PlayStation Home Officially Closed

2008-2015.

This is no April Fools' Day prank. After six years, Sony's online virtual world--PlayStation Home--is now officially closed. The virtual destination opened in 2008 and ceased operation on March 31.

No Caption Provided

The official shutdown is not a surprise, as Sony announced in September 2014 that the PlayStation 3 service would close on that date in the United States, Canada, and Europe.

PlayStation Home was first revealed at GDC in 2007. Pitched as a free, Second Life-style virtual world where you'd create a virtual version of yourself that could have an apartment, meet up with friends, socialize, and watch movies or play games, Home never met the full potential of what was originally outlined.

Although it attracted millions of users following its launch in 2008, numerous overhauls--including a relaunch in 2011 and the addition of game-themed content--never turned Home into what Sony hoped it would become.

Do you have any particularly noteworthy memories of PlayStation Home? Share them with us, if you'd like, in the comments below!

I realize it's not "cool" to like PlayStation Home, and I've only popped on there a handful of times in the last 4-5 years, but I can admit I had some good fun on there back in 2008-2010. It was probably 'cause I was logged on with real life friends and just goofing around. That said, I've never understand the people who were addicted to Home and spent tons of money there.

Funny how you say "addicted" to playing a social interactive game.

How many hundreds of dollars have dumped into your addictions?

<< LINK REMOVED >> Playing video games is a hobby for me, not an addiction. It doesn't impact my life in a negative way and I don't spend money on games when I shouldn't. I also don't throw tons of money away on virtual clothes. When I say people addicted to Home I'm talking about the people are acting like their real lives are over because Home is shutting down. And yes, those people do exist.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> oh man, funny that you mention that soup-or-man. I meet a girl who said she got married to another girl on home and they never met in real life. They had a wedding and everything on home. I was like shiiiitt for real? poor girl was living her life like it was real on home.

I try not to laugh and say anything bad, I just accept that people can be really weird.

I had a buddy who was serious addicted to this sh!t. He eventually stopped playing real games just so he could focus on home. He actually spent good money on it too. He said it was fun b/c he met a bunch of great people there. Yet he pretty much cat-fished everyone he met b/c he had to pretend he was girl for people to even talk to him. Glad this trash is gone.

<< LINK REMOVED >> You are damn retarded if you delude yourself that it was trash. It was actually in fact one of the most hilarious important masterpieces even known. You could troll for nothing and no mods or admins even bothered to caught you except if you suddenly encountered a autistic all-serious ****** "trying to follow the policy". I had enough of those dumb miserable bitches there.

Anyway you missed a lot. It was fucking funny. I had virtual girls trying to suck on my giant cock and enforce me to sex or smth. Shit, I laughed like hell.

<< LINK REMOVED >>You had groups of people who intentionally broke the system and glitched games, there were groups of people posing as girls that conned lonely men into buying then PSN gift cards, there were even people that just focused on hacking other users' ISPs. We are talking low level hacks and cons, but nonetheless.

Seems to me that all the haters just couldn't find anyone that would talk to them. With the negative attitude you all display I'm guess you were all Trolls.

If you took the time to increase your cashe size you wouldn't of had all of the downloading. FYI you could start parties and launch your game thru HOME. Then again that would mean you actually had to read the directions.

This was such a waste of time. I remember years ago going into Home for the very first time - bought a couch, got a virtual haircut, and then wondered what I was doing with my life. Haven't virtually set foot in there since.

<< LINK REMOVED >> there was that whole second life fad going on at the time. people thought this kind of virtual environment would be a thing. hence all the huge stupid investments from real companies on ads on these things.

Dunno why they didn't just carry it over to the PS4. Might of become something on the PS4 what with PS4 being the best selling console of this gen.

<< LINK REMOVED >> It costs servers to run this stuff man and Sony can't afford extraneous costs right now. So unless its making them a profit, there's no need for it.

Home was a good idea with bad implementation,

long load times, unnecessary use of bandwidth,

few interactive itens, lack of support and lack of some kind of game reward(like a trophy or avatars).

I confess i had high expectations for it back in the release date,

RIP

(and dont come back anymore pls)
