PS4 Hacked, Video Demonstrates Console Playing Pokemon

Hacker group Fail0verflow releases custom PS4 Linux OS.

The notorious hacking group Fail0verflow has demonstrated what appears to be the world's first low-level hack of the PlayStation 4.

As well as bypassing the console's security measures, Fail0verflow has also managed to write a custom version of Linux for the console, and has made the PS4 Linux port publicly available on its website.

A video demonstration of the hack also shows the PS4 playing what appears to be a modded version of Pokemon Emerald, renamed as "Pokemon PlayStation Version."

Fail0verflow has been responsible for hacks of numerous consoles. Digital Foundry claims the group had previously hacked the Wii, Wii U, and PlayStation 3.

Hacker group Fail0verflow has demonstrated "Pokemon PlayStation Version" running on PS4

The PlayStation 4 had proven to be free from such hacks for more than two years since its release.

But late in December, at the Chaos Communication Congress event in Hamburg, representatives for Fai0verflow published a five-minute video demonstrating the PS4 running a custom version of Linux.

The group appeared to be impressed by the PlayStation 4's architecture, claiming: "The Marvell engineers who designed the southbridge were smoking some really good stuff."

While some hackers advocate the bypassing of console security as more a hobbyist pursuit, corporations tend to claim that such hacks pave the way for pirated games.

Sony can't possibly be saying that the PS4 is "incapable" or PS1 and PS2 emulation. Are they? Or are they preferring to sell updated games with achievements and stuff instead? This would certainly make more sense.

It would be laughable if they tried to genuinely convince everyone that PS4 is now "powerful" enough to emulate those 2 systems. PS2 emulation was running many PS2 games in "enhanced" fashion on PC's 7 years ago. This would be hilarious if they tried to hammer that excuse home.

I haven't followed the PS1/PS2 on PS4 situation close enough to know Sony's "official" position, but it seems people on here are stating that Sony is making this claim.

@datriax: The hardware is capable, but the software isn't there.

The PC emulator requires different configuration settings for every game or else there will be glitches. It's not a simple process of put in a disk, and you get emulation 100% no issues. The PS4 is the same. Each game is going to need to be extensively tested and and configuration profile created for it to ensure good enough quality.

With thousands of titles they'd have to test, there's no way Sony is going to bother, especially if there's no return on the investment. MS's emulator only supports 100 games or so.

Sony is not going to release a universal emulator, because it just wouldn't work. They'd need a gajillion testers playing every game all the way through.

PCSX2 is an independantly developed software in perpetual beta. Millions of people using it are doing the testing for them, and creating their own configurations and sharing them. That works for a free piece of software on the PC written by an indie. That won't cut it for a console manufacturer. How long has PCSX2 been around btw? Millions of people have been testing that emulator for more than 10 years. And you're still going to get audio and visual glitches btw.. unless you have the right combination of hardware and settings, and even then it's not guaranteed.

PCSX2 can get away with it, because the users are doing the testing. If Sony released an emulator, Sony would have to do the testing in house. They can't just release an emulator and say, here it is. You guys test it for us. That's not how a professional corporation operates.

The only way you're going to get emulation working 100% is if you include the old chips and do it in hardware, not software, like the launch PS3s. With software, each title is going to need to be extensively tested. That costs money. Which is why they're selling you the games instead of letting you play your own discs.

@datriax: in theory they could make an emulator for PS4, it would be fully capable of running PS1 games, maybe even PS2 games.

@datriax: Doesn't matter what Sony claims, only that they should allow for disc based emulation like their competitors do and show a little loyalty to those who have been loyal to them.

Also, you should edit your post, seems like a lot of words out of place(guessing or = of, now = not). Phone auto complete choosing wrong words I bet.

@suicidesn0wman: i know you know how it really works..

To be clear, the disc is a physical drm check... a ticket to authorize the downloading of a digital version. Actual disc based bc would be simply plug and play, the game and everything about it is on the disc and is pulled from the disc itself. Unplug the internet= no "bc" fir xb1, because the game is not being ran from, booted, installed or executed from that disc.

