Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida confirmed the plans in a message to fans on Twitter, stating that “we are indeed working on an official application for PC/Mac.”

The announcement comes days after a developer, going by the online handle Twisted, announced an unofficial Remote Play app for Windows.

Remote Play launched in November 2013, during the global release of PlayStation 4, and was pitched as an alternative way to play PS4 games through a second screen. Gameplay data is streamed to the PS Vita across a home Wi-Fi network, with input commands returning back to the system. Certain phones, such as Sony’s Xperia Z5, are also compatible with the service.

There are no further details yet on how the service will work for PC and Mac owners.

Microsoft offers a similar console-to-PC streaming service, where an Xbox One can be mirrored on a Windows 10 device.

@blackamerica: considering they were the ones that supported streaming to a different device from the get go that statement is just plain dumb. I can't sugarcoat it, that's about the nicest way I can say it.

@blackamerica: What was the first copycat move?

And by the way, streaming is nothing new for PS4. In fact, it was the first console of this generation to have the feature, so how is this even copying?

@blackamerica:

"which no ones owns by the way"

Wow, I know it's been out longer and the Xbox one will far surpass it but it probably has an install base only shy a couple million from the Xbox one which you are using as the good streaming box.

Holidays will change that by quite a lot I assume but right now it just makes your comment look ridiculous.

@blackamerica: wow... it's streaming. Nothing fancy. You think Microsofts invents every tech out there. And why would MS block this from gamers that want to use the feature? Maybe thinking like that is why people hate Microsoft and the way their supporters think.

@joshrmeyer: This is business and sony is not helping Microsoft sale anything, so to put this context yes Microsoft should block it. This is their software not sony's if sony wants to stream to PC then maybe they should look into creating their software. In business you never help your competition.

@blackamerica: i don't think you understand how making an app works for pc. You make the app, then you put it up for people to download either for free or payed for. All that Windows does is provide a way for you to download the app and run it. Microsoft has no control over what you do on your computer.

@Aaronspark777: they have no control over the hardware, However because the app i s not the hardware. They can have all the say so in the world when it comes to the OS system which is windows the software. you can say that or think that they will not block it, I hope say for one that they should block it because it's competition creating an app that will have to run on the windows software.

@blackamerica: dude you have no clue. MS can just block whoever for whatever reason they want. It would be PR suicide. There would be no advantage to doing that anyways. It would taint their name even more than it already is. Stop being such a whiny fanboy and be a gamer. You really worried this is gonna hurt xbox1 sales? Geez, who cares.

@blackamerica: I didn't know Microsoft owned PC... interesting. And FYI, PC isn't software. It would only hurt MS to block this from Windows. Windows is MS's bread and butter. Not xbox sales, and they certainly don't care about ps4 sales. Xbox division might care, but not the Windows division. Out of curiousity, can you download and install the ps app on a windows phone? Probably.

@joshrmeyer: quit being short sided here, when talk about pc you are talking about windows as windows owns 80% percent of the in the pc world. mac makes up less and so does linux. the fact is that Microsoft would be well in their rights to block app or feature from working any pc's that run windows.

@blackamerica: I have a Vita. Three in fact (my two sons have one each too).

Secondly, why does it matter what platform the games are being streamed to? Sony has been streaming games to Vita since the PS3 and lately they've extended this to Smartphones. Their next logical move would have been to PC, whether Microsoft had implemented PC streaming on Xbox or not.

If you want to play that game, then one could argue Microsoft copied Sony with streaming games to other devices in general.

Also; Microsoft has no right to block the application on PC.

Think before you speak.

Sony also said from the get go using gaiki for Psnow on PC was a goal so it makes sense they're doing this as well.

They don't tweet every other day what they're doing or thinking and I think people forget previous comments.

@domiddian: i don't think you can you make a logical exertion that Microsoft copied sony at all here. I twas Microsoft's goal from the being to make xbox more than just console. however i can say that sony has had it on the vita which still is a major flop. The ps4 or ps3 if you will was never created with streaming to the pc in mind unlike the xbox was. so this is why i stand by my comment

Man, before psnow ever even launched a beta Sony said its intention for streaming was platform agnostic.

They wanted streaming everywhere even to people who did not own a PlayStation console. It's been reported.

@blackamerica: I'm not saying Microsoft copied Sony, I'm just saying that one could argue this if they wished. Saying that, I don't think Sony copied Microsoft either. The PS4 was designed with streaming games in mind, to which platform is irrelevant. This is why they purchased Gaikai.

The "copycat" argument is silly.

@blackamerica: Playstation is just switching to more devices (they had streaming for a couple of years now towards ps vita and phones), so you can't really name it copycat.

Lol at this US vs Japan debate. Just take a look at the consoles the XBone is big, ugly and needs a power brick. On the other hand the PS4 is smaller, neat looking and doesn't need a power brick, not to mention that it's also more powerful being smaller you'd think it'd be the other way around. So conclusion Japanese tech/innovation >>>>>>>>>>> US tech/innovation.

@cheers: The majority of the X1's size is just empty space. For heat dissipation or something.

I'd rather the PS4 had a power brick. It gets awfully hot.

People may or may not remember that streaming was already available to the PC... for the PS3. Sony made an app that for use only with Sony computers. It was very buggy and it didn't work very well.

@hystavito: Yup, it was a thing. Someone even wrote a hack so it could be used with regular PCs at the time. But again, it didn't work very well and the streaming looked terrible. I tried using it myself.

First backwards compatibility (ps2 emu) now console to PC streaming.

It looks like Yoshida is looking at the competition and seeing something he would like his console to be.

@vogtcha: Except PS2 emulation was announced last year, well before Microsoft's E3 press conference and remote play has always been a thing for PS4 via Vita/smartphones, the next logical step would have been laptops/desktops regardless of what MS is doing.

@MrFreehuggs: It doesn't matter that it was an anonymous source, it was obviously "someone in the know" as we have now had that confirmed, which means Sony must have been working on it way before Microsoft's announcement, which was my point. Sorry, should have clarified. And yes, you're right, it wasn't an "announcement", my mistake.

Cool feature, but will probably never use it myself. I suppose this is useful if someone is watching TV in living room where a PS4 is plugged in, you would switch the PS4 on and play from your room or other room.
