PlayStation Home Officially Closed

2008-2015.

This is no April Fools' Day prank. After six years, Sony's online virtual world--PlayStation Home--is now officially closed. The virtual destination opened in 2008 and ceased operation on March 31.

No Caption Provided

The official shutdown is not a surprise, as Sony announced in September 2014 that the PlayStation 3 service would close on that date in the United States, Canada, and Europe.

PlayStation Home was first revealed at GDC in 2007. Pitched as a free, Second Life-style virtual world where you'd create a virtual version of yourself that could have an apartment, meet up with friends, socialize, and watch movies or play games, Home never met the full potential of what was originally outlined.

Although it attracted millions of users following its launch in 2008, numerous overhauls--including a relaunch in 2011 and the addition of game-themed content--never turned Home into what Sony hoped it would become.

Do you have any particularly noteworthy memories of PlayStation Home? Share them with us, if you'd like, in the comments below!

I tried it a couple times....between having to download a ton.....I mean a ton of data and looooooong load times it never struck a chord with me......

character creation was limited, you had to buy crap just to make your character look even somewhat cool....all I ever saw in the environment was bunches of people just standing around at various spots.....yeah.....the world was dead though so IDK, I can't feel sorry for this closure....or shut down whatever.....

PS Home is one of the many things Sony did wrong with the PS3.

Checked it out once, realized it was terrible, and went back to playing Demon's Souls.

Good riddance. Guess dudes pretending to be chicks so they can creep on what they think are chicks, but are really other dudes, will have to go elsewhere to get their creep on now...

I only used it a couple of times just to see what it was about. Had one of my funniest moments in all of my online gaming though.

Some poor girl apparently stumbled into PS Home. The little boys were on her like white on rice! Lol. They hounded that poor girl for 20 mins before she got fed up and left. It was hysterical.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Some poor girl? You think so? It was quite likely a closet male dealing with some unresolved identity issues. And having 20 loser guys hitting on him was too much, too quick.. He was only ready for one.

I remember this at launch. Downloading took a long time, loading took a while also, and maybe log in a few time before I realize it wasn't really anything. I think I watched a video in one of the theaters and after waiting forever to try to go bowling, I gave up.

Only time I spent any length of time in HOME was when they did those Resistance areas. I think if you beat the sky shooter game you got some special skin for Resistance 2.

It was an interesting idea that was poorly implemented, ran badly, and got virtually no support from SONY after launch. One of their typical "fire and forget" strategies.

Like most Sony things, they had this great idea and expected third parties to carry it.... If Sony would have spent time and money improving the social aspect of it then this thing could have been a virtual Facebook instead of some Second Life wannabe.

It was an interesting idea but it was on the wrong direction. It should have been like facebook or like a Hub world for gaming where you can meet your friends online form parties and then go coop games of your choice. Or have mobile version which acts like facebook but has more customisation.

Let me spin you a little tale.

Before 2010, I did not have a way to connect any devices to the internet, and the only reason I had internet on my PC at all, was thanks to one of those USB mobile dongles. If I ever needed things done online, I had to go to a library, an internet café or a friend's house (which is also where I played most online games).

Then in 2010 when I finally did get fully fledged internet, I was ecstatic. I hooked everything up to it via Wifi... except my Nintendo DS, cos my security type wasn't WEP, and fun fact: The original NDS only supports WEP security. After that, I wondered the most natural thought I've ever had, "Which game should I play online first?" In the end, I decided to play MGS4 online, but after turning my console on and creating my PSN account, I noticed Playstation Home. Always curious as to what it was (couldn't go on it before, since I had no net), I decided to go on it before playing MGS4. That essentially makes PS Home the very first "App" or "Game" (if you want to call it that) I ever went on with my own personal internet. I had a lot of fun on Home, even if it didn't have much content. Running around and exploring this open-ended world with no objective, that was full of other, real people was a new experience to me. Any online games I played beforehand at the café or friend's house, were mostly shooters, and even when they were MMO's, there was always some objective or mission to do, which mean there was never time to stop and just talk to these strangers. I think Home just changed my outlook on calm social platforms in general, so in all honesty, even though I haven't been on it for some time, and sidenote: I did go on it a few dozen times after this first venture, I can't say I'm a little sad to see it go.

Oh, and if you're wondering. MGS4 online was goddamn awesome too.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I don't know, but I doubt it. I was mostly just running around and exploring the place. The most I can remember is that you could play bowling with others. Eh, There weren't a lot of features back when I played it, but one of the main things was that you could make your own "apartment" and fill it with w.e junk you had. I never did, so...

My fondest memory was it taking two days to download, a few minutes to load, then feeling like I wasted all of that time and the around two hours I spent playing it. I felt bad for the females that were hounded and harassed by the pathetic boys thinking they were gonna get a chance with someone for once in their life. I can't say I will miss it.

Oh yeah, I noticed that crap too. Some people seemed very desperate, and couldn't take the hint when others would tell them to go away.

The only real fools on this April Fools Day are the gamers thinking Sony has great online support. This may have closed because of it's age but explain why other of their past games with less than 2 years closed online. Playstation will never compete with PCs online multiplayers service quality. I have played games on PC that was supported over a decade by the company.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I'm pretty sure the real fools are people like you who insist on continuing to feed this completely stupid war between gamers, and feel that everyone must think and game just like they do. I mean how dare they have different preferences. It's almost like people crave choice or something. Some people prefer PS, some Xbox, some Nintendo, and some PC. And then there are others, like myself, who play on multiple gaming platforms. Just be happy people are gaming and stop with the superiority complex.
