PS4/Vita's New Valkyria Chronicles Game, Revolution, Also Coming to Xbox One

The next game in the Valkyria series, Valkyria Revolution, arrives for PS4, Xbox One, and Vita in North America and Europe sometime next spring, Atlus announced today.

Known in Japan as Valkyria: Azure Revolution, the game marks some significant departures from the Valkyria Chronicles games. It takes place in a different universe from the previous games and no longer features turn-based combat. This, along with with some issues Atlus had with localizing the name more literally, are the two reasons cited for the name change.

A specific release date wasn't shared; a PlayStation Blog post lists it as "Spring 2017" while a press release points to the second quarter, which runs from April through June.

Atlus also announced that it will offer an Xbox One version for Revolution's western release. Physical and digital versions will be available for PS4 and Xbox One, but Vita owners will only have a digital copy available to them. There's no word on a PC version; the original Valkyria Chronicles was released on PC, but this year's excellent remaster was PS4-only.

Atlus described Revolution as having a "brand-new battle system that mixes real-time combat and tactical strategy." It added, "The static, turn-based battlefield has become an action-oriented stage for devastating melee combos, lethal ranged attacks, and strategic shifts to turn the tide of battle."

Weapons can be upgraded over the course of the game and permadeath makes a return. The soundtrack comes from composer Yasunori Mitsuda, who previously worked on games such as Chrono Trigger and Xenogears.

Earlier this year, we learned that Revolution was undergoing significant redesigns in response to feedback from its first demo in Japan.
