they are called graphics settings... there is no need to have a system where you get a new version of the game for free for your new, more powerful PC, because you already have it...

This is why it is irrelevant to bring PC into the discussion, because a system like smart delivery is exclusively a system for the console market, as it has no use or purpose with how PC games work.

And the issues you bring up with with old games not working on newer operating systems, is an issue with backwards compatibility, not smart delivery.
