PlayStation Now Public Beta Starts Today on PS4 With 100+ Games; Check Out This Walkthrough Video

Game streaming service now available to anyone on PlayStation 4 in the United States and Canada.

Sony's much-anticipated game streaming service, PlayStation Now, is now available through a public beta in the United States and Canada for the PlayStation 4. The service has been in closed beta since January, and will come to other platforms and regions sometime in the future.

To help get you up to speed on everything the PlayStation Now beta has to offer, Sony released a walkthrough video featuring commentary from Jack Buser, who is senior director for the service. More than 100 games are available through PlayStation Now currently, and you can rent them for a variety of durations (as short as four hours) and for a range of prices (as low as $1.99).

If you rent a game and then want to purchase the full product later on, your progress will be saved through Sony's cloud servers, allowing you to pick up where you left off.

The first thing you'll want to do when you fire up the PlayStation Now beta (available in the PlayStation Store on PS4) is access the "Connection Test." This will determine if your broadband connection is beefy enough to run PlayStation Now and get good results. Sony recommends at least a 5Mbps connection for an optimal experience on PlayStation Now.

PlayStation Now supports both wired and wireless connection types, but Buser says a wired connection is preferable because it is often more stable than wireless.

In addition, Buser stressed that the PlayStation Now beta you see today is just that, a beta. It's "early days," he says, adding that it is important that users share feedback with Sony so they can make the product better in the long run. "We're going to be listening closely to what the gamers tell us, and [PlayStation Now] will evolve over time."

Though you will only find a la carte rental options on PlayStation Now today, Buser reiterated that Sony is planning to offer a Netflix-style subscription plan sometime in the future. "It's definitely something [that's] in the works. So stay tuned for that," he said.

For more on PlayStation Now, check out GameSpot's in-depth interview with Sony about the streaming service.

PSNow seems mostly targeted at those PS4 owners who never had a PS3. One Sony VP cited a study which found that about 48% of PS4 owners never owned a PS3.

It's targeted for PlayStation TV also, with other devices added some time in the future.

Some of the pricing isn't too bad. There are some games that are only $7.99 or $9.99 to rent for the month. For most, it seems the week pricing is the best deal, though. I've read a lot of negative comments about the 4-hour price of games—but at the same time, comments about how you can't even complete a game in 4 hours. So the 4-hour pricing is probably for extremely casual players.

Sony is listening, no longer $5 for 4 hours, now it's ONLY $2 for 4 hours (for some titles).

Hoping the beta comes to Europe real soon. I'm not a fan of the idea of renting over purchasing, but I'd like to try this out.

really?! 4 hour rental? Why not a one day rental? How about having a renting to own model? You rent the game and you like it then just paid the difference of the buy price. And yes i do agree about having some kind of unlimited subscription would be good too.

I don't know... most games can be completed in 10 - 15 hours or so, which would not turn out to be that bad. Say if fresh PS4 owner wants to check out previous Uncharted games before getting Uncharted 4. Or any other ongoing franchise.

I mean - Darksiders, $5.99 for 7 days. Sure you can finish game in 7 days..?

Eventually - if it sells, the price is right. If it doesn't, Sony will have to adjust pricing.

The debating below (of which I am admittedly a part) is just the vocal minority. Who knows what will really happen and what the final prices and service options will be

this service is still a cool idea, and a convenient option, but as many have said before the prices are completely out of whack. anyone with half a brain will do a little research and see that they can save money by simply buying the game they're interested in renting rather than getting it for 90 days (and in some cases 30 days). if there's no subscription model then this is going to be a catastrophic fail for sony

I'll just keep my PS3 and buy the games I want in a year or so when they're $9.99 new! lol This is an overpriced service.

With those prices and the fact that the console can read discs, i think that the physical media is safe. I don't get why Sony is releasing this open Beta with the same prices that nobody accepted in the first one.

It was literally the first problem that everyone pointed to them. You can buy a physicall copy of practically all of the games on the repertoire for less than the 90 day rental price and keep all the buyer privileges that comes with it.

The only way to make this option attractive enough, is the subscription model as part of the Plus service (with the obvious price increment).

<< LINK REMOVED >> I totally agree with on the prices, they are absurd.

For a person like me PS Now seemed at first very good option, seeing as PS4 is the first Sony console I have owned, and PS Now would have given me an opportunity to play PS3 games etc. However, if they are really going with the price structure present, no way I, or any sane person, will pay what they are asking.

I have thought it would be great (optional) addition to Plus as well, and he does indeed mention that they are looking into Sub-based model as well, so let's hope that comes to something, and the pricing is more of the intelligent variety than currently shown.

