Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida confirmed the plans in a message to fans on Twitter, stating that “we are indeed working on an official application for PC/Mac.”

The announcement comes days after a developer, going by the online handle Twisted, announced an unofficial Remote Play app for Windows.

Remote Play launched in November 2013, during the global release of PlayStation 4, and was pitched as an alternative way to play PS4 games through a second screen. Gameplay data is streamed to the PS Vita across a home Wi-Fi network, with input commands returning back to the system. Certain phones, such as Sony’s Xperia Z5, are also compatible with the service.

There are no further details yet on how the service will work for PC and Mac owners.

Microsoft offers a similar console-to-PC streaming service, where an Xbox One can be mirrored on a Windows 10 device.

If I stream to PC, can I play online without PS+? This can be a deciding factor to some gamers on whether to buy PS4 versions of games or get them from Steam/GOG.

@Jinzo_111887:

You have to own a Playstation and have it turned on. Its no different than streaming to their $60 Playstation TV streaming device. You will be playing your Playstation just using a different screen other than your TV... Its not like the Windows 10 Xbox app where they will be porting some Xbox games, if not all, eventually.

This application that they are working on has nothing to do with PC gaming. It is simply using your computer monitor as a video output for your PS4.

@obsidian_born: Even then, it seems like it would be a little pointless as the PS4 doesn't display in 4k resolution, and I don't see it doing that when it is streaming to PC. The only potential benefit I might be able to think of would be the ability to use non-DS4 controllers for the game.

There are no benefits aside from using a separate screen to free up the living room TV, or whatever TV your PS4 is plugged into.

It isn't cross play... All its doing is using your PC monitor to play your Playstation... thats it. Its no different than the Playstation TV device.

@Jinzo_111887: stop... its the same.. if a dev/publisher mandates ps plus sub for access to that portion of their game then you need ps plus. This is their decision... that said, out of hundreds of games on ps4 only 14 demand ps plus to function. .. we know what your actual goal here is...

@Mirimon78: That's true for free to play games. Can you show me retail ones don't require PS+ for online multiplayer? Also, if you're to say "use share play" that counts as requiring PS+ since two players can't interact with each other unless one of them has PS+.

@Jinzo_111887: shareplay does not require ps plus.... at all...

As for retail games with online multiplayer that do not require ps plus... every mmorpg..... justvas an example, which you already know but you are and ever have been bent on naysaying ps plus (which isnoptional) and praising xbl (mandated)...

Go on, move some more goal posts and come back...

@Mirimon78: So if neither player has PS+, they can both play online with each other without getting other people involved? I remember Sony saying the sharer needed it. Can you also use your own save files instead of the ones on the sharer's console?

Retail games, MMORPGs don't count as you can't just buy them as discs a store like Target, Meijer, Wal-mart, Toys'R'Us, etc.. Hint: Think Drive Club, Little Big Planet 3, Battlefield 4, etc. Also, I am not praising XBL. I despise that thing for tainting modern console gaming with this policy.

You're the one moving the goal post.

@Mirimon78: I don't count MMOs as they have their own separate subscription fee.

Has to be all online modes that are free and has to allow me to use my own save files, not ones on other systems. Anything that uses Share Play doesn't count as it requires PS+ indirectly, thus isn't free, and doesn't let me use my own save files if I understand the purpose of it correctly.

Share Play requires PS+ to work, even if it is indirectly. That's why I don't count it.

Also, I would advise you to remove the last sentence from your post.

@Mirimon78: My goal post hasn't moved, you're just misjudging the distance to it.

Even if it is on disc, which I have my doubts about, there was another reason I didn't count MMOs. I never got the appeal of them, despite having tried a few.

Check Sony's official FAQ. I remember them saying the sharer needs it to share the game with the sharee. That does count.

If you checked the Gamespot TOS, you might get why I advised you to edit that last post.

@Mirimon78: Has to be completely free online. Has to allow you to use your own save files. Cannot be an MMO, which I doubt they have on disc.

If they require PS+ for any feature, that ruins free online as it's an attempt to charge multiple times for a game I already paid for.

Yes, I have read about it and it seems the sharer needs a PS+ subscription. Which ruins the free online multiplayer aspect of it. Feel free to do a little more digging on that if you want.

Just a warning, you're reminding me of someone I noticed got into trouble on the U.S. PlayStation Community forums.

@Jinzo_111887: look kid, you have no clout in offering warnings, especially given your lack of integrity and intellectual capability.

Since you can't be bothered to actually look at the games offered on the shelves of the stores to see for your self, you could call them, or browse their catalogue online (don't take it from this retailer at all either, I am always lying...)

Actually, lets use some of your own fail logic here....

Game must be completely free to play online to count? That means no game, at all, especially not on pc counts either, given your logic. Why? Because you have to buy the hardware, the software, you have to pay for a place to stay and for power and for internet access... thus no game ever made for online olay is free to play, so you should just avoid gaming, and the internet all together ok?

@Mirimon78: I'm pretty sure flamers on Sony's forums thought the same thing before they got in trouble. I might not be a mod, but you should avoid flaming just in case they are watching you.

My issue is with companies in the game industry to trying to charge multiple times to play online. On PC, the basic checklist is complete. Sony, MS, and many subscription based MMO companies are just charging for online to multi-dip.

Yes, stream your PS4 to your PC!

Instead of... you know.... playing games on your PC.

Exclusives aside, I think I'd rather just play my PC. Thanks for trying though console dudes, maybe next gen you'll get it right.

@Richardthe3rd: let me know how well that pc plays uncharted, surely since it played uncharted before... oh, wait, it didn't..... (attack UC if you like, but that is but one of MANY exclusive ip's that are both good, and not on pc.

Were they on pc already, sure, no reason to have a ps4, but they aren't. The same cannot be said for msft, who started on pc but cast pc aside. And who already haven't givwn us a rwason to buy their console, so they might as well just publish their crappy halo 5 and pther mediocre titles on pc, where they will still get at least a few sales to help recoup the recurring annual cost now up to $3 billion USD to keep the xbox brand operational....

@Mirimon78: "but that is but one of MANY exclusive ip's that are both good, and not on pc."

"And who already haven't givwn us a rwason to buy their console"

UC is the reason? But I've had a PS3 sitting in my living room for a while, and I have never felt compelled to play these games. Subjective reasoning fail.

Sony hasn't given good reasons to buy it's console; it's a flaccid, barely improved continuance of the previous generation. Gameplay wise it hasn't expanded the capabilities of consoles; you're still expected to be a thumb-jockey that "oohs and ahhs" over cinematic, scripted third person games and auto-aim enhanced shooters. No RTS, no cross-platform viability, no nothing. You're still trapped by them.

M$ is at least coming to understand that consoles aren't relevant and people want more, even if their system is an abortion at this point. Sony needs to embrace the reality of the market and start making the actual experience of playing games better for their customers.

@squall_83: no, that's exactly what "supported" means... plugging in and playing any game with standard controller function, no apps needed, drivers already included.... that is exactly what supported means.

Even you yourself said it, and then discounted it.

Support is support....

@Mirimon78: It runs in DXInput mode. Games rarely use this mode anymore because almost all games run on XInput and use Xbox 360 controllers. It functions, but it doesn't work properly with most games. When most people think about something being supported they don't assume that it barely functions. There is a difference and that is my point. Once they release a proper driver that uses XInput and functions with the majority of games then it will be properly "supported".

I also want it supported on the steam link since I prefer it to the Xbox one controller and my 360 ones are old.
