PlayStation Removes All Advertising From Facebook And Instagram

In support of the #StopHateForProfit movement, Sony has decided to suspend advertising for July.

Following numerous other companies, including Starbucks, Ford, and Coca-Cola, Sony is pulling all PlayStation advertising from Facebook and Instagram until at least the end of July.

The move will see the removal of all advertising on the social media platforms, both paid and unpaid. Facebook has come under fire recently for continuing to allow hateful content and misinformation to exist on its platform unchallenged, while other platforms have acted against such content. Twitter has started being more aggressive with flagging problematic tweets, especially from politicians, while Twitch has suspended numerous channels and streamers, including Dr. Disrespect and Donald Trump.

In a statement (provided to GamesIndustry.biz), Sony makes it clear that they support the growing #StopHateForProfit campaign. "In support of the #StopHateForProfit campaign, we have globally suspended our Facebook and Instagram activity, including advertising and non-paid content, until the end of July. We stand for working (and playing) together for good."

Xbox owners Microsoft has also decided to remove all advertising from both Facebook and Instagram--a move which is counter to the recent announcement of a partnership with Facebook Gaming after Microsoft decided to close its own streaming platform, Mixer. Microsoft has clarified that the move doesn't mean Facebook advertising will appear on the Xbox Dashboard.

If Facebook, and especially Twitter, want to stop assholes from being assholes and showing their assholes on the internet....delete the service entirely. You can't be an asshole to other people on the internet if you have no avenue to do so.

/tapsforehead

But seriously, sites like Facebook and Twitter realistically trying to police what is and isn't "hateful content" or "misinformation" is like trying to keep a boat with a hole in it from sinking.

The big problem with Facebook is they want to have it both ways. They want to act like a publisher when it suits them, and when it doesn't, they act like a carrier. Carriers claim no responsibility for the content that passes through them. Publishers do.

So when content that comes along might threaten their bottom line, they act like a publisher and remove it. But if they believe it won't affect their profits, they act like a carrier and say they're not responsible for what's on their platform.

Either you ARE, or you AREN'T.

This website, and many others, are making up for that lack of advertising by advertising the companies here. It's a pretty genius move on their parts, and then they can just continue advertising on Facebook once Facebook issues some kind of response about taking a stand.

...aaaand all these companies conveniently save millions in advertising spend while publicly stating it's because of some popular cause or another.

(Keep telling yourselves it's just because these companies are so publicly consciensious...)

@Elranzer: I expect some backlash on that decision. Let's see.

Well, they're clearly trying to stay a platform instead of a publisher. If they start moderating everything they'll be subject to libel suits. Social media has had it both ways since their inception, but now they're going to have to choose.

is Facebook supposed to employ people to read, fact check, and moderate everything posted to FB?

@lostn: As far as hate speech, I should think they could create algorithms to look for very specific words or phrases, and flag them for review. They could also search for specific origins of accounts, (but that is something that should happen automatically on the front end).

Reviewing all content for accuracy/misinformation would be impossible.

If you mean things that are reported as offensive or illegal...yes. Why wouldn't they?

@n0matter: i dont think this is any solution. people will just find even more selfcontained place to spout stuff in their bubble. that is even more scary when altists are hiding somewhere

in theory (like communism) fb is an excellent place where all sides can speak their sides and have conversation with others to commune and learn and live more easy together

ofc things started more like that but now its just private groups and extreme shouting at other side

@n0matter: Actually, it doesn't take a lot of people -- it takes a small handful of ML programmers, and a small support team.

...and the willpower of mgmt.

@n0matter: can you give an example of something that's illegal to say?

Also, this is impractical. Unless you use word filters, which they probably already do, in order to delete everything that is offensive or illegal, they would need to comb over every comment ever posted including the ones that aren't illegal or offensive. No one has the money to hire enough people to do that.

@lostn: I know i am not the one you replied to but for me something like"it is all made up that nazis killed yews, other minorities and political enemies" should be classified as illegal.
Doesnt matter how easy it is to prove it wrong

@lostn: Considering it's a private platform and not government controlled, anything is fair game. Private platforms are not subject to the first amendment. Short, easy list of things that could be considered illegal on the platform: Hate speech, threats, harassment, abuse, condoning acts of violence, etc. You want to shout them in public that's your problem but infringing on the right's of others isn't legal.

The filters are not impractical as you claim, computers are very efficient. How do you think marketing works, huge amounts of data are compiled and crunch for the sake of profit. The same could be done for flagging posts.

Sure they need to pay people but have you seen how much this tech giants churn out in profit? Facebook profits in the billions. If people feel their post was taken down in error, they should be able to appeal it.

The issue is these companies would rather profit, regardless of the content.

@darkelf83: don't trust algorythms to make that job all the time. Users always find out a way to get around it. Oportunism, malice and hatred can also inspire such ideas.
