Possible Xbox One Hardware Upgrade in the Pipeline, Says Phil Spencer

"You'll actually see us come out with new hardware capability during a generation."

Microsoft has said it is building towards a future where its games consoles will be upgradable, allowing the company to keep hardware viable by incrementally increasing its power instead of replacing it with an entirely new device.

Speaking at a recent media event, as reported by Polygon, Xbox boss Phil Spencer said he believes that Windows 10 could be used as a ubiquitous operating system that unifies all its devices, while the various hardware it runs on evolves, similar to the way PC are upgraded.

"We see on other platforms, whether it be mobile or PC, that you get continuous innovation that you rarely see on console,' he said. "Consoles lock the hardware and the software platform together at the beginning of the generation. Then you ride the generation out for seven or so years, while other ecosystem are getting better, faster, and stronger. And then you wait for the next big step function."

He continued: "When you look at the console space, I believe we will see more hardware innovation in the console space than we've ever seen. You'll actually see us come out with new hardware capability during a generation allowing the same games to run backward and forward compatible."

Since Microsoft has "a Universal Windows Application running on top of the Universal Windows Platform," it will be able to improve hardware "without invalidating the games that run on that platform."

It is not clear whether this means second-gen Xbox One games can run on first-gen hardware.

He continued: "We can effectively feel a little bit more like we see on PC, where I can still go back and run my old Doom and Quake games that I used to play years ago but I can still see the best 4K games come out and my library is always with me.

"Hardware innovation continues while the software innovation is able to take advantage and I don't have to jump a generation and lose everything that I played on before."

You'll actually see us come out with new hardware capability during a generation

Phil Spencer

Asked to elaborate later, Spencer noted that Sony is doing something similar to this in the way it is adding VR capabilities to the PS4. When PlayStation VR launches, it will include a standalone device with its own processor to handle computation for the device.

"Sony is doing this with VR and adding VR capabilities mid-cycle to the PlayStation 4 and they are doing that by adding another box. I don't mean that as a negative. But it's not changing what the core console is about.

"For consoles in general it's more important now than it's ever been, because you have so many of these other platforms that are around. It used to be that when you bought your console you were way ahead of the price performance curve by so much, relative to a PC. But now PCs are inexpensive and your phones are getting more and more capable."

Despite all this, Spencer did not provide any concrete details on whether Microsoft plans to upgrade the Xbox One, or introduce a whole new platform in the future that can be iterated on in the way described above.

"I'm not going to announce our road map for hardware," he said. "I want to make sure that people see that what we are doing enables us to be more committed to what consoles are about than we've ever been and innovate more consistently than we ever have. That's the key for me."

So are they thinking something similar to iPhone models, where older models might be able to run a game but not as well as a newer version?

Actually, I think the model of buying new hardware every few years or so is an outdated concept that is the product of the last 20 years. As we have seen, tech has a funny habit of changing radically in response to new social habits. If nothing else, tech has also proven it can, and eventually will, provide something to replace the old. I don't think the idea of just replacing hardware parts every now and again will be around for much longer. If anything, the idea of just buying a stronger console jives much better with modern spending habits: people would rather by a newer, better phone every couple of years than change its parts.

This potential is round the corner too perhaps. Look at what Intel and Micron are doing with 3D x point. Or AMD and ARM technology.

Maybe this or other new tech could change evening again.

They only admit to PC having the superior upgrade system once Apple and Google are at their heels performance-wise with their mobile devices and upgrading every year. The old console system won't work with no upgrades for 7 years, by the 7th year, even a phone will play more visually capable games at this rate. And devs will move on, disaster coming for MS & Sony by 2020 if they stick to the old system.

@Ultramarinus: Now, hold on. Even desktop PC's hit a wall at the 3 gig processor mark that held for 10 years or so. By your logic, phones would eventually surpass those too. There's only so much you can do with technology in such a confined space. Phones will get faster, but they, too, will eventually hit their wall.

@Barighm there is ALOT more involved in the CPU than clock speed my friend. ALOT more...

