PS5 / Xbox Series X: Platinum Games Studio Head Clarifies "More Of The Same" Comment

The head of Platinum Games responds to the "backlash" over his comments about the next-generation consoles.

73 Comments

In 2019, the head of Nier: Automata and Bayonetta developer Platinum Games, Atsushi Inaba, said he was not all that impressed by the next generation of consoles from Sony and Microsoft. He said they offered "more of the same," and those comments led to some debate and discussion, particularly after the enthusiastic praise we've heard from several other developers up to this point. However, he isn't backing down.

Inaba has now clarified his comments, telling Video Games Chronicle that his original words led to "a little bit of backlash" and the perception that he was a snob. Inaba now says he's excited by the fact that the new consoles will allow developers to "do more" as it relates to graphics and technology. However, he stands by his estimation that the leap from the PS4/Xbox One era to the PS5/Xbox Series X era won't be as dramatic as the shift that occurred years ago during previous console transitions.

Now Playing: Sony Confirms PS5 Event For Next Week - GS News Update

"If you think back to the generation between Super Nintendo and PlayStation, and how we went from pixel art to 3D polygons… nobody could have ever imagined that a few years prior," Inaba said. "When that stuff started coming out people were just blown away: they weren't ready for it, they weren't anticipating it… it was just so new."

The latest console generations, by comparison, leave something to be desired, Inaba said.

"I feel that the announcements that we've had for recent consoles generations, while all good and interesting, and of course I'm happy for us as developers to have better technology to work on… it's a 'perceivable' future," he said. "There's not the extreme surprise or the unexpected quality that I felt from the leap to previous consoles. Now I see the announcements and I think, 'Oh, that's cool' and then the next minute I think, 'Hmmm… what should I watch on Netflix tonight?'"

Inaba clarified that this is only his personal opinion, and that--from an industry level--the launch of the PS5 and Xbox Series X is "all very promising." He also mentioned that Sony and Microsoft have yet to fully reveal their new consoles, so it's possible the machines will end up wowing him.

"We haven't seen everything from next-gen at this point, I think, and it's still very likely that there could be a quality like that in these consoles that’s going to kind of be a game-changer, that's going to change how games could be played," he said. "And if that is the case, then maybe they'll blow me away. So I don't want to sound like, 'Hey, I know everything about the new consoles and they're boring.' But with the information that I have now, I haven't seen any extremely big surprises."

Inaba also called out the Nintendo Switch as an example of a platform-holder trying something bold and new. "The Nintendo Switch was very groundbreaking in how it was able to just to take a home console and make it portable," he said. "It's something that you hadn't seen a lot of people doing before: it took this wall, that perhaps a lot of people didn't know even existed, and broke it down."

Platinum's latest release is The Wonderful 101: Remastered for Nintendo Switch, which got a 4/10 in GameSpot's review. Among the developer's upcoming games is Bayonetta 3 for the Nintendo Switch. The studio is also working on Project G.G., which is a hero-based action game.

I think the next ground breaking movement will be in level destruction & body destruction. They have more pixel count now, we should be able to see guts and blood spewing in all directions and be able to destroy any asset at will. Bring on the grenades & rocket launchers as then the future of gaming is bright!

Check out on youtube & ya see what I mean, now that is a game I want to play even with those level of graphics & a console launch I can look forward to!

@just1mohr: Gears of War 2 was probably one of the last games to really try to do this on a big scale when it came to massive creatures. That Red Faction series was the last to try to a ton of level destruction. There is a lot of destructible objects in games now, but nowhere near as ambitious as it was last gen it seems. AI is another facet of games not really talked about a lot this gen.

Developer could collaborate and develop a video game console like Hudson Soft did or protest and not develop any games for PS5 or XBOX series X.

@systemoverload: It's just not worth it to get into the console industry. Much more profits and super minimal stress when producing software for the other companies.

You know he is indirectly referring to the PS5. I mean, who launches a 9.2tflops console at the end of 2020? Nobody does that.

@hardwenzen: That's false. Quit spreading misinformation.

And that's not what he's talking about at all. He's referring to ALL platforms save the Switch. That's the downside of the Resolution era: more resources just to accomplish nothing more than slightly clearer picture.

@uchihasilver:

I guess it’s different depending on console. MS have a lot more on PC these days and with HZD, maybe Sony are testing the water.

For me gaming time is a premium. So the quick power on from the sofa with next to no setup time is key.

If I had maybe more time and disposable income ( starting from scratch) I maybe more interested

@uchihasilver: Why buy a console when you can buy a PC? Well how about 500 bucks for an Xbox 4K console VS at least 2000 bucks for a gaming PC. Does that make any sense to you? 2000 dollars would only gives you a mid high gaming PC, i spent nearly $4000 building my own gaming PC. Most people can't even afford a 700 bucks low tech PC that can do nothing for gaming.

@angrycreep: oh boy. Here we go. You walked into this never ending trap HARD. Don’t you already know every pc gamer has a high end rig that can run all games on max settings and paid only $37.50 to build? And that even though when you talk to any serious pc user, it seems like they spend countless hours obsessing over maximizing their hardware and settings and customizing their rig, really that never happens and they only spend maybe 5 minutes a year upgrading and maintaining it.

I’m not going to read any of the replies...how close did I get?

@danmu:

Those PC gamers have spent a fortune putting their machine together. You trying to convince those that don't have a gaming PC to not choose a 500 bucks machine and go the PC way and spent thousand of dollars putting a PC capable of running games at a stable 4K. It just makes no sense at all.

Plus you are slow in the brain there are far more people without a gaming PC than there are people with a gaming PC. Probably out number the ones with a gaming PC by 8 to 2. There are far and far more people who would be able to afford a 500 bucks console than those who don't have a gaming PC and can't afford to buy a gaming PC. Plus a lot manufactures are selling a lot of those so called gaming PC's that go for 600 to 800 bucks that can't run games no better than 1080P at 60fps. Those are not gaming PCs

There are around 50 millions Xbox one, S and X consoles sold around the world. How much the PC's took away from Xbox? The answer is next to nothing as most people went with Xbox rather than skipping it and play them in their PC's or buying a PC to play them there. Your argument is rather stupid

@angrycreep: I like how you say I am slow in the brain, yet you clearly didn’t understand my post at all or the fact I’m on your side.
