PS3 Slim already on sale, disassembled

"Extremely limited stock" selling out at brick-and-mortar stores; online retailers currently shipping units; hardware hackers get how-to guide.

When it was first announced last week at GamesCom in Germany, the PlayStation 3 Slim was given a September 1 release date. That appears to have fallen by the wayside, though, with both brick-and-mortar stores and online retailers already offering the $299 120GB console.

The PS3 Slim: Already at a retailer near you.
The PS3 Slim: Already at a retailer near you.

Calls to several San Francisco Bay Area retailers found that not only is the PS3 currently on sale, but it's often sold out. Employees at several GameStop locations said that they had received "extremely limited stock" of the console on Tuesday, all of which were instantly scooped up by customers who had reserved a unit.

"I think Sony's probably trying to keep supply tight, so it will be in high demand like the Wii and the PS3 were at launch," one GameStop employee told GameSpot. "We had less than a week's warning it was coming. We had reserves only open for two to three days, and the shipment only had 12 to 13 consoles. We don't know when we'll be getting our next batch."

Meanwhile, GameStop's online store and Amazon.com are already listing the PS3 slim as shipping within 24 hours. Meanwhile, Best Buy's online store says the console is already back-ordered one to two weeks and not available for store pickup. However, calls to San Francisco-area Best Buy locations found that the PS3 Slim is currently both on sale and in stock. "We've got about a dozen on the store floor right now, enough to hold one if you'd like," said an employee.

For its part, Sony says that the launch date announced at GamesCom was more of a guideline for would-be purchasers. "September 1 isn't an official street date," a rep told GameSpot. "We expect most retailers to have 120GB PS3s by then."

Meanwhile, hardware hackers who have already acquired a PS3 Slim now have a step-by-step guide on how to tear it apart. The repair guide and anti-eWaste site Ifixit.com has posted a four-page, 27-step guide on how to completely disassemble the new console, which offers some insights into how Sony is cutting production costs. Besides the new 45nm-process chipset, the PS3 Slim teardown reveals the "new cooling system," which Sony Computer Entertainment America hardware marketing chief John Koller revealed last week--namely, a gigantic fan.

To see Ifixit.com's PS3 Slim teardown in action, check out the photo-montage video below:

Well it looks like Sonys plan worked... repackage the same exact console and people will dump their perfectly good original PS3s for "the new thing!" Wow just amazing.

What total bs. They said September 1st was the exact release date... and now here they are saying it's only a "guideline."

If they add in backwards compatibility, I'll get one definitely. Until then, I'm happy waiting until FFXIII is released to even consider a PS3 purchase. The price drop is a definite plus, but when the game library really doesn't entice me, it's just not worth it yet.

this is bs because i got one at gamestop and i asked the guy how many they had and he said they had 23 of them!, so i got one and as i was walking home i got all excited and what not I already have the xbox 360 elite and i love that piece of machinery and i hear people bagging on it that it gets hot and what not and that it gets the "RROD" or what ever nah the new elites quiet cool and not hot as for the slim!? hmmmm well that this gets hot, very hot, hotter than my elite but plays blurays very very well and yes it does load faster!i also noticed they changed the logo in the start its not as cheesy as the older version, but still pisses me of that it gets hot!

Even if you're a Xbox fanboy, this is great news. Competition is what drives this market and the Slim being the same price as the 360 Elite should make this competiton a bit stronger. Price wars never hurt the consumer.

thelostcause you can remove the hard drive without voiding the warranty in any ps3. I've got a 120gb one in my former 60gb fat ps3.

I got this ps3 and I am quite impressed, with the larger HD, the fact you can remove the 120gb HD without voiding warranty is nice and the updated bluray player offers faster load times, I consider this a great pickup for people that don't already own one.

Im sorry, but I have never, or will never, care what a system looks like. I do not buy it to look at. I buy it to play games. Up until recently, the PS3 has had the worst library of games, foregoing the few PHENOMINAL games like MGS and Uncharted, there has not been enough games to keep me interested in the PS3. Now, finally, they have an aresenal of games coming out; U2, Heavy Rain, GOW3, and GT5. It is sad it took Sony so long to get here, but I guess it is better to come to the party late, than to not come at all.

That vid should have come with a "do not try this at home" disclaimer. : P @joevit It is a bit too early to write off MS and Nintendo just yet. Firstly as you said it is about the games. Gamers who prefer the 360's library will still naturally buy the 360. Secondly the price cuts are not as significant outside of the US and Japan. In the PAL regions (Europe, Australia and New Zealand), the 360 is still cheaper. And thirdly the Wii has a massive lead on both the 360 and the PS3. Overcoming it will be a major hurdle especially when Nintendo eventually introduce a price cut.

