PS4 Free Online Multiplayer Weekend Starts Friday

It may only be Monday, but Sony is already gearing up for the upcoming weekend. The company has announced a free online multiplayer weekend for March 20-22, during which all PlayStation 4 owners can play games online without a PlayStation Plus ($50/year) membership.

The event officially kicks off Friday, March 20, at 12:01 AM PDT and runs through Sunday, March 22, at 11:59pm Pacific. The free weekend doesn't include the PlayStation Plus extras, such as free monthly games and discounts, which are still only available for gamers with an active paid membership.

PS4's free online multiplayer weekend comes during the launch week for Battlefield Hardline, a multiplayer-focused shooter from Visceral Games. The game officially arrives Tuesday, March 17, but EA Access members on Xbox One have been able to play a ten-hour trial since March 12.

This isn't the first free online multiplayer event for PS4, as Sony held a similar weekend-only promotion just last month. Competitor Microsoft also from time to time drops the Xbox Live Gold requirement for special weekends, the most recent of which was held in February.