Also... funny thing, look at the bump in physical sales of those xb360 games on te current "bc" list... so much for the usual yarn about playing games they already own for free.

@suicidesn0wman: It costs a lot of money to do that, because in software there's no universal emulator you can use that will play everything. Some games will have glitches, others won't or will have different glitches. Each game needs to be tested extensively and have their own profile. That's how MS did it with 360 emulator Xbox and XB1 emulating 360.

MS is doing it becuase they're behind in the race. Do you think they'd do it if they were winning?

Wii U hardware uses the same architecture as Wii (which is how Nintendo always builds on their hardware), so emulating that is doable in hardware, so it runs exactly how it should. Software emulation is a whole new can of worms.

@lostn: Not concerned with reasons, concerned with competition. While Xbox is trying to make amends and push their console as far as possible, and catering to their fans, Sony is sitting back laughing at all the idiots who are buying emulated games they already paid for once, some twice.

It'd just be nice to see Sony actually do something for their fans instead of waiting until things break and they're forced to give back.

Also, how much money do you think Sony is losing by not letting me use my GTA VC disc to play the emulated GTA VC PS2 game? 10 cents on average? 25 cents? Yet letting us use our disc would also be advertisement to our friends who do not have the disc, which would lead to an increase in sales, maybe even more sales than they'd get w/out letting us use our discs. So are they really losing money by letting gamers use their old discs from 15 years ago that most got rid of, or are they losing money by not letting us advertise the product for them?

I have no idea how you would calculate this to be honest. But the PS3 didn't have PS2 BC either, aside from the short run initial 60GB units, and it did fine. I do wish they'd let us use discs too, but I don't think it's costing them sales by not including it. I don't know what sales pitch you would give to get a PS2 owner to buy a PS4 becuase he can play PS2 games on it.. he can play them on the system he has now.

I think it sucks that you can't pop a disc in and have to buy the titles, but that's not costing them money. There are plenty of reasons to not buy a PS4, but I don't rank lack of BC highly as one of them. If you have the games already, you likely have the system to play it on. Why buy a new system just because it can do that? Buy a new system for the games you can't play right now.

@suicidesn0wman: your kind are buying up 360 discs left and right, soecifically those bc titles you all claim to already own......

Sony sitting back? If by sitting back you mean setting the bar and expanding it with streaming, shareplay, remote play and vr? Sitting back on brining new IPs rathr than focusing on poorly performed bc...

Alot is happenong on xbox because it needed to happen to catch up, and still ain't on par. While very little needed happen on ps4, and yet, unlike msft, sony is still innovating and doing something even the pc crowd haven't been able to do (like make vr available to the mainstream and not just the top 7% of lite pc users, which I am :)

This is to be expected. The PS4 runs off-the-shelf PC components and is x86-compatible. Neither Sony nor AMD are known for their security expertise, either.

this is nothing to get emotional about. any "progress" that might have been made by this group was patched out by sony in a previous update. no current system can run this exploit. also, it's not like they managed to run a ps4 iso or anything. ps4 will likely never be fully exploited, and even if it is, a future update will close the crack right away. after nearly 4 years, the ps vita has yet to be fully exploited which goes to show sony did its homework.

Another article sourced from gamespots own forums with no credit given, fucking losers.

http://www.gamespot.com/forums/system-wars-314159282/playstation-4-hacked-to-run-linux-32887426/#7

Funny part is, the thread was closed because gamespot doesn't 'discuss home brew, hacking, piracy, and emulation' here. I guess Rob didn't get that memo.

Bunch o' wasters, it would probably be cheaper and faster to just get a ps1 and play it on that, all that fuss for pokemon =P

Sony should do a deal with these hackers to get ps1 and ps2 games working on ps4 from the disc or emulation like pc does. If they don't make a deal, the hackers will only do it on their own and Sony will lose out on money or good publicity.

@halvedlife: It won't be long before PS 1 and PSP games will be running on it. I won't be cracking my device, having said that, until a good while after Sony has totally given up on the device and no further firmware will be developed. After that I will have a relatively useless device and feel no shame in saying that I will be running emulation on it.

Unfortunately, this time is fast approaching for Vita.
