PlayStation Now Public Beta Starts Today on PS4 With 100+ Games; Check Out This Walkthrough Video

Game streaming service now available to anyone on PlayStation 4 in the United States and Canada.

Sony's much-anticipated game streaming service, PlayStation Now, is now available through a public beta in the United States and Canada for the PlayStation 4. The service has been in closed beta since January, and will come to other platforms and regions sometime in the future.

To help get you up to speed on everything the PlayStation Now beta has to offer, Sony released a walkthrough video featuring commentary from Jack Buser, who is senior director for the service. More than 100 games are available through PlayStation Now currently, and you can rent them for a variety of durations (as short as four hours) and for a range of prices (as low as $1.99).

If you rent a game and then want to purchase the full product later on, your progress will be saved through Sony's cloud servers, allowing you to pick up where you left off.

The first thing you'll want to do when you fire up the PlayStation Now beta (available in the PlayStation Store on PS4) is access the "Connection Test." This will determine if your broadband connection is beefy enough to run PlayStation Now and get good results. Sony recommends at least a 5Mbps connection for an optimal experience on PlayStation Now.

PlayStation Now supports both wired and wireless connection types, but Buser says a wired connection is preferable because it is often more stable than wireless.

In addition, Buser stressed that the PlayStation Now beta you see today is just that, a beta. It's "early days," he says, adding that it is important that users share feedback with Sony so they can make the product better in the long run. "We're going to be listening closely to what the gamers tell us, and [PlayStation Now] will evolve over time."

Though you will only find a la carte rental options on PlayStation Now today, Buser reiterated that Sony is planning to offer a Netflix-style subscription plan sometime in the future. "It's definitely something [that's] in the works. So stay tuned for that," he said.

For more on PlayStation Now, check out GameSpot's in-depth interview with Sony about the streaming service.

I was actually looking forward to this and now I am completely disappointed. I am sure many thought this would be a great catalog to stream through for nominal fee. Not a timed purchase(rental). Would have been a great answer to backwards compatibility, but it just looks like a way to pay for the gaikai purchase.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I have a PS4 and I saw the prices they were offering for a rental. THEY SUCK. I thought when they acquired Gaikia they would make streaming BC games available to PS+ subscribers free and a fee for non subscribers. Even if they charged a nominal fee it would be better than a timed rental

@Dcyple3000 @mi_hung_lo This is NOT a game. There's a difference between an alpha and a beta. This not a game. They will see how this works out by doing a stress test with the servers and traffic. It has nothing to do with the pricing. This is the business model they agreed upon....period. There's no committee checking the prices. They unloaded it to the world and now they are checking it's integrity. They will not change prices when it goes completely live. You wont see a price drop for months

@mi_hung_lo I think it'll be worth it if they go to a subscription-based model. I wouldn't use it personally ( I like to own hard copies), but I can see how it might appeal to some

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I believe this beta is a stress test. I know they "mentioned" looking at a subscription based model in the future, but that would be a 180 from the model they have now. It would no different from MS dropping DRM from the backlash. I think they threw that at the wall to see if it would stick. If they would consider changing that business model, why would they try this current one right now which is clearly the opposite of a subscription model

Another thing is your saves go to a cloud server. Also at$7.99 a month, you can just buy the game for probably cheaper than that off Ebay.

Do you know if you unlock trophies you get or do you have to actually purchase the game to unlock trophies?

PS now can play all generations of game from one system and no download. the new games are gonna be priced a little higher of course cause they require more bandwidth to stream. in all i am very happy with and it can only get better.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> i said last gen consoles. Most PS3 games are multiplats available of the 360. Similar to the PS2, most PS4 gamers will have either a PS3 or an xbox 360 even by the end of the gen. And that's then. For now, PS3 will continue to be manufactured.

And the games can be bought cheaper, specially if used. Most AAA games will require more than 1 week to finish. Anyone who wants to play that many last gen will use a last gen console.

This is why i said Sony should just use i'ts own PS3 exclusives instead of trying to stick every game in there.

This hobbie isnt cheap personally I can usually tell if a game is a gem or just coal in three hours or less so I can see myself using this service only if they constantly feed it new titles most old titles I've already played.

On a side note those speedrunners could have a ball with this I can only imagine the youtube vids now lol!

Looking forward to trying this and all, but that's a cheesy and gross advertisement in walkthrough form. Having the fake interviewer reminds me of those ads done for political campaigns, where they made it look like a news segment, when it wasn't.

Just be more honest and transparent, you usually are.

<< LINK REMOVED >> good question, I don't know where they are aiming with those 4-hour prices. Of course it will be a better price/hour value when you rent for longer - that's how these things always work. But it's still too steep for a "sneak preview" rental I think.

They need to utterly abolish the 4 hour option or make it free at the very least. Cause as of now, it feels like they're charging for a game demo. Pathetic Sony. Also reduce the price of all the other options.

@breathnac @chronoschris Poor business model. Again, sony is banking on their fan base instead of looking at the big picture. Reasonable monthly fee gets you at least 60% of the console owners signing up for residual income. This model might get you 10% from the purist. Netflix got to where they are by offering an inexpensive price to a large number of people. There's a reason everyone canceled their cable and only stream now