One last thing though, I have this weird feeling that we might be looking at the future of gaming here, where you don't actually buy (and own) games yourself, but instead just rent them.

@S4E @The_Cimmerian You may be right about that cloud gaming will be the main way of distribution of games in the near future, but let us not forget what happened to Microsoft and their initial policies with their XBox One.

If enough people stand against unfair treatment, and vote with their wallet, the companies will be forced to adapt or to perish, it's simple offer and demand at the end of the day.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I know what you mean by XB1 and the reversal of their policies, and how they were pretty much forced to change all of that.

However, what if the future scenario is that everyone does the same? Cloud gaming/streaming/whatnot will become the norm that all the big ones Sony, MS and even Nintendo use, what are you going to do if you are a console gamer?

It wouldn't be that much of a thing for me, because I can always game on PC, but strictly console gamers might not have a choice then.

This service completely sucks. I looked at a game and it cost $4.99 FOR 4 HOURS!!! Are you serious??!! The prices are just ridiculous. It should be like $.99 for something like that.

This streaming service started out as a way to play the PS3 games you OWNED on the PS4. All your digitally owned games will be streamed to your PS4. I even got the impression that if you owned the disc version that you could put the PS3 disc in your PS4 and it would let you stream that game so you could play it. More Sony lies.

Now it's a frigin SUPER-overpriced rental service. I own all the Back To The Future games from the PS3. They're all digital games that I purchased on PSN. I went to the Back To The Future game selection and PS Now will charge me the same price as everyone else, even though I own the digital PS3 games. It's not right. It's just not right. I hope the service fails miserably.

para. 1) I agree, the 4-hour price is indefensible. But, the other prices are pretty normal for game rental - as someone below pointed out it's cheaper than redbox for the longer-term rentals (who is going to finish a game in a day anyway? [don't answer that, dude with no job or family or other hobbies]).

para. 2) I don't think anything you said there was ever lied about... I don't remember Sony promising this ever. In the earliest days they mentioned PS Now as a way to play PS3 games on PS4, but I think they were pretty clear from the beginning that this would be a new paid service. All I remember along the lines of what you wrote were rumors and speculations and hopes from gamers. Frankly, this stuff sounds too good to be true (apparently it is).

para. 3) I mean, I know where you are coming from, but you bought a license for ONE copy of the back to the future game for PS3. I'm not SUPPORTING it, but it does make sense that you aren't entitled to a free second license on a different system.

Please don't bite my head off (not saying you were planning to, but you know how people get around here). Just trying to have a discussion

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I have to agree on the old games. Yes you did buy a licence but this is really paying for the service as much as the game. I can never get my head around someone buying one version of something and expecting every other version of it for free. When i went in to buy lord of the rings on blu ray i didn't bring in my old dvd box to wave around as i take it off the shelf and walk out the door without paying.

@RobDev @xantufrog @Vodoo In fairness, the blu ray would be an upgrade. With lag and being tied online....this really isn't.

I see what you're saying, but he's right, this is a case where you have already purchased the same, if not better version of the same exact game. It's going to force many to rebuy, or dust off their ps3. Neither is acceptable in my view.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Maybe it was speculation that I was remembering. But I think being that they're streaming me the EXACT game that I bought, because I bought the PS3 version and that's exactly what they're streaming to me, is greedy and unfair.

I get your point about the license but I'm not being streamed a PS4 version of the game, I'm being streamed the PS3 version. The Version I already own.

Regardless, the way it's setup now serves me no purpose. You can buy most of those games for cheaper. Hopefully they release some sort of subscription service that makes it better.

I have a strange theory...maybe this is really out there. But they stopped talking about PS1&PS2 games and are being really dodgy about it....

I wonder if they will make PS1 and PS2 games all free with the price of the monthly/annual subscription when it comes out.

Think about it, most that are willing to pay the monthly fee are likely hardcore gamers and looking for those older titles. This would ensure a loyal fanbase every month, and also give a ton of value. Because really...how much do you charge for such old games? This seems like a good idea to me.

@drysprocket I was wondering something similar - in my case I was wondering if the rumors about adding on-system emulation are true and that's why they aren't bothering piloting the PS1/2 on PS NOW just yet. But your theory might earn them more money - mine would help sell systems ("yay, it's kind of backwards compatible!") but yours would help sell the service, which probably makes more money in the long-run.

It's kinda annoying that they expect me to pay them without even offering a free hour to try it out first. Is that too much to ask ? I'm also really disappointed that they do't have any of the ps3 exclusives to try out.
