PS4 Pro's Boost Mode Analyzed In Assassin's Creed, Bloodborne, Batman: Arkham Knight, More

New report shows performance boosts in some scenarios.

PS4's latest 4.50 firmware update (currently only available in beta) introduces a Boost Mode to PS4 Pro, which, according to Sony, allows for "smoother gameplay on some PS4 games" that haven't already received PS4 Pro patches. Now, a new report from Digital Foundry seems to corroborate those claims, after tests on Bloodborne, Assassin's Creed Unity, and more.

It appears games' base frame rates don't show much--if any--improvement, but more demanding areas and moments in some games no longer cause the dip in frame rate they did before. Bloodborne, for example, is still capped at 30 FPS in Boost Mode, but its frame rate no longer dips to the mid-20s when running through certain sections of Yarnham. Batman: Arkham Knight sees similar enhancements in its driving sections, which now run at a steady 30 FPS with Boost Mode enabled.

Meanwhile Knack, Tomb Raider Definitive Edition, and Killzone: Shadow Fall all show a 14 percent overall frame rate increase in more demanding sections. This reflects the 14 percent rise in GPU clock speed between a normal PS4 and a Boost Mode-enabled PS4 Pro. CPU upgrades, meanwhile, grant Assassin's Creed Unity a 31 percent improvement during frame-dropping parts to 29 FPS.

Most impressive so far is Project Cars, which according to Digital Foundry shows a 35-38 percent improvement in frame rate, meaning the game's targeted 60 FPS is hit much more consistently.

It might not all be plain sailing, however. Sony says you should disable the feature if "you experience unexpected behavior during gameplay."

Results vary from game to game, then. Note that as Sony has not yet confirmed the feature as part of the final 4.50 firmware release, it's possible it may not make it into this upcoming update. Boost Mode's inclusion in 4.50 "is still under consideration," the company told GameSpot.

The 4.50 update also introduces external storage support, a revamped Quick Menu, and more.

Is this update coming to the regular PS4? I'm not wasting $400 on a brand new PS4 when I have one that works just fine. Such a scam.

I am a hybrid gamer. I enjoy games on both consoles (ps4 mainly) and pc. What I do not understand is why you would get the pro version? I mean it plays the same games, functions almost the same with minor graphical enhancements. I mean for me it's a scam honestly. rather spent those 400 bucks on a beast pc to run games at 40-60 fpt on ultra (with or without the AA options enabled)

So this is supposed to a positive selling point? Sorry, but this is just another reason to wait for MSs next console or go the route of PC gaming.

The base frame rates are fine as on as devs adhere to them, but they don't. They sneak in dropped frames and slower frame rates in order to wow us with eye candy that pushes the hardware way too hard.

Beast Mode provides just enough extra clout to cancel out those drops and bring performance back up to where is should be. But it's a very welcome one use gain for all past games that don't get a Pro patch. All new games are patched and optimised for the Pro, so no Beast Mode gain is possible.

Going forward, the devs will just max out the Pro as well and continue to grind the frame rate again in order to wow us with eye candy, with no Beast Mode to save us.

This story is obviously bogus. No sane person would ever play AC: Unity (not even to test framerates) while there are other Assassin's Creed games available. Heck, even AC3 is better than Unity.

But seriously, why would I buy a PS4 Pro when they haven't even got to the point at which we can play 4-player couch co-op. I mean, we had this decades ago with the early consoles, but it seems the recent obsession with graphics has set back family gaming by a generation. I mean, come on Sony - 4-player couch co-op - it shouldn't be this difficult.

@ianbrettcooper:

Errr... AC Unity was actually a great game underneath all those horrendous bugs and crappy performance. Patches cured the bugs and it appears Beast Mode cures the performance issues. The leaves us with a great game. Yes Ubisoft deserved to be punished for selling us such crap in order to make more money by rushing a game out every year, but you cannot continue to say AC Unity is crap when it's been cured. Even if Ubisoft doesn't deserve the credit, the game has been cured.

It appears you're just using this example to promote your anti PS4 Pro stance. That's ok as long as you make that clear so we can disagree.

Nobody wants 4p couch coop. Those were the days before internet. While couch coop relies on your friends being present and available, the internet will always throw you up a match with randoms or friends any time of day, instantly. Yes couch coop is better performance wise due to no network latency but people just don't want it. They want the convenience and immediacy of internet multiplayer.

Sony is just giving the majority what they want. You are in the minority. That's life. Democracy is at work.

@justerthought: You are correct, Co-op is the minority now. But to say people don't want it is vastly incorrect. Nowadays if you want to play with your family, every member of that family needs to have their own console. It's a scam. Games have veered from being something you can do with your family or friends at your own house. You no longer have that social experience of someone sitting right next to you and playing with you. Now all you have is their voice. Social interaction has drastically vanished.

More and more games are being meant more for single people living in dark rooms with no interaction in the outside world. When you have a family and want to play with them you will realize that.

@justerthought: Fixed bugs notwithstanding, it's still nowhere near as good a game as Black Flag, Syndicate, AC2 or Brotherhood, and it's not even as good as Revelations, AC3 or AC1, which are among the weakest in the franchise. Bugfixes can't fix the half baked story or the horrendous story missions. The game was unfinished when it shipped and a few bug fixes and beast mode only goes so far, and not nearly far enough.

Unity is a "nice-looking" game, but a "great game"? No way. Maybe it's playable in multiplayer, but that doesn't make up for the awful main story mode.

I haven't really read into this whole ps4 pro boost thing, but does it just mean it's the Base game, same resolution and graphics settings only at higher frame rates? Because if that's the case, and games are still not hitting 60fps, that sounds like a joke.

@TerrorRizzing: It is when it's so minimal, on a machine that's touted to be so much more.

It's a pretty minor upgrade. It's good that it makes some games more stable, a solid 30fps is a whole lot better than stuttering in & out but I'd really like to see 60fps for any action oriented game.

I'm definitely glad I switched back to PC gaming a few years back. There are a handful of games exclusive to PS4 I'd like to play but high framerates & G-Sync make for a categorically better experience for most games.

I couldn't be happier with Boost Mode. I haven't run into any FPS dips since I installed the 4.50 beta.

The boost mode helped to make arsetto corsa and project cars run on a smooth framerate even without an official pro patch. Assasins creed unity also now got a gain good fps on boost mode, the fps was terrible on the base ps4.

Admittedly, I had no prior interest in the PS4 Pro; but the Boost feature makes it much more enticing to me than the 4k support ever has.

@artemis-v: 2 or 3 more frames a second to hit a solid 30fps is far more interesting to you that the visual eyegasm and serendipitous joy 4k visuals bring on a freaking console? lol.. yeah, ok.

@khanwashere: Where console gaming is concerned, yes, I'd much rather have a steadier framerate than a higher resolution.

They'd be crazy to NOT include this in the next update. I wasn't planning on getting a Pro for a while, but this has me intrigued! Next sale, I'm sold!
