PS3, 360 turn up at CEATEC

The CEATEC (Combined Exhibition of Advanced Technologies) conference, which is being held October 3 to 7, at the Makuhari Messe in Tokyo, would appear to have little to do with gaming on first glance. It is, after all, devoted mainly to semiconductors and communications devices.

However, Japanese technology site ITmedia found that CEATEC may have more in common with the Tokyo Game Show than just the venue.

According to ITmedia, both the Sony PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Xbox 360 were on display. However, there were no games to be found anywhere near the machines. They were strictly there to show off next-generation video formats, not next-generation games. The PS3s were set up as Blu-ray players, while the Xbox 360s sported HD-DVD add-ons, each playing various video selections in high definition.

Besides the consoles, a number of semiconductor manufacturers were showing off components they make for game machines. These included everything from the Nintendo DS rumble pack to the wireless LAN module used by the Sony PSP.
