PlayStation VR is Sony's Official Name For Project Morpheus

PS4's virtual reality headset gets a new name, but still not a release date.

Sony has finally branded Project Morpheus, its upcoming virtual reality headset for PlayStation 4, as PlayStation VR.

The new name for the hardware was revealed by Atsushi Morita, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Japan, at Sony's Tokyo Game Show 2015 press conference. Morisha added that Sony hopes to make the upcoming VR device a "sensation."

"The name ‘PlayStation VR’ not only directly expresses an entirely new experience from PlayStation that allows players to feel as if they are physically inside the virtual world of a game," Sony said in a statement released following the event.

"[The name] also reflects our hopes that we want our users to feel a sense of familiarity as they enjoy this amazing experience."

It continued: "We will continue to refine the hardware from various aspects, while working alongside 3rd party developers and publishers and SCE Worldwide Studios, in order to bring content that deliver exciting experiences only made possible with VR."

Sony still has not confirmed when PlayStation VR will be available. In June 2015, Shuhei Yoshida, Sony's head of worldwide studios, explained key details regarding the device's launch plans remain undecided.

Despite this, he added the PlayStation VR project was "going very, very well."

"We have 20 games that are playable at E3. We had to turn down more submissions from both third-parties and first-parties to prioritise what we wanted to show."

He continued: "The hardware is on schedule. Lots of games are being created. Some we are showing will hit the launch date that we haven't decided as of yet. So it's going really well."

Sony previously said a consumer PlayStation VR model will launch in the first half of 2016, though nothing more specific has been mentioned since.

In regards to the price, Yoshida previously said Sony's aim was to go "as low as possibly can be done."

"We are not talking about any specific number, but this is a console business. We try to provide the hardware at the lowest possible cost so that more people can come in. And so that developers can make games on to create the market. So we'll have the same approach."

Of course coming up with the name option doesn't take long but getting it finalized is a huge pain. When the name last several generations, remember how some people still bring up old hardware occasionally, anyone with some say in the naming process usually wants a say. It is sometimes much more difficult to agree to a name than to do something successful with the product.

Meh, personally more excited for Holo Lense honestly. But in a wishful world I'd love for a SAO kind of deal, minus being trapped and playing for my life.

As someone who have been playing video games since the Atari 2600 and owned every system and hand held to date and currently own a PS4, X1, and Wii U as well as a $4,500 PC I have played and seen it all and have become the biggest skeptic in 3D and virtual gaming.

I'm not saying this to brag, only to make a point that as a 41 year old man who has always hungered for a true virtual entertainment experience and tried every 3D iterations such as the Virtual boy, 3D Stereoscopic glasses, 3D movies, 3D Imax, etc. you name it I tried it all in search of that total out of this world immersion. I came away unimpressed by a great margin.

Until...I bought a Samsung Gear VR. I already have a galaxy S6 Edge phone and Best Buy happened to have a Gear VR in stock at my nearby store which was made specifically for an S6 and S6 edge phone so I decided get one and try it out. I've heard about this before as well as the Oculus Rift, Project Morpheus, and Halo Lens, but as I a said before I've become very skeptic from my pass experiences with bad gimmicks and was not at all hyped about any of this VR.

Now after having owning one and trying it I have to say this is the real deal. Man I have never thought I'd see anything thing like it in my lifetime. The Gear VR, like the Oculus Rift, is just a dev kit/prototype kit, but I am already blown away by what I've seen. 2016 is going to be huge when the consumer versions of Playstation VR and the others (I forgot to mention Valve has a version which is coming this year) is released.

I am currently in the Air Force and decided to bring my Gear VR to work and show it off. Let me tell you, not a single person was left disappointed. There were people in the room saying how silly you look in these things and laughed until I let them try it. They were simply amazed and had a massive smile on their faces when playing with it. Some of them even asked and wrote down information on how to get a hand on one and another said he was going to run out and buy one right after work.

Sorry for the long post and any bad grammar and miss spelling. I'm typing in a hurry and didn't proof read. I just wanted to let you all know the future of VR is legit and something you should look forward. And for those that are big skeptics like me that think it's just another gimmick that will fail I'm telling you get hyped, get ready, and get excited. The future of VR is coming and it's amazing!

Yeah 20 games at E3, but most of them were basically tech demos like the Vita had at launch. So I'm still waiting it out. Don't want to spend 200-300 dollars on this only to find out those "20 games" is all I get before it turns into an indie machine.......

The PS4 can barely hit 60fps for one screen. How will it do it for two?

@bluebird08: He has a valid comment. The creators of the Rift have been working very close with Nvidia to cut down latency. It take's the current gen GPU (Maxwell) to do the job of which the PS4 does not have...not even close. It has to be realtime response otherwise your brain calls BS on the whole thing and often times makes people sick after a while.

@jdawg: there are plenty of 60fps titles out there.

Battlefield 4

Call of duty advanced warfare

Shadow warrior

Wolfenstein the new order

Project cars

Rocket league

metal gear solid 5 ground zeros/phantom pain

Sniper elite 3

There are more but I'm going through the whole list.

Even though they are similar now (architecture wise) designing a game for a console is different than PC. Almost everyone has different specs in there system. But with a console, devs get one specific set of hardware, and are able to get the most out of it.

All in all I could careless about VR. But I'm still interested too see what come out on playstation VR.

I'm expecting a mid to late 2016 release date. Hardware seems pretty much done so they'll just be finalising the design ready for mass production. The games seem close to being finished as well but I imagine they'll want as much time as possible to make everything completely bug free. They'll know that if there's any problems at all with the launch then it'll put the whole project in jeporady. So yeah, my guess is that they're pretty much ready to release it, but just want to plan it in miticulous detail, and leave a wide enough margin of error to guarantee a smooth launch.

Personally I can't wait to try VR for myself. If they bundle it with no mans sky then that'll be a day one purchase for sure!

Well, it's simple and extremely obvious, but it does exactly what it says on the tin and it's certainly not a bad name.

Although I am not really interested, I like Sony's straightforward naming and also the fact that they can count.

@theswooshnl: $200 is pushing it but at $300 Sony stands a great chance at failure. Selling peripherals for consoles is always a hard thing to do.