@Barighm: Yeah, processor clock speed is only one small part of its performance. The performance difference between say an old Intel Core2Quad 9650 (3Ghz) and an Intel Core i5 4590S (3Ghz) is quite large even though they both run at the same clock speed and are both quad core CPU's.

But since gaming is more about GPU than CPU, your comparison to desktop CPU's is even less relevant. The ARM SoC's in current Apple devices (which contains both CPU and GPU) keep nearly doubling in GPU performance every year. The new Apple mobile SoC that comes out towards the end of 2017 will literally have equivalent performance to an X1's GPU on paper.

@Barighm: There's a vast difference between 3gig of 10 years ago and today's, performance isn't just related to that. Or else, we could still use stuff from 10 years ago.

And as I said here in another comment, all it takes for Apple or Google is to announce a TV set that plays games with controllers, something like Vita TV meets Apple TV. It could destroy MS & Sony in a couple of years unless they can roll out a new console, but then they wouldn't be able to match the performance as that device would be upgraded yearly unlike theirs.

@xwinson: I dont think that will happen and I think Phil was referring to cloud computing on Xbox one. With this tech they could upgrade Xbox ones into a PC like system giving you 4k visuals in games. It was showed in Crackdown 3 how good this tech is during a stage demo last year

Good, It's about time consoles get moved to being a service and not this new bit of hardware you start over with every 6 years.

I'd buy a new console upgrade every 2 years, I buy a new TV every few years, a new phone every year, a new iMac every 3/4 years and a new car every 3 years. Why should consoles be every 6 years? It makes no sense if they want to stay relevant to other hardware that is advancing so fast.

@Slannmage: 'Cause of the software Einstein. Your new TV still shows the same programming, your new Phone still makes the same calls. Your NEW Console plays different games.

A console is the same as a Bluray Player or DVD player or VHS player, it is designed to UNIFY one single Medium for delivering software content for one generation.

Would you go out and buy a brand new Bluray player every 2 years just so you can watch the newest Bluray Movie? NO. How would you like it if I told you that the new Thor BluRay will ONLY run on a new Thor exclusive Bluray player? You'd flip out.

Don't compare general electronics that perform general tasks such as a TV or a Phone with specialty electronics designed to deliver one specific piece of content, in this case games.

If I told you that you needed a new Bluray player every year for the latest movies, and it costs 400 would you still buy Bluray movies?

How about a new Ipod for every single Taylor Swift album, cause her music just won't play on your old devices.

@kazeswen: If the consoles stay where they are now, the consoles die, the Pad Pro 2 will be more powerful come the end of the year, heck the CPU of the current one has more power. The PC was more powerful already at launch, my 670 from 2012 and CPU form 2010 out performed them which is sad.

Tech is moving fast, the consoles are being left behind.

@Slannmage: Console gaming has never been about chasing the latest tech craze. SNES, Genesis, PlayStation 1, and PlayStation 2, even PS3, were all left behind the curve at some point in the life cycle.

It's always been about having one unchanging platform for devs to create games on. At the end of SNES's life cycle, it was so old and outdated it wasn't even funny.

If chasing the newest tech is your thing, really PC is where its at. I also like new things which is why I also game on PC at times.

Really every single console ever made was left behind mid to late life cycle, but it didn't matter.

"Consoles lock the hardware and the software platform together at the beginning of the generation. Then you ride the generation out "

Errrr Phil, isn't that the USP of consoles?

Otherwise it's just becoming a PC or an Xbox Machine!

The reason I stopped using PC'S was partly the cost of keeping up and secondly the ease of pressing a button to turn it and my TV on and a second to load a game that in almost all cases works straight away.

Sure there is less parity this gen compared to a top of the range rig, but console games still look way better than last gen and good value for a console cost.

Plus I don't think a PSVR box is the same, unless they use the power of it on non VR games, but then I think Sony would be done too, and can't see them doing it.

That maybe true today, but I'm not sure the good lady, would want a big old rig in the lounge.

I had to put the HDMI leads in the wall for example. To be fair though, it does make the wall mounted TV look great.

