Prince Of Persia Creator Trying To Revive Franchise

Maybe we'll see a new game in the near future.

Although it was once a well-known and popular series, Prince of Persia went a little quiet during the PS3/Xbox 360 generation. A film based on the series and the most recent mainline game both launched in 2010, and since then, it's pretty much disappeared. But there may still be hope that the series could return: creator Jordan Mechner recently stated that he's working to resurrect Prince of Persia.

This week, model and TV host Chrissy Teigen posted on Twitter about how she had enjoyed Prince of Persia and wondered if the franchise was still alive. Mechner saw this post and responded, explaining that he and others are trying to garner interest in bringing it back. "Chrissy, I know a few other people who feel the same way," he said. "We're doing our best to make it happen!"

Now Playing: Prince of Persia: The Shadow and the Flame - Announcment Trailer

Mechner developed the very first Prince of Persia game, which originally launched in 1989. Since then, he's helped with several other Prince of Persia games, including the first reboot in 2001 after Ubisoft took over publishing rights.

It is unclear if Ubisoft would consider publishing another Prince of Persia game. Assassin's Creed is often viewed as Ubisoft's successor franchise to Prince of Persia, considering their gameplay and setting similarities. With Assassin's Creed still going strong, Ubisoft may opt to focus on one third-person, historical action series. In the meantime, if you want to check out one of the previous games, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is backwards compatible on Xbox One.

Well I really honestly think the best storyline and environment was of pop 2008 one , pop ww combats were excellent so mainly from these 2 games next prince of Persia should take inspiration . And whatever we just want a pop game now . I'm tired of ac from unity

@devilpiyush: Ugh. I mean Pop 2008 was a fine game but it was not a very gog PoP at all. Visuals didn't fit a franchise known for cutting edge (1, 2, Sands of Time and Warrior Within were all considered graphical masterpieces at the time). Difficult platforming was completely MIA. It's a classic case of 08 being a fine game but not a fine entry into it's franchise.

@usmovers_02: brother I know why you have that feeling against pop 2008 because of its undying factor and bad combat style but I'm really taking about the storyline ,it was best in all if they continue with it with warrior within combats the pop will be the biggest hit in gaming world!!!!!

If Ubisoft were to bring it back now, they'd turn it into a boring open world game.

@dirthurts: I LOVED that game! It had 2 things working against it: 1) PoP 2008 kinda killed the franchise name and 2) The movie was baaaaaaaad

@dirthurts: You can freeze time in forgotten sands, it was pretty neat, lol The platforming remained good, but everything else was uninspired. A good game tho, but not on the same level of the Sands trilogy. The wii had a different version with motion controls and shit, even to this day I'm curious about it.

I think doing a Sands of Time, Two Thornes, Warrior Withen trilogy, to test the waters to see if the interest is there.

Making a new mainline series game is expensive and risky. These 3 games are still pretty good to this day and don't need much to bring up to modern standards (Just a graphical overhaul and some camera tweaks.).

I don't like the whole remaster after remaster stuff we get, but these 3 games deserve one I think. They helped shape a lot of modern platformers, and it'll be great to experience them again without cracking out the old game cube.

Prince of Persia would probably need to do something real new and different if it wanted to make a comeback in a post Assassin's Creed world.

@usmovers_02: I don't think a linear platformer would be a AAA, $60 proposition these days. I'm sure a Sands of Time remake would do fine as something like a $40 nostalgia grab, but for PoP to come back as a major name again? I think they need to have a game that competes in scope and complexity with the other big AAA franchises.

Honestly I'd rather they make a spiritual successor. The series had it's time, let it go and make something new rather than trying to bring it back.

@phoenix1289: Ubi is trying to create new AAA products, but they are hitting a wall almost every time. Maybe to bring back a old franchise is the right approach. Just like they are doing with Beyond good & evil and etc..

I'm all in for Prince of Persia returning and if it's possible, can you please make it like The Sands of Time & Warrior Within right between and I'll gladly pre-order it in a heartbeat :)

Also, while were at it, we need Splinter Cell coming back as well.

I don't think it's possible to mention the name Prince of Persia without quickly following it up with the words Sands of time. That game is considered by many to be the pinnacle of the franchise and truth be told I think ever since it dropped developers have been trying to reach the heights and success achieved by it.

I'm not sure if Ubisoft will ever be able to have lightning strike twice but if they somehow manage to recreate that winning formula it could really propel the series forward and give it the jolt the franchise needs.

Sands of Time would be fantastic, or even a textured refresh/re-release as an icebreaker.

Sands of time, right along with Mario Galaxy, is the greatest 3d platform game ever made. The level design is unreal, really excellent. Saying that, Ubisoft preys on their own franchises. The genius gameplay and level design got exhausted in just one generation. Some friends argued with me that if SoT is really the goat, the gameplay would never be exhausted... Well, that shows how this industry can sometimes be clumsy and too aggressive for their own good. If we had a Mario galaxy sequel every year, we know what would happened. SoT has a special place in my heart, I am satisfied with my experiences with PoP. Honestly, seeing the current Ubisoft, I don't really wish a comeback. And the same could be said about Splinter Cell.

@gleencross:

I'm not huge Ubisoft fan either, but given Valiant Hearts and Child of Light, I know they have the talent.

They would just need to get out of their own way and not fvck up the PoP working formula.

@beantownsean: These 2 games are almost indie in their nature, made by Ubi Art or something, a very small, but intern, studio. PoP is a super production, no way Ubi Art will take over. And after the 2008 reboot with all the "artistic" visuals and shit, idk if PoP really works in this kind of environment. Sands of Time is great because of the epic factor and etc.. Remove the grandiosity, the series loses a little bit of it's charm imo