As one who owns a 360 not not a PS3. Had a PS3. Hated it, I now cant say that MS is going to get it's @ss handed to them. They need to drop the tag too $250 before its too late. I like the 360 over the PS3, but don't kick me for it. It's just about the games I like. There is no way wii or 360 will hold its own any more and by 2011 the PS3 will meet or have more systems in home.

QUOTE sj_nehama ------------- guys, honestly, find something valid to b*tch about this console. "Oh, but its ugly...dont like it"..well, youre supposed to game it, not make love to it "Meh, it dont have BC. ill pass it"...if it did, it would mean the Emotion Engine (Hardware) had to be present, thus raising costs. I think its troublesome to fully emulate the PS2 via Software on the PS3. (dont gimme the 'there are dozens of emulators out there that do it' because none of them workd on a PowerPC architecture which is the closest thing on earth to PS3 architecture) Besides, why would SONY even put BC? there was a PS3 with that and it didnt even sold enough. If youre so desperate to play PS2 games, what about buying it? --- ...If it had all those things you b*tch about i bet you guys would complain because it dont make coffee --- LOL!! ^ WIN! And Sony win for making this move, it's crazy the amount of people that want to buy a PS3 now. A Blu-Ray aint worth it for the price, A 360 isn't either, but a PS3 Slim.. EPIC WIN! Well done Sony, I was actually planning on gettin the 80 gig here in the UK and you have just made my deal that bit better! I would also like to point out the new look is to attract parents and families and business people as it's got that 'smart, laptop look' which means it's not just a console, but an entertainment system! Now you got thousands of guys out there that can justify the purchase to their wives! We all win at life! Peace out!

@wildamnesia "Looks sexy but so does a supermodel and they're both expensive. I'll stick with my girl-next-door 360!!" Stupidest thing I've ever heard. This is $299, which is the same price as the new 360 Pro price, with the same 120GB storage. If you bought the 360 Pro before 12 hours ago, you payed MORE for the same storage. And if you didn't buy the Pro and only got the 360 Standard, then you payed $50 less for 60GB less. And if you have the Arcade? Then you're just an idiot. See? Sony is selling 120GB at $299. Before today, Microsoft was charging more than Sony for the same storage and lesser graphics. You're definitely paying attention. (And for the record, I'm no fanboy. I don't even have a PS3.)

It is news and hype like this that truly come back to bite. After everything is said and done if the PS3 does not outsell the 360 in next month's numbers then once again Sony will have to deal with the backlash of misrepresentation.

I find it odd that people consider scaricity among a new version of a system news at all. I've been gaming since Atari's heydays, and I can't recall a single system launching with enough stock for everyone to get their fill in the first wave. A little patience would go a long way.

@sobleck Tbh I think he has called out what sounds like a true Sony marketing campaign. I mean lets face it, Sony have not been on top of their game lately and I could see them thinking that millions of people are camped outside a store foaming at the mouth for the cheaper PS3. Sadly like you said, they will just find a really cheap 360 Elite instead.

For those thinking that the Slim is a pointless move, it isn't meant to be an ENTIRELY new console, it's meant to be an update, like the PSP Slim and PS2 Slim. That's why the Slim is gradually replacing the older model (and at a reduced price, no less). The only reason these things get more sales is because they're the newer version, and there are a lot of people out there who buy something with a "NEW!!" sticker on it. The PS3 Slim is different though because it comes at a reduced price, meaning that people waiting out because it was too expensive will be more inticed to get one. See how that works? If you have a bigger one, well hey, good for you. But the Slim isn't supposed to make you go out and buy it to replace your big one in an instant, that was never implied.

The gamestop employee needs to go to a business class, if he thinks sony would want to keep demand high by not providing the console, anyone with a little bit fo business sense knows taht if there is high demand an little supply a chunk of the demanders goes off and buys a similar product so there is a loss of potential customers. Poeple would just scoop up the elite with its price cut

I actually had a 60 gig PS3, but I traded it in to get the new slim. The thing was getting loud and very hot, and I only had 2 PS2 games anyway. The new one is smaller, quieter, but it does lack BC. I think I can deal with that for a while though. Maybe I'll just get a PS2 sometime later.

Oh and coola426, Take over in sales..?. well it better be alot bloody cheaper than that if its going to out sell the 360, Wii, and the DS and "Take over in sales". Feel free to give me as many thumbs down as you like.

I think with all the technology advances they have made since the release of the 1st gen PS3, they should have reinstated the backwards compatibility and also added the 2 extra USB ports. Besides it being 1/3 the volume of the PS3 "fat", I don't see any advantage to getting a PS3 slim if I already own a 160 gig PS3 "fat".