Big Ole Rig?

I just built a mini-ITX Fractal Node 304 for the living room. My wife actually said she likes it because we've been using it to search for vacations on a 47" flat-panel.

I purchased a keyboard with a mouse pad built in, so all the navigation is confined to a small form factor keyboard. Its running a 4th Gen i3 with my old HD7970 GHz Ed, so it'll also handle games.

Its also damn near silent when browsing. My next rig will likely be a Node 202 which is even smaller.

This is part of my problem, 10-15 years ago I would know what you were saying, now you may as well be taking Catalan to me. I kind of understand, but I got lost in some parts.

All I heard was an all in one mouse and keyboard.

I'm not knocking PC owning or saying is better or worse than a console, it's just not for me anymore.

I've an i7 laptop, but doubt the graphics card would handle much.

ITX is just a smaller motherboard form-factor...smaller than ATX. Fractal is just a case manufacture, Node 304 is a model.

I've been building rigs since 1999, I definitely had to play catch-up a number of times.

Cheers, I'm just getting too old to keep up ;-).

I just love games and not stuck to anything in particular, just at a reasonable price.

Its harder to justify splashing out on something mostly only I use, than the rest of the family.

My first PC was a 286 (without turbo button) and ran windows 3.0.

I moved to 3.1 for MS works.

I went to a 3 or 486 with turbo button for the revolutionary Windows 95. Lol

My desire to continue to upgrade slowed with expensive memory and graphics cards during the XP.

Then Vista broke my soul and I gave up when nothing USB would work with it.

@barcaazul: I too got a Sega CD back then. Tell you the truth it was a great experience. Because it the first time where voice acting and full motion video were part of a video game.

I remember playing all the FMV games on the system, Sewer Shark, Nigh Trap, etc, etc. I still remember those FMV games to this day.

Its always cool to be in the grounds up on a new evolution in gaming. To this day I still love cinematic QTE movie style games, possibly from my fond experience from the Sega CD days.

In short, I'll pickup the Sony VR, 'cause it'll be a new experience for me.

Yep it was a great bit of kit, but that and the 32X split the Sega market.

I loved it too, but remember very little coming out on it in the end and then I went to college and didn't have funds for it. In the end I sold it and my Megadrive to help pay my first mortgage.

Was sewer shark the FMV flying game, I had that and it was really cool.

Interestingly the Sega CD wasnt on the survey I did yesterday, or at least I couldn't see it on my phone, but it was hard to read some things.

It's handing them a victory, cause a lot of gamers around the world don't wanna upgrade sht, they just wanna get a system and play some games. That's like pretty much all of China right there. Dude, some places in China still be playing CS on old ass Celeron Systems. That's one country that don't care about upgrading anything.

Hardware isnt the only reason I chose Ps4 over Xbox. Microsoft has issues on a consumer handling level with the Xbox brand. Piss poor customer service, paywalls, generally bad hardware quality, invasive Xbox live dashboard, and countless other issues I can run off for ya. And again Microsoft just chooses to put a bandaid on an infection. The first step to me seriously considering Microsoft again is to see that they get it and they STILL dont get it.

If an Xbox One 1.0 came out next week I'd have no problem trading in my PS4 and buying a 1.0. I love Xbox.

I have Xb1, PS4 and a 4k gaming rig and I still love my Xb1 the best, NOT all AAA games work great on pc and thats even with the nvidia optimizer. Then you have Steam with all these dinkie 2hr games that usually suck. I like PC gaming but without AAA console titles, PC would be in the shitter. Sure sometimes it gets games earlier like Warhammer Vermatide (its ok) but go ahead Phil, give me a xbox one that shits all over my ps4. This gen I could honestly care less about PlayStation.

Smh it's like some of you have tunnel vision the cellphone industry has been doing this for years games come out for iOS they don't say iPhone 5 or 6 if your device is running the latest version of iOS it just works look how much stronger the hardware on iPhone 6 is compared to iPhone 4s and yet games and apps are compatible.
