If Facebook, and especially Twitter, want to stop assholes from being assholes and showing their assholes on the internet....delete the service entirely. You can't be an asshole to other people on the internet if you have no avenue to do so.

But seriously, sites like Facebook and Twitter realistically trying to police what is and isn't "hateful content" or "misinformation" is like trying to keep a boat with a hole in it from sinking.

The big problem with Facebook is they want to have it both ways. They want to act like a publisher when it suits them, and when it doesn't, they act like a carrier. Carriers claim no responsibility for the content that passes through them. Publishers do.

So when content that comes along might threaten their bottom line, they act like a publisher and remove it. But if they believe it won't affect their profits, they act like a carrier and say they're not responsible for what's on their platform.

Either you ARE, or you AREN'T.

This website, and many others, are making up for that lack of advertising by advertising the companies here. It's a pretty genius move on their parts, and then they can just continue advertising on Facebook once Facebook issues some kind of response about taking a stand.

...aaaand all these companies conveniently save millions in advertising spend while publicly stating it's because of some popular cause or another.

Well, they're clearly trying to stay a platform instead of a publisher. If they start moderating everything they'll be subject to libel suits. Social media has had it both ways since their inception, but now they're going to have to choose.
